A funeral was held A pril 8 at th e B o a rd m a n C om m unity Church. Burial with m ilitary honors w as at B o a r d m a n ’s R iv e rv ie w Cem etery, w ith a reception fo llo w in g at th e P o rt o f Morrow Convention Center. Allen was bom Sept. 29, 1 9 28, at C o n d o n , to A rthur and L ena “ M a b el” Gray A llen. He grew up and attended schools in Boardman. A fter graduating from high school in 1946, he joined the Navy, serving three tours in Korea during the Korean War. H e w a s a n u n d e r w a te r dem olition expert (the unit is now know n as the “ N avy Seals.”) A llen spent 11 years in active duty w ith the Navy before attending the University o f W a sh in g to n w h e re he e a rn e d a b a c h e lo r o f arts degree in Far East History and a ju ris doctor degree in Law. He worked at the Walla Walla Union Bulletin for a time before moving to Weston in 1966 and g o in g to w o rk a t L a m b Weston. O n Nov. 25, 1973, he married Ava West-Harris in W alla W alla. In 1975, they returned to Boardman, where he was em ployed at Gourm et Foods. A llen was a m em ber • o f the Naval Reserves retiring with 24 years of total service, w ith the rank o f E-7, C hief Petty Office ETC. In 1981, the A llens m oved to W enatchee, WA, where Allen was employed by Philippi Fruit until 1983. They lived at Enterprise for a short tim e and then retu rn ed to Boardman. H e s e rv e d as C ity M anager o f B oardm an from 1990 u n til 1993 w hen he retired. He continued to help m an y p e o p le th ro u g h o u t O regon and rem ained active in p o litic s a n d p o litic a l campaigns. He enjoyed traveling ' with his family and in the past five years visited 20 states, drove to A laska and M exico a n d v is ite d s ix f o re ig n countries. Two weeks ago on his way to M exico he was on the Colorado River riding a jet ski. Allen enjoyed golfing, bowling (he was the bowling cham pion o f the 13th Naval District), playing pool (he was second at the 1961 N ational NCAA Competition in Illinois w hile on the U niversity o f W ashington B illiard Team ), and m ost o f all he enjoyed spending time with his family (especially at family Christmas parties). He w as a past president o f the Boardm an C h a m b e r o f C o m m erce, a P o rt of M o rro w Commissioner, Vice Chairman o f th e M o rro w C o u n ty Planning Commission, on the Statew ide E nergy A dvisory C o m m itte e , a m a y o r o f Boardman and a City Budget Chairman. He was a m em ber o f the M asonic Lodge. John C. “Jay” Standerfer Jo h n C. “Jay ” Standerfer, 76, a resident of P en d leto n fo r the p ast 34 years, died Sunday, A pril 4, 2 0 0 4 , at S u ttle C a re and Retirement in Pendleton. A funeral w as held A pril 9 at B ishop Funeral Chapel in Pendleton. He was bom M ay 8, 1927, at M cA lister, O K , to Benjamin Franklin and Erma M arie Pollan Standerfer. H e liv e d w ith his fam ily at K iow a and in the J a c k F o rk m o u n ta in s o f Oklahoma until 1942 when the family moved to Mitchell, OR. He jo in ed the A rm y w h e n he w a s 18 a n d v o lu n te e r e d fo r th e paratroopers, serving with the 11th A irborne D ivision. He was stationed in Japan. A fter being discharged in 1947, he returned to O regon w here he spent m ost o f his w orking career in the lum ber industry. He w orked at saw m ills in M onum ent, R eeds M ill near H ard m an , W a its b u rg , Spokane and Prineville. O n July 5, 1964, he m a r r ie d N o n a G ra h a m L eathers at R eno, NV. They lived at L ong B each, WA, w h e re th e y o w n e d a n d operated a m otel and trailer park until 1970 w hen they m oved to P endleton w here they have lived for the past 34 years. He had been employed at L ouisiana Pacific M ill in Pilot R ock and later w orked for Dobyns Hart Pest Control. He enjoyed outdoor a c tiv itie s , g a rd e n in g , the cam araderie o f the hunting cam p, family and friends and lo v e d s p o ilin g h is g ran d c h ild re n , n iec e s and nephew s. Vaughn Two deputies in stable condition after incident in Irrigon M o rro w C o u n ty Sheriff’s Deputies Jeff Lambier and B rian S nyder w ere in stable condition on Tuesday, A pril 13, at G ood Shepherd M edical Center in Hermiston after they w ere injured in an incident in Irrigon on Monday, A p r il 12, a c c o r d in g to M o rro w C o u n ty S h e r if f ’s Office. The deputies suffered injuries to their heads and hands inflicted upon them by Shane Hartung, 32, o f Irrigon, w ith an e d g e d w e a p o n , according to a press release from M orrow County District Attorney David Allen. The alleged suspect, Shane Hartung, 32, o f Irrigon w a s s h o t a n d k ille d . A n a u to p s y w a s p e r f o r m e d Tuesday m orning in Portland by the Oregon State M edical Examiner’s Office. Preliminary results indicate H artung was shot tw ice, once in the neck area and once in the sternum. It is not clear at this time which shot or com bination o f shots proved fatal. A full m edical e x a m in e r’s report is being c o m p le te d . R e s u lts o f toxicology tests are pending and h av e not y et been released. It is not clear from which weapon the shots were fired. B allistics tests will be c o m p le te d by the O regon State Police Crim e Lab. The incident began at 10:47 a.m., Monday, when the d e p u tie s r e s p o n d e d to a dom estic distu rb an ce call. O re g o n S ta te P o lic e is continuing their investigation into the tim ing and sequence o f events at the scene.
