Mustangs blank Tigers for HJHS track teams

A no-hitter by Chuy Elguezabal helped the Invitational
Heppner Mustangs to an 11 -0 win in five innings over
the Stanfield Tigers on Tuesday, May 4 in Stanfield to
give them first place in the Columbia Basin Conference.
The Mustangs, 6 and 1 in the CBC and 17-1-1 overall,
will finish out the league schedule with a doubleheader
at Umatilla on Saturday, May 15 at 11 a.m.
The Mustangs went down quietly in the top of
the first as did the Tigers in the bottom half although the
Mustangs’ shortstop. Josh Gutierrez, went behind the
bag at second base to snap a groundball and threw to
first to get the out in what would prove to be the Tigers
best effort at a hit for the day.
In the second, Luke Murray doubled, Kyler
Lovgren was hit by a pitch. Nick Christman had a RBI
single, Cody Walton reached on a fielder’s choice,
Elguezabal hit a two-out two RBI double and scored on
a Jode Coil double to give the Mustangs a 4-0 lead.
They didn’t quit there though as they added four
more in the third when Gutierrez walked, Kory Paullus
hit a RBI triple, Kiel Naims walked, Murray had a RBI
single, Naims scored on a balk and Murray came home
on a wild pitch.
The Mustangs added three more in the fourth
when Coil reached on an error, Gutierrez walked and
both scored when Paullus reached on an error. Murray
and Lovgren both walked and Christman hit into a
fielder’s choice to score another run to make it 11-0.
Elguezabal lost his bid for a perfect game as he
hit the lead-off hitter in the bottom of the fifth, but struck
out the next batter and ended the game with two harmless
fly balls. He ended up with eight strikeouts for the game.
Murray went two for two with a double and
scored twice. Coil went two for four with a double.
Paullus had two RBI and scored twice, Elguezabal had a
double and two RBI, Christman had two RBI and
Gutierrez scored twice.

Mustangs sweep Rockets

Good pitching and timely hitting helped the
Heppner Mustang baseball team to a sweep of the visiting
Pilot Rock Rockets by scores of 13-2 in five innings and
4-0 on Saturday, May 8 in Columbia Basin Conference
play The Mustangs, 8-1 in the CBC and 19-1-1 overall,
wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader at
Umatilla on Saturday, May 15 before heading into the
District Tournament on Saturday, May 22 in The Dalles.
The Mustangs took an early lead in the first game
scoring two runs as Josh Gutierrez reached on a fielder’s
choice, Kory Paullus had a RBI double and Kiel Naims
had a RBI double.
The Rockets scored a run in the second and one
in the fourth to tie it at 2-2, but the Mustangs came right
back in the bottom half to break the game open with
nine runs.
Luke Murray doubled and scored on a Kyler
Lovgren single, Chuy Elguezabal was hit by a pitch, Jode
Coil walked, Gutierrez was hit by a pitch to force in a
run, Paullus had a RBI single, Naims reached on an error
to score a run, Murray was hit by a pitch to force in a
run, Kyler Lovgren scored two with a single and Nick
Christman scored two more with a double to make it 11 -
2 .
The Mustangs ended it in the fifth on the ten-run
rule when Gutierrez reached on a fielder’s choice and
Paullus hit a two-run home run to make it 13-2.
Elguezabal went the distance to pick up the win
giving up three infield hits while striking out five.
Paullus went three for four with a double, home
run, four RBI and scored three runs. Christman went two
for two with a double and two RBI. Lovgren went two
for three with three RBI and scored twice. Naims had a
double and two RBI, Murray had a double and one RBI,
Gutierrez scored three runs and Elguezabal and Coil each
went one for two.
The second game was scoreless until the third
when Christman singled, moved to second on a sacrifice
bunt by Cody Walton and scored on a double by Coil.
The Mustangs added three more in the fourth
when Paullus doubled and came home on a home run by
Naims. Murray and Lovgren singled and both moved up
on a wild pitch and Murray scored as Walton grounded
out.
Gutierrez made the lead stand up going the
distance allowing just three infield hits, two walks, hit
two batter, while striking out seven.
Murray went three for three. Paullus went two
for three with a double. Naims had a homerun and two
RBI and Coil had a double and one RBI.

Display ads are the boxed ads that run throughout the newspa­
per and are charged for by the amount of space. The larger the ad
the more it cost. Photos and graphics may be used in display ads.
Classified, or want ads, run in the section near the back of the
newspaper and are charged by the number of words in the ad.
Business directory ads are boxed ads at a discounted rate. You
must agree to run the ad unchanged (except for minor corrections)
for a minimum of three months.
Legal notices. The Gazette is the legal newspaper for various
public entities and is able to satisfy publishing requirements for
Morrow County.
Letters to the Editor
Letters to the Editor must be signed. The Gazette-Times will
not publish unsigned letters. Please include your address and phone
number on all letters for use by the G-T. The G-T reserves the
right to edit. The G-T is not responsible for accuracy of statements
made in letters. (Any letters expressing thanks will be placed in
the classifieds under “Card of Thanks” at a cost of $7)
Letters in poor taste or libelous will not be published.
Photos
The Gazette welcomes photos to run with news articles. We
accept either black and white or color photos and they can be re­
turned. We also accept digital photos. Email or bring the digitals
to the office on a disk. We also accept digital camera "chips" to
download the photos from your camera. Please contact us if you
are unsure how to submit your photo.

Open 9 a m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Advertisement
and news article deadline is 5 p.m. Monday for that week's paper.
The newspaper publishes on Wednesday of each week.
