lone boys lose to Dufur in
District Playoffs

The lone Cardinal varsity boys lost to the Dufur
Rangers in the District Playoffs at Umatilla on Thursday, Feb.
19.
The game was close, with the score tied, 21-21, at
halftime. In the third quarter, Dufur picked up a three-point
lead. The quarter ended, 31 -34. Both teams scored ten points
in the fourth quarter, and lone lost, 41 -44.
Tyler Brown led the Cardinals with 19 points. Arthur
Ekstrom had eight points. Others contributing were Curtis
Thompson, Nick Christman and Kelly Thompson with four
points each and Tyler Raible with two points.
Brown led with eight rebounds, one steal and five
assists. Ekstrom had five rebounds; Curtis Thompson had three
rebounds; Christman had two rebound, two steals and two
assists; Kelly Thompson had one rebound, one steal and two
assists; Raible had one rebound and one steal; and John Walton
had one rebound.
Coach Dennis Stefani said, “ It was a good season,
and gives us something to build with for next year.”

Mustangs fall to Rockets at
lone girls edge past Condon District
in overtime

In a close game at Umatilla on Thursday, Feb. 20, the
lone Lady Cardinals edged past the Condon Blue Devils in
overtime at the District Playoffs.
The score was tied 6-6 at the end o f the f ir \ quarter.
In the second period, Condon gained two points, leading 11 -
13 at halftime. lone narrowed the lead one point, 21 -22 in the
third period.
With less than five seconds left in the game, and lone
behind 27-30, Natalie McElligott shot a very long three-pointer
and tied the game 30-30. In overtime, Condon shot seven
points and lone edged past them with nine points, winning the
game 39-37.
Natalie McElligott led the Lady Cardinals with 14
points, including one three-point field goal. Others adding points
were Eva Chitty w ith eight points; Barbara Holland with seven;
Sara Peck with five; Emily Key with one three-point field goal;
and Amber Patton with two points.
McElligott also led with 11 rebounds, six steals and
one assist. Holland had five rebounds, one steal and one assist;
Peck had four rebounds, two steals and one assist; Ashly Grams
had four rebounds; Chitty had three rebounds, six steals and
McElligott led w ith 11 two assists; Patton had two rebounds; Key had one steal; and
rebounds, three steals, four Jenny Griffith had one assist.

a charm as the H eppner
Mustangs fell to the Pilot Rock
Rockets 68-56 in the District
7 2A championship game on
S atu rd ay , Feb. 21 in
Pendleton at the Convention
Center. The Mustangs beat the
Rockets twice in the regular
season, but went cold in the
fourth quarter to fall to 20 and
3 on the year.
By finishing second,
the Mustangs will host the
third place team from the
Wapiti League, Joseph, on
Thursday, Feb. 26 at 6:30
p.m. and with a win will play
at the number one seed from
the Tri-River League, number
one ran k ed R egis. The
Mustangs beat the Rams in the
first game of the season at the
Santiam Christian Tournament
by one point late in the game.
Luke Murray got the
Mustangs going by hitting a
jum per and a 3-pointer to
make it 5-2, but the Rockets
went on an 8-0 run. Murray
scored off a pass from Chuy
Elguezabal and Brandon Seitz
hit one of two free throws, but
the Rockets led 12-8 after
one.
Murray hit a running
jumper, but the Rockets led
18-10. Brian Smith scored
twice off rebounds and Seitz
scored off a rebound, but the
Rockets led 26-16. Murray hit
two free throws and Smith hit
one o f two to make it 26-19
when a scramble after a loose
ball ended up with Justin
Botefuhr getting punched
above his left eye opening up
a gash and leav in g him
bloodied. Murray hit the two
free throws from the flagrant
foul, Seitz scored off a pass
from Elguezabal and Smith
scored tw ice to give the
Mustangs a 27-26 lead with
just over a minute left. The
Rockets hit three free throws
at the end o f the second to
take a 29-27 lead at the half.

rebound to tie it up to open
the third. The Rockets scored
five straight, but M urray
converted a three-point play
and Elguezabal hit a short
jumper to tie it at 34-34. The
Rockets came back with five
straight again, but Elguezabal
hit a 3-pointer and Murray
scored off a drive to tie it again
at 39-39. After four straigh
throws, but that was the last
lead the Mustangs would have
as the Rockets went on a 10-
2 run to go up 61-54.

to make the final score 68-56.
The Mustangs hurt

compared to the Rockets 25

about Haiti trip
Emily and Meaghan
Unruh o f Heppner will be
putting on a presentation
about their recent mission trip
to the country of Haiti. Both
girls are currently nursing
students at Oregon Institute of
Technology. They went on a
m ission trip during their
Christmas break in December
with an organization called
STEM
