All about 4-H Programs
Morrow County 4-H
has a total of 333 members
and 52 leaders participating
in
the
4-H
youth
development program. For
many years Morrow County
4-H served the needs of its
youth with the traditional 4H
program. In the past, that
was ap p ro p riate
and
additional program m ing
was not needed. Three years
ago an outreach program for
under served youth coming
from
d ifferen t
socioeconomic and cultural
backgrounds was added to
address the changing
demographics at the north
end of Morrow County.
As our county
continues to change, we
found a real need to add “Ag
In The Classroom” to the
curriculum for all o f our
small rural towns. As we
w atch
the
changing
com m unities in M orrow
County, we see most of the
youth going to school living
in town and not on farms or
ranches as in the past. “Ag
In The Classroom” will help
to keep all the youth in our
sm all rural com m unities
aware of agriculture and its
contribution to society.
The m ost recen t
addition to the 4-H program
w on’t actually take place
until this fall at Heppner
High School. In late July,
David Fowler (teacher) and
Jon Cain (student) attended
a National 4-H Conference
on technology. They
participated in a GPS/GIS
track. They learned all about
GPS units and how they
work. They also received
software to bring back to the
Heppner High school to use
in the classroom. They are
part of a team of Oregon 4-

take Mr. Fowler’s class will
also become 4-H members.
There will be a community
service component to this
program. Students who take
this class will do community
service using the GPS/GIS
skills they have developed in
the classroom. This is a new
partnership in education
between Morrow County 4-
H and M orrow C ounty
School district. The students
are going to receive training
