Chamber Chatter
By Claudia Hughes, Exec. Dir.
O ur day-to-day lives are m uch like w riting a book.
Som etim es a day will be worth a paragraph, while other days
cover a chapter or som etim es even an entire hook. As we go
through life and consider decisions, it helps to rem em ber that
the direction w e choose to follow or choices we make will be
w ritten in our ow n personal book within us, published in its
entirety. This book may or may not become public know ledge,
but it is always “ours” and will be “written” because o f choices
or circumstances we make. When we struggle w ith a decision,
we might ask ourselves, “Do we want this written in our hook?”
A s we answ er that question, choices will be easier.
Your Cham ber o f Com m erce is working on “writing a
new chapter” and w e're excited about adding it to “our book” .
W hile the C ham ber has focused on “creating a positive
environm ent where business, community, and people thrive,”
it plans to w ork even harder to bring visitors to H eppner and
to prom ote events locally. Board m em bers are researching
ways to bring activities to Heppner, which draw visitors. There
are groups who travel around putting on ev ents for communities,
ranging from dancing groups to medieval jesting, from remote
air or boat races to lawn mower races. The recent Barrel Racing
Series put on by the Munkers family at the fairgrounds continues
to bring visitors to Heppner. The M orrow County OH V Park
is attracting visitors. The Little League is working on Saturday
nights at the m ovies. A nd o f course, there are the traditional
events such as Town and Country, St. Pat's Parade, Celebrate
H eppner and the Pie A uction, the M orrow C ounty Fair and
Rodeo Parade, the O ctoberfest (new this year), and the
Christmas Light Parade and Tree Auction in which the Chamber
is directly involved.
The C ham ber's thinking is that the m ore events and
activities that occur in Heppner, spread over the year, the more
positive exposure the com m unity w ill hav e, thus introducing
more people to Heppner and the Willow Creek Valley. Bringing
in outside events will low er the burnout level o f th e m any
volunteers doing everything, and com plim ent our businesses
and organizations. “ Heppner for all Season.”
W hat can you as a com m unity do to help? Share your
ideas. Let the Cham ber know w hen your events are occurring
and information about them. People call all the time and wonder
w hat is going on in Heppner. If you tell the C ham ber, the
C ham ber will tell them . O ur strength lies in com bining our
collective talents and our commitment to solve problems, then
following through with an action plan, and finally remembering
to celebrate our successes.
A nd, w ith that said, H ep p n er's Wee Bit O ' Ireland
Celebration is ju st two weeks away, scheduled for M arch 11
to 14. To see the full schedule o f events visit www.heppner.net.
C om e rain or shine, our hills are already w earing the green.
And may the “luck o ’ the Irish” shine on all o f Morrow County’s
trem endous volunteers.
