It was tournam ent tim e for the “ B” team Ponies, as
they traveled to Irrigon to participate on Dec 18 In the opening
gam e they took on the Rockets o f Pilot Rock Just when the
Ponies showed up, so did "Old M an W inter” and the Ponies
couldn’t even buy a bucket in the first half They were cold as
Jack Frost and when the Rockets lighted their fuel, they thawed
out and took an 11-5 halftime lead
In the second half, the Ponies traded buckets, but
couldn’t make it a closer game and the Rockets prevailed 17-
11

Chris Wellington with four points, Brian Holland with four and
Jordan Hatfield with three Other key players were Justin Key,
Tomas Elguezabal, Lane Wright, Zach McCarl, Luke Young,
and D rew Johnson

In their second gam e o f the tournam ent, the Ponies
took on the Tigers o f Stanfield It was their first meeting o f the
season and the Ponies responded to the w ake up call and
jum ped out to an early 13-10 lead The Tigers tried to claw
their way back into the game, but the Ponies stomped out any
attem pts to get the lead
The Ponies took it to the Tigers and outscored them
12-8 in the second and took a 25-18 win
The Ponies had a balanced scoring attack led by
Holland with eight points, Wellington with six, Young with three
and W right and Hatfield with tw o each O thers contributing
were Johnson, Key, Elguezabal and McCarl

It was the M ustangs
third straight win and improved
their record to 4-3 on the year,
as they will get back into

play at U m atilla on Friday,
Jan 7, before being at hom e
on Saturday, Jan 8 hosting
the Sherman County Huskies
Torres fed Brandon
Seitz for a quick bucket to
o p e n th e gam e, but Seitz
picked up his second foul just
1:38 into the first quarter and
had to go to the bench for the
rest o f the first quarter Torres
fed Rory Kilkenny for a lay-in
and Kory Paullus got a steal
and a lay-in to m ake it 6-1.

to give the M ustangs a 55-54
lead The Prospectors hit two
free throw s with 10 seconds
left to take a short-lived lead
as Torres came through at the
end and the Mustangs stole the
win
Torres finished with
19 points, 13 in the fourth,
three assists and three steals,

“A” team Ponies win one, lose one to
finish second in tournament

The "A ” team Ponies took on the W eston Panthers in
the second game o f the “A” team tournam ent The Panthers
had dom inated the Ponies both tim es they played them this
season, but the Ponies showed that some o f their best playing
com es at the end o f the season
Taking the Panthers to the mat in the first half the Ponies
pinned them dow n by four, with a score o f 11-7 A fter
intermission the Panthers craw led back and tied the score at
16 all
Overtime is where the heroes score to send their team
to play one more and the Ponies did just that, out scoring the
Panthers 6-0 to bring the final score to 22-16
The Ponies received another fine game from Spencer
Palmer and Brent Eckman who scored six points each, Jared
Huddleston brought in four and Dalton Wellman, Sam King
and Braden Britt each brought in two. R ounding about the
roster w ere Josh Shank and Joe Pranger

In the last gam e o f the tournam ent, the Ponies were
m atched up against the Umatilla Vikings This team had the
Ponies num ber all year, but your looking at a team that put
everything behind it and came out and played some heads up
basketball
In the first half, it was the Vikings that took the lead at
intermission with a score o f 14-9 In the second half, the Ponies
took charge and tried to whittle down the Vikings lead, at one
point taking it dow n to one, but they couldn’t get over the
hump and took some lumps leaving the final score 30-21 with
the Vikings winning
The Ponies took second place overall in the tournament
Scorers for the team were Wellman with tw o, Palmer
with 10, Britt, H uddleston and Shank with tw o each and
Eckm an with three Also helping the team effort w ere King
and Pranger

The Heppner M ustang JV boys couldn’t hang on to
leads in the fourth quarter and lost at Grant Union, 51 -41, on
M onday, Dec 27 and at Imbler, 42-37, on Tuesday, Dec
28 The Mustangs, now 3-3 on the year, will be back in action
at Umatilla on Friday, Jan 7 and back at home on Saturday,
Jan 8 against the Sherman County Huskies
The M ustangs took a 16-6 lead after one at John
Day getting six points each from Mikel Britt and Quinn Peck
and still led 28-25 at the half, getting six m ore points from
Peck in the second quarter Brendan McElligott hit a 3-pointer
in the third, but the Prospectors tied it at 36-36 after three
and outscored the M ustangs 15-5 in the fourth to take the
win
Peck led the M ustangs with 13 points, with Britt
adding nine points and McElligott seven
The M ustangs took a 15-7 lead after one at Imbler,
getting four points each from Peck and M att M cCabe and a
3-pointer from Lane Bailey and still led 23-18 at the half,
getting four points from McElligott and a 3-pointer from Justin
Delveaux in the second quarter
The M ustangs led 25-22 after three and got 10 points
from Andre Rauch to take a 37-33 lead with 2:05 left, but the
Panthers came back to tie it at 3 7-37 with 1:30 left and made
enough free throw s dow n the stretch to take the win, 42-37.
Rauch led the M ustangs with 10 points, with Peck
adding seven points and McElligott six

Mustang JV girls split
A fter getting outscored 31 -14 in the second half in
losing 40-26 at Grant Union on Monday, Dec. 27, the Heppner
M ustang JV girls rebounded with a 45-19 rout at Imbler on
Tuesday, Dec. 28 The M ustangs, now 3-4 on the year, will
be back in action at Um atilla on Friday, Jan. 7 and back at
hom e on Saturday, Jan 8 against Sherm an C ounty and on
Monday, Jan. 10 against Riverside
The M ustangs took a 9-6 lead after one at John Day,
getting seven points from Whitney M atthews and still led 12-9
at the half. The P rospectors came back in the second half to
take a 24-19 lead after three and extended it through the fourth
to take the win
M atthew s led the M ustangs with 10 points, six
rebounds and four steals, with Lynan Bingham adding eight
points. Cyde Coil had four rebounds and tw o blocked shots
and Regi Seitz had four steals
At Imbler, the M ustangs took a 12-3 lead after one,
getting six points from Kylie D oherty and four points from
Katie Kilkenny and extended it to 18-6 at the half, getting four
second quarter points from Matthews.
Aftan Betsinger had six third-quarter points and Coil
added four points as the M ustangs increased their lead to 32-
13 and got six points from Mahaley Huddleston as they coasted
through the fourth for the 45-19 win
Doherty led a balanced scoring effort with eight points,
four rebounds and three steals. Kilkenny follow ed w ith six
points, 11 rebounds, three steals and tw o assists Betsinger
also had six points, along with six rebounds and M atthew s
had six points and tw o steals. Coil had five steals and three
assists, Kelsie Fox had five rebounds and tw o steals, Seitz
had two steals and tw o assists, Baillie Keithley had three assists,
Taylor Kem pas had three steals and Jenna Bow m an had tw o
assists
