Obituaries
Walter J. Avery
Walter J. Avery, 77,
of lrrigon, died Sunday, July
25, 2004, of cancer.
A graveside service
w ill be held at II a.m .,
W ednesday, July 28 at
Prairie Creek Cemetery in
Joseph.
Avery was born to
John H enry and C elia
Frances Moore Avery, on
June 29, 1927, at Lostine.
He w orked on
several ranches throughout
W allow a C ounty before
m arrying Joy F rances
Bennett of Joseph on Sept.
15, 1948.
The couple moved
to Portland, where Avery
w orked on several area
farms and later worked in
the shipyards where he was
a
m em ber
of
the
B oilerm aker’s Union for
many years. The Averys
returned to Joseph in 1972
where they stayed until 1988
when they purchased a home
at lrrigon.
Throughout his life,
A very enjoyed hunting,
fishing and working with
horses. He loved to teach his
grandchildren the hobbies
he loved. He also enjoyed
working on cars.
He helped raise all
four o f his grandchildren
and was said to be a great
support to his entire family.
Survivors include
his wife, Joy, of lrrigon;
daughters, Violet Kelsey and
Shirley Taft, both of Prosser,

76, o f L ex in g to n , died
Monday, July 26, 2004 at his
home.
A

memorial service will be
held at 2 p.m., Monday, Aug.
2, at Lexington Cemetery.
Green was born at
Eightmile near Heppner on
Jan. 20, 1928 to Homer and
M a r y
B ra n n o n
Green. He
a tte n d e d
school at
Eightmile
and
at
Heppner.
He
served in
Harry Green
the U.S.
Army from April 4, 1946 to
Sept. 4, 1947. He returned
home and completed high
school, g rad u atin g from
H eppner High School in
1949.

He married his high
school sweetheart, Selma
Fae Orwick on July 23,1949
at H eppner. They w ere
married 55 years Friday.
G reen w orked a
variety of jobs including a
gas station, in a garage,
sawmill, wrecker driver and
the Star Theater in Heppner.
From 1964 to 1990,
he worked for the Morrow
County School District as a
custodian and bus driver. He
became friend and mentor to
teachers and children. He
cared deeply for them as if
they were one of his own
kids. He was honored at the
Eighth Grade Class of 1988.

adopted two children who
were the “light of his life,”
along
w ith
his
grandchildren.
E arly
in
his
re tire m e n t, he enjoyed
w oodw orking.
He
handmade hope chests for
h im se lf
and
several
members of the family. He
also built complete dining
furniture, china hutch and
h an d crafted the kitchen
cabinets. In the last couple
of years, also with his wife
Selma, he began making
windmills using bike wheels
and scrap metal and Selma
w ould paint them . His
grandchildren helped him
make several he gave to
nieces in Lexington.
Survivors include
his wife, Selma Green at the
home; daughters, Ella Mae
G reen, and frien d Tim
R ogers, o f Portland and
Betty Fae Voss, and husband
Joe, o f M ankato, MN;
g ra n d c h ild re n , Z ackary
W ight, H annah W ight,
M aranda W ight, G arret
Jo h n so n and B randon

granddaughter, SunShine
Wight; sisters, Lena Marvel

preceded in death by his

VanSchoiack; and several
aunts and uncles.

volunteers host the senior
noon meal on Aug. 4. The
menu of the day is pizza,
fresh veggies, fruity Jell-O
and rhubarb crumble.
RSVP has planned
tw o sum m er picnics for
volunteers and families in
the
M o rro w -U m atilla
County area: one at Weston
on July 28 and the other at
the Boardman M arina on
Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 11
a.m. to 2 p.m. The bus will
be available.
Those who plan to
attend should sign up in the
Center office by Friday, Aug.
13 at 4 p.m . RSV P is
providing hot dogs, fried
ch ick en , b ev erag es and
plates. Guests are asked to
bring a salad or dessert and
their own table service.
Water aerobics for
seniors is available at the
swimming pool on Tuesday
and Thursday each week
from 5-6 p.m. The fee is $2
per day. The pool is open to
senior activity only at the
stated time.
Heppner soldier activated with
National Guard
M ike Sw eek, o f
Heppner, a sergeant in the
O regon Army N ational
Guard, was recently called
to activ e duty. He is
currently in Ft. Bliss, TX
receiving training with his
unit before being deployed
overseas. Sweek serves as a
medic with his unit.
He recently sent his
mother, Evelyn Sweek, a
letter in which he included
a cadence the unit is
marching to that touched
him and he wanted to share
with others.
“This is a cadence
that we march too. I never
heard it before, and you can
put it in the paper. Kind of
brought tears to my eyes.”
