Mustang JV girls split over weekend Mustang JV boys drop two

Friday, Jan 21, the Heppner
Mustang JV girls traveled to
Stanfield and beat the Tigers
51-30 on Saturday, Jan. 22.
The Mustangs, now 6 and 6
on the year, will be at home
on Friday, Jan 28 against
Umatilla and at Sherman
County on Saturday, Jan. 29.
The
M ustangs
jumped out to a 6-0 lead
against the Tigerscots thanks
to four points from Whitney
Matthews and were tied 8-8
after one. They went cold in
the second and trailed 28-11
at the half They fell further
behind at 40-16 after three
and Cyde Coil had two 3-
pointers in the fourth as the
M ustangs ou tsco red the
T igerscots 14-12, but it
wasn’t nearly enough
Coil had six points
and tw o assists, K atie
Kilkenny had six points and
five rebounds and Regi Seitz
had five rebounds and two
steals.
It was ju s t the
opposite in Stanfield as the
Mustangs took a 15-9 lead
after one, getting nine points
from Seitz and extended it to
34-11 at the half, getting five
points, including a 3-pointer
from Coil Kylie Doherty
had four points in the third
as Stanfield got to within 44-
24, but the M ustangs
coasted through the fourth
for the win.
Seitz finished with
11 points and two steals,
with Doherty adding eight
points and five rebounds and
Coil scoring seven points, six
steals, four rebounds and
two assists. Kilkenny had 14
rebounds and three steals,
Lynan Bingham had six
rebounds and two steals,
Jenna Bowman had four
rebounds and two steals,
Matthews had three assists
and two steals, Kelsie Fox

After getting beat at home on Friday, Jan 21 by a
score of 64-40 by the Weston-McEwen Tigerscots, the
Heppner Mustang JV boys were nipped by the Stanfield
Tigers 47-46 on Saturday, Jan 22 in Stanfield The
Mustangs, now 5 and 5 on the year, will be at home against
Umatilla on Friday, Jan 28 and at Sherman County on
Saturday, Jan. 29.
The M ustangs fell behind early against the
Tigerscots trailing 11-3 after one, but came back getting
six points from M att M cCabe and four from Tony
Haguewood to trail 24-17 at the half The Mustangs still
trailed 38-27 after three quarter, but the Tigerscots went
on a roll in the fourth, despite four points from Quinn Peck
and a 3-pointer from Lane Bailey, to pull away for the win
Nacho Elguezabal led the Mustangs with 10 points,
with Peck adding eight points and McCabe adding six
McCabe had four points in the first quarter to help
the Mustangs to a 13-12 lead after one against the Stanfield
Tigers. Peck had four points and R.J. Farrens had three as
the Mustangs took a 26-21 lead into the locker room.
Justin Delveaux had a 3-pointer in the third, but
the Tigers came back to take a 34-32 lead after three
quarters. Elguezabal had eight points and McCabe hit four
o f four free throws in the fourth, but the Tigers were able
to hang on for the one-point win.
Elguezabal had 12 points, with Peck and McCabe
each adding eight points.

Lady Cardinals win two over
weekend

weekend, bringing their Big
Sky record to 5-0.
On Friday, the Lady
Cards visited Wheeler in a
see-saw gam e that saw
numerous lead changes lone
was up by one after the first
quarter, down by two at the
half and down by five after
three However, it was a big
18-point fourth quarter that
brought the Cardinals to
their finals winning margin of
one point, 48-47.

The Weston-McEwen Tigerscots showed why they
are ranked number three in the state as they built a 27-16
lead at the half and coasted to a 60-38 win over the Heppner
Mustang varsity girls on Friday, Jan 21 in Heppner in
Columbia Basin Conference action The Mustangs, now 3
and 2 in the CBC and 11 and 3 overall, have a key CBC
game at home against Umatilla on Friday, Jan 28 before
going to Sherman County on Saturday, Jan. 29
Megan Orr had four points and Susan Southworth
three, but the Tigerscots took a 19-7 lead after one and
kept it going in taking the 21-point lead at the half Shanna
Rietmann had six points in the second, including a 3-pointer
Orr had a rebound basket and Southworth hit two
free throws, but the Tigerscots built their lead to 45-20
midway through the third Orr scored six straight and Sarah
Price scored off a rebound to cut the lead to 47-28, but the
Tigerscots built their lead to 52-28 after three
Linsey Mitchell hit a short jumper and Madison
Bailey hit a running jumper then got a steal and a lay-in to
make it 56-38 then Orr hit two free throws and Lynan
Bingham scored off a rebound to close out the scoring for
the Mustangs
Orr finished with 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds
and had three steals Rietmann had six points, Mitchell had
eight rebounds, Price had six rebounds, Southworth had
five rebounds, Terra Wilson had four rebounds, Lyndi
Patton had three steals and Bailey had two steals.

Mustang girls pull away for
win at Stanfield

A 19-9 advantage in the fourth quarter helped the
Heppner Mustang varsity girls to pull away for a 49-36
win over the Stanfield Tigers on Saturday, Jan. 22 in
Stanfield in Columbia Basin Conference play The Mustangs
improved to 4-2 in the CBC and 12-3 overall and will be
back in CBC action with a key game at home against the 5
and 0 Umatilla Vikings on Friday, Jan. 28 before making
the trip to Sherman County on Saturday, Jan. 29.
Lyndi Patton had four points, including a 3-pointer,
as the Mustangs took a 10-6 lead after one and Madison
Bailey and Sarah Price each had four points in the second
as they extended their lead to 22-14 at the half
Terra Wilson hit a jumper early in the third, then
Megan Orr hit one o f two free throws, then scored off a
pass from Susan Southworth Sarah Price hit one o f two
free throws and Shanna Rietmann scored off a rebound to
make it 30-20 late in the third, but the Tigers went on a 7-
0 run to end the third, trailing just 30-27.
Bailey scored off a drive to open the fourth and
after the Tigers got to within one at 32-31, Price scored
off a pass from Bailey and Linsey Mitchell scored off a
rebound to make it 36-31. Bailey hit a 3-pointer to make it
39-33, then Rietmann and Southworth each hit two free
throws to make it 43-34 The Tigers came back with a
basket, but then missed five straight free throws and Orr
scored off a pass from Rietmann and Southworth hit one
o f two free throws with 1 43 left to make it 46-36. Wilson
hit one o f two free throws and Orr hit two more in the final
minute to seal the win
Bailey finished with nine points, four rebounds and
two assists Price also had nine points and nine rebounds
Orr had seven points, 12 rebounds and four steals, Wilson
had seven points, Rietmann had eight rebounds, all o f them
offensive, and four assists, Southworth had six rebounds
and three steals and Mitchell had five rebounds
