Vote for Kerry to maintain Social Security To the Editor: 1 have been thinking and have com e to the conclusion that there hasn’t been much if anything said in the p apers or on TV concerning Social Security and Medicare. President Bush has been p rom oting turning these ag en cies over to private com panies. This might sound good to the misinformed voter at first glance. However, this is so m eth in g that could backfire that other way and would surely make more millionaires out o f the Wall Street brokers. Social Security has been one o f the few government agencies that have been successful right from the start. I know that Social Security has to over go changes if it is to survive. However, privatizing Social Security isn’t one o f them. So, if you want to save Social Security as it is today, vote for Kerry. People at my age, who were alive during the stock market crash in 1929 and have lived through the D ep ressio n , u n d erstan d what could happen to our retirement. Also, I know that the Washington politicians have been dipping into the Social Security Fund and backing it w ith w o rth less lO U s. Most o f this money has been going for “ pork b a rre l” spending not to national d efen se, or any oth er necessary expenses. The go v ern m en t owes Social Security way over a trillion dollars. Also, do you know that the Social Security Fund does not belong to you? It belongs to the government and if Congress so desires, they could disband it at anytime and we would have no Social Security. Sweet dreams. To the Editor: My name is Kenneth Matlack and I am running for Morrow County Sheriff. The political season is upon us and I have enjoyed the early stages o f my campaign. Many people of Morrow County have been very receptive o f my ideas and w hat a M atlack administration would look like for the people o f Morrow County. Recently, I became aw are o f several rumors about what will happen if I am elected Sheriff. One rumor that 1 want to stop immediately is that I plan to “clean house” and terminate current staff o f the Sheriff’s Office. This is not true. I have no in ten tio n o f term in atin g any sta ff currently employed by the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office. Two other rumors that do not re fle c t my p o sitio n concern Community Policing and the S h e riff’s O ffice Reserve Program. My position is to expand community policing efforts and organize as many n eig h b o rh o o d w atch programs as possible. This is especially true o f the Reserve Program. I want to increase, not decrease the size of the Reserve Program. I would like to see as many qualified people as possible become actively involved their communities and serve all parts o f the county. By now most o f the voters o f Morrow County have receiv ed an informational letter that was recently sent out. I must say again my campaign is about being av ailab le to the citizens o f the county and being actively involved with deputies in the field. If you have any q u estio n s or concerns, please know that I am available 24/7. If you have any questions about any issue, please come by or call me at (800) 291-1791 or my home at (541) 922-5173.
