lone Legion to recognize World War
II veterans
Plans have been
made at the lone American
Legion Post No. 95 and
Auxiliary Unit for a "World
War II Veterans Recognition
Day” on Monday. May 3 1.
Realizing that the
World War II veterans in this
area will not see the new
W orld War II M em orial
dedicated in Washington,
D.C., the lone A m erican
Legion Post No. 95 and
Auxiliary Unit decided to
have a ceremony to honor
the veterans from the lone
and Lexington area. The
W orld War II N ational
Memorial w ill be dedicated
on Saturday. May 29.
The serv ice will start
at 10:30 a.m. at the lone
Football Field M em orial
M onum ent and flag pole
area. The speaker will be
John M arshall, Interim
President of Blue Mountain
C om m unity
C ollege.
Marshall is a retired Marine,
having served during Desert
Storm.
The biggest event of
the day will be a ceremony
at the Legion Hall following
the cerem ony at the
Memorial Monument where
each veteran of World War
II in the lone and Lexington
area will receive special
recognition for his or her
service to A m erica. A
com m ittee
has
been
organized to coordinate this
presentation.
"We do not want one
World War II veteran in our
community to be missed,”
said
Bob
Baker,
Commander of Post No. 95.
"Even if the veteran cannot
attend the com m unity
celebration, m em bers of
Post No. 95 will see that
their recognition awards are
delivered to the veteran,” he
added.

from state lottery funds,
announces the award of up
to $26(),(XX) in grant funds
for econom ic projects in
Baker and Morrow counties.
The emphasis of the funding
is for projects that promote
healthy
co m m u n ities
through job creation and job
retention activities.
With less than half
of the previous biennium’s
funding revenue, the Baker-
M orrow
R egiona 1
Partnership 03-05 Strategy
is now m ore narrow ly
focused on activities that
work towards job-related
goals. Selection for funding
projects will be based on
a p p lic a tio n s
that:
1)
successfully demonstrate the
a b ility to co m p lete the
project outlined in the grant
Wranglers Riding Club gives season awards
The
W ranglers
Riding Club held the fourth
of its annual series of spring
play days on May 9. The
events were held this year at
the
M orrow
C ounty
F airg ro u n d s A rena in
Heppner on the afternoons
of April 18, 25, May 2, and
May 9. Each week there
were three different events
for the contestants. The first
two events were alw ays
barrel racin g and pole
bending. The third event was
different each w eek and
included the Rings Race,
Figure 8 Race, K eyhole
Race, and the Scurry Race.
All the kids who participated
received a bag of candy
treats at the fourth play day.
Overall season winners who
accumulated the most points
and attended at least 3 of the
four play days received nice
prizes such as belt buckles,
saddle b lan k ets, b ridle
headstalls, halters, ropes,
b u ck ets, etc. Y ounger
co n testa n ts all receiv ed
trophies for their efforts.
The season winners

Each y ear the
Wranglers Club also gives a
large traveling trophy to the
family or individual who has
show n
the
m ost
improvement in their riding
skills. This year’s winner
was 8-y ear-o ld Ryan
D ougherty. She is the
daughter of Cliff and Dawna
Dougherty of Heppner.
W rangler’s Riding
Club is open to anyone who
w ants
to
atten d .
M embership fees and the
annual breakfast they serve
at the M orrow C ounty
Rodeo help to pay for prizes
each year.
