IMS teams play coed against Fossil Lady Cards finish season with Cardinals win at Echo

the Cardinals scored two

a lead at halftime o f 8-4 In
the third quarter, the Cards
scored seven points and
Fossil only scored six In the
fourth quarter, the Cardinals
scored four points and Fossil
scored two points, but Fossil
ended up with the win at 16-
15.
Kevin LaRue was

Tanner Rietmann came in
second with four points and
Alex Rietmann, Beth Morter
and S tefanie A rcher all
scored two points each
“ This w as a fun
game Fossil’s numbers were
down this year so we played
two games that were coed
and it worked out real well
I was very impressed with
how the kids played together
and almost pulled off the

In the first quarter of
Cardinals scored 12 points
and Fossil only scored five,

quarter, the Cardinals only
scored four points and Fossil
came alive and scored 12
points, leaving the score at
halftime 17-16, Fossil.
In the third quarter,
the Cards scored 11 points
and Fossil scored eight, the
Cardinals taking the lead
back In the fourth and final
quarter, the Cardinals scored
14 points and Fossil only
scored seven The Cards
came out with the victory,
41-32.
Clay M orter made
14 points, Cory Peterson 10
and Stormy Kendrick nine
Matt Hams made four points
and Brenna Rietmann and
Tiana Camarillo both scored
two points.
“ The kids played
well It is always difficult to
get a feel for the game when
you haven’t played together
before,” said Coach Garrett
“ Lynn Dee Ramos and Dawn
Eynetich are doing a great
job with the girls’ program
and it showed with Brenna

running our plays, learning
our press and playing good
fundamental basketball This
was a good experience for all

last weekend, Feb 11 and
12, defeating Helix on the
road on Friday and getting
by W heeler at home on
Saturday With those wins,
lone's Big Sky record moves
to 14-1, with an overall
record o f 15-8
The Lady C ards
used a big first quarter to get
in front o f the physical Helix
Lady Grizzlies lone jumped
out to a 16-2 lead before
Helix got things together to
pull within seven at the half,
24-17 The scoring stayed
tight after the half with the
Cardinals holding a 38-29
edge at the end o f three and
staying strong for the win,
49-39
Amber Patton led
the team in scoring with 15
points followed by Jenny
Griffith with 10, Sara Peck
with nine, Emily Rietmann
with seven, Kylee Svetich
with five and Ashly Grams
with three Peck had a strong
game with 11 rebounds and
four blocked shots Jenny
Griffith came up big with
eight rebounds and six steals
“We had a great first
quarter and that was the
difference in the game,” said
Coach Ryan Rudolf “ Helix
played a very physical game
and played tough after the
first quarter The girls did a
good job o f regrouping in the
second half to secure the
win ”
On Saturday, lone
hosted Wheeler for their final
home game o f the regular
IMS boys’ “B” team lost to Goslings

In the first quarter,
the Cardinals made no points
and the Goslings scored two

Cards scored two points, but
the Goslings scored eight
and by halftime the score
was 10-2. In the third
quarter, the Cards scored no
points and the G oslings
scored eight In the fourth
quarter, the Cardinals put up
a fight and scored eight
points while the Goslings
scored seven, with a final
score o f 25-10, Goslings

“ T he kids played
their best game o f the year,”
said Coach Mike Garrett “I
•have been very happy with
the progress o f my 6th and
7th graders who have played
on the “B” team and I am
looking forward to coaching
them again next year.”

quarter But Wheeler took

pull ahead, leading 13-11 at
halftime and 18-17 at the end

and eight rebounds, while
Griffith scored six points and
gathered up seven boards

with two and Sara Peck and
Emily Rietmann with one
Coach Ryan Rudolf
said the game was a tough
one to win “We started the
gam e well and finished
strong but we had no energy
during the second and third
quarters Wheeler did a good
job o f slow ing the game
down and that frustrated the
girls,” he said Rudolf also
noted that subbing in some
o f the younger players in the
third q u a rte r seem ed to
boost the team ’s energy.
“Their energy helped spark
the starters in the fourth
quarter where we finally got
the lead and held onto the
win,” he said
The Lady Cardinals
will now focus on the Big
Sky D istrict Tournament
where they are scheduled to
play at 3 p m on Friday at
Umatilla High School
Men’s Breakfast to be held
The Men’s Breakfast
for residents and visitors of
Heppner, lone, Lexington,
Hardman and surrounding
area will be held on Sunday,
Feb 20 from 8-9 a m. at
Christian Life Center and
hosted by the Willow Creek
B aptist m en’s group All
men are invited and
encouraged to bring their
sons and/or daughters.
The purpose o f the
breakfast is to encourage
men to be better husbands,
fath ers and role m odels
within their families and
communities

became evident early on that
they came ready to play

The first quarter was
a low scoring affair with lone
leading ju st 10-7 at its

Cardinals began to warm up,
scoring 14 points in the
second, while the Cougars
struggled to just score five,
leaving the score at halftime,
24-12 lone lengthened its
lead to 37-21 after three
before cruising home for the
victory in the fourth
Nick Christman led
the team in scoring with 13
points followed by Kelly
Thompson with 11 and Dan
quarter Tony Bolin brought
in seven points, Tyler Brown
five, Tyler Raible four and
Alan Rietmann two Brown

with 12 and assists with four
and Thompson tallied five
steals to lead that category

one o f the best defensive
game that I have ever seen
by kids that I’ve coached”
said Coach Dennis Stefani
“Kelly and Nick did a great
job o f keeping the ball out
of their point guard’s hands
while Tyler Brown and Tony
Bolin did a great jo b o f
rebounding.” Stefani also
noted that Long had a fine
fourth quarter, scoring nine
points to put the game out
o f reach. “This was a great
team effort from all,” said
Stefani

On Friday, Tyler
Brown lit up the scoreboard
with a career-high 38 points,
shooting 67 percent from the
floor (16 o f 24) including
two 3-pointers. He led the
Cards to a 26-6 first quarter
ad v an tag e and a 41-29
halftime lead. lone continued
th e ir stro n g play in the
second half, winning the
game 81-61
Along with Brown’s
38 points, Nick Christman
added 12 points, (shooting
45 percent) and four steals,
while Tyler Raible netted 10
points and 11 rebounds
Tony Bolin had eight points
and eight steals, while Kelly
Thompson had 10 assists.

“Tyler Brown had a

career high 38 points,” said

On Saturday, the
Cards had three players in
double figures and got the
66-52 win, but found the
Hermiston Sophomores to
be a team that just wouldn’t
go away. The Cards led 19-
12 after one and 30-17 at the
half. However, Hermiston
kept trying to make a run and
kept the Cards moving until
the final buzzer.
Brown had another
high scoring night, recording
27 points Bolin added 18
and C hristm an had 10
