Eugene Hall of Heppner was
recently inducted into the
Oregon State Elks “Hall of
Fame.” The event occurred
at the 87,h Annual Oregon
State Elks A ssociation
Convention held in Keizer
recently.
In the eighty-seven
years of the Oregon Elks,

have been honored by the

member of the Elks for over
forty-five years, and has
served the State Association
for more than thirty-tw o
years. He has held virtually
all local Lodge positions and
served on several State
committees, including many
years as a State Committee
chair. He was a member of
the fam ed “ R iver R ats”
under Grand Exalted Ruler
Frank Heise. He is a past
E xalted R uler o f the
Heppner Lodge, and Past
District Deputy of the Grand
E xalted R uler for the
O regon Elks N orth-E ast
district.
H all’s application
was submitted by his local
Lodge, and was approved by
the State Hall o f Fame
committee. Joining him at
the awards ceremony was
his wife of 56 years Harriet,
son John and grandson
Jason. A surprise visit by son
David and wife Nancy from
Montana was a special treat
for the Halls. A standing

local and State Association
friends rounded out the
affair.

shooters gathered together
April 17 to participate in the
1000-yard TV Shoot held at
Frank and Joe Halvorsen’s
Farm. The event brought in
$2000 for prizes for children
at the lone 4 ,h o f July
Celebration.
Two marksmen hit
the 27” TV. Then, after a
shoot out betw een Todd
Lindsay and Les Madden,
M adden cam e out the
winner of the$100 prize. He
then donated the prize back
for the celebration.
Enjoying the spirit
o f the ev en t, L indsay
Kincaid put up a second
$100 prize for anyone who
could hit a smaller TV sat
upon the larger one. This
prize w ent to R obert
Logsdon of Walla Walla.
Everyone enjoyed a
great time and good BBQ
that was provided by John
Clapp.

The month of May
started off with three major
m usic
co m p etitio n
achievements for 16-year-
old Amy Jepsen. Amy, who
is a sophomore at lone High
School this year, represented
the lone School as the
District 6 winner in both
harp and piano at the annual
Oregon School Activities
Association (OSAA) Solo
Music Championships. The
state finals were held this
year in C orvallis on the
cam pus of O regon State
University on May 1.
There w ere 30
different instrumental and
vocal solo categories with
441
m usic
students
rep resen tin g 103 high
schools participating in the
event. There were three
ju d g es for each o f the
different music categories.
Amy took first place
in the harp com petition.
Second place went to Nicole
Chang of Catlin Gabel High
School of Portland and third
was Adrienne Fletcher of
Forest Grove High School.
For the competition,

perform ed
“ Impromptu C aprice” by
Gabriel Pierne. Her harp
teacher is Denise Fujikawa
o f P ortland. State solo
w inners were announced
and m ed allio n s were
awarded to the top three
fin ish ers at an aw ards
cerem ony that night at
M ilam A uditorium . Amy
was one of only five students
to successfully defend the
state music title she had won
last year.
Jepsen
also
competed in the solo piano
division, one of the largest
and
m ost
in ten sely
competitive events. Out of
26 state fin a lists, Amy
fin ish ed in fifth place
overall. First place in piano
went to Nicholas Reynolds
o f F o rest G rove High
School. Nicholas and Amy
both study piano with the
sam e teach er, S hirley
B rendlinger of Portland.
Amy perform ed three
different pieces in the piano
competition: “Gardens in
the R ain ” by D ebussy, «
“Prelude #10” byJ.S. Bach,
and “Etude #4, Opus 10” by
Chopin.
Then on M onday,
May 3, Amy performed on
harp at the Monday Musical
Club of Portland for their
annual scholarship recital
program. She was awarded
$850 in scholarship money
that day. The M onday
M usical Club divided up
$6,000 in prizes this year to
nine vocal and instrumental
p erfo rm ers. To win the
scholarship money, Jepsen
co m peted as one o f 28
musicians, ages 16-22, in a
M onday M usical C lub
C o m p etitio n e a rlie r in
M arch and fin ish ed in
second place. The recital and
reception on May 3 were to
honor the nine winners and
aw ard them th e ir prize
money. The other winners
included p ia n ists and
v o calists from P ortland
State University. Linfield
College. Portland. Corvallis,
and C lack am as High
Schools.
Amy is the daughter
of Bill and Nancy Jepsen of
H eppner. She has been
studying piano for 10 years
and harp for eight years.
