Big plays hurt Mustangs against Warriors
Tyler Boyer breaks away from Amity defenders. No. 13 is Heppner Quarterback Matt
Van Cleave.
By Rick Paullus
An 80-yard punt
return in the first quarter and
a 72-yard run from
scrimmage for touchdowns
in the third quarter helped
the
d efen d in g
state
champion Amity Warriors
beat the Heppner Mustangs
27-14 on Friday, Sept. 3 in
Heppner.
It was the first game
of the year for both team and
it was delayed over two
hours as the Amity bus broke
down in Portland on their
way to Heppner.
The Mustangs won’t
have it much easier as they
play host to the Reedsport
Braves on Friday, Sept. 10
in another non-league game.
The Braves return many key
players from their team last
year that advanced to the
quarterfinals of the state
playoffs and are picked to
win the Big Fir Conference
this year.
The game started out
good for the Mustangs as
Matt Kenny fell on a Warrior
fumble at the 32-yard line
then ran twice for 15 yards
fo r a first dow n at the
seventeen. However, that
was as far as they would get
as a sack and a penalty took
the Mustangs out of scoring
range.
The M ustangs got
the ball back at their 39-yard
line after forcing a punt, but
were unable to move the ball
and were forced to punt. The
ball was touched by the
kicking team, but w asn’t
downed and an alert Warrior
picked up the ball and ran
untouched 80 yards for a
touchdown. The kick was
good and the Warriors had a
7-0 lead with less than four
m inutes left in the first
quarter.
The Mustangs took
over at their twenty-three
after the kick. Tyler Boyer
ran three times for 13 yards,
but a penalty forced a punt
w ith the W arriors taking
