ODA’s Measurement Standards Division
offers tips on how to get what you pay for
H
a p t burned
hurnpH
D n o n n ' 't t get
when it comes to buying
firewood this fall That’s the
message from the Oregon
Department o f Agriculture
as it issues its annual caution
to consum ers w ho are
beginning to use their wood
stoves and fireplaces, as the
nights get cooler While most
firewood sellers deliver an
accurate amount, it’s always
a good idea to make sure
those deliveries “measure
up”
“ People often find
that their firewood is not the
quantity they asked for, so
they give us a call to
in v e stig a te ,” says Clark
Cooney, field operations
m anager w ith O D A ’s
M easurem ent S tandards
Division
The take home
message for consumers is to
remember the correct unit of
measurement for firewood
“ The only correct
method o f sale for firewood
is by the cord, fraction o f a
cord, or by cubic meter,”
says Cooney. “There are
other term s such as face
cord, rack, rick, pile, or truck
load that are used but are not
correct methods o f sale A
cord is a known, verifiable
standard ”
You d o n 't know
what you’re getting with a
“pile” o f firewood But a
cord is always the same
amount— 128 cubic feet o f
compactly stacked wood in
a rectangular form It can be
four feet high by four feet
wide by eight feet long It
can be two feet high by eight
feet wide by eight feet long
Just so it stacks up to 128
cubic feet
It’s always a good
idea to have the w ood
stacked tightly at the time o f
delivery
“There are at least
two things I recommend to
co n su m ers
p u rch asin g
firew ood,” says Cooney.
“First, be present during the
delivery and observe what is
actually being delivered
Second, have it stacked-
either you do it or pay the
seller to stack it for you The
extra cost may be well worth
it.”
A gain, a tig h tly
stacked quantity o f firewood
can be accurately measured
and translated into cords-the
only legal measurement for
the sale o f wood
“The elderly and low
income individuals are the
ones who tend to be taken
advantage of and they really
c an ’t afford to have this
happen to th e m ,” says
Cooney
Most wood sellers
play by the rules- especially
those who have been in the
business for a long time But
there are some who are
trying to make a quick buck
by taking advantage o f the
unsuspecting.
“If you have bought
firewood from someone in
the past and have not
experienced any problems, I
encourage you to continue
dealing with that individual
or company,” says Cooney
“ If you are buying from
someone you’ve never dealt
with before, it requires a little
higher level o f alertness on
your part ”
C o n tin u ed
high
heating and energy costs in
Oregon might lead to more
firewood transactions this
fall Buyers and sellers both
need to know the rules
“It is more likely that
during to u g h econom ic
times some people are going
to try and make a little extra
money on the side by cutting
firewood and selling it,” says
Cooney “There might be
more people out there who
are not familiar with the
m eth o d s o f sale for
firewood. There may also be
people out there who know
they aren’t conducting the
correct method o f sale Also,
m ore people might be
in terested in purchasing
firew ood this year as a
supplemental heating source
in the wake o f potential
utility rate hikes.”
There is also some
important paperwork that
consum ers should know
about
"Be sure to get a
completed receipt for your
purchase of firewood,” says
Cooney “The receipt needs
to include the name and
address o f the seller, your
name and address as the
purchaser, the date o f the
d elivery, the q u an tity
delivered in cords, the price
per cord, the total price, the
identity or species o f the
w ood and any quality
re p re se n ta tio n such as
‘se a so n e d ’
made
in
connection with the sale
Receipts are important to
both the buyer and the seller
and they provide very useful
information when following
up on complaints.”
Anyone unwilling to
provide a receipt or those
who try to sell firewood in
units other than in cords
might actually be selling you
a bill o f goods It could be a
tip-off that they are out to
shortchange you.
ODA does not
receive an overwhelming
num ber o f com plaints
regarding firewood, but it’s
something that happens each
year Since last October, the
department has received 18
firewood complaints Most
were valid com plaints o f
short measure
Misrepresentation of
firewood is covered by the
Deceptive Trade Practices
Act and can resu lt in
prosecution by the local
district attorney or action by
the Oregon Department of
Justice In the past, the
Justice D epartm ent has
levied fines for weights and
m easures v io latio n s in
Oregon related to firewood
sales. You can learn more
about firew ood sales by
visiting ODA’s Website The
M easurem ent S tandards
Division has its own page
with a section dedicated to
firew ood purchases. In
addition to information on
the legal requirements o f
selling firewood, you can
obtain other useful facts such
as the heating value o f
various species of wood that
might be purchased. The

is like any other business

attention and take an interest
in the matter The bottom
