Mustang JY' girls win two
Cardinal JY Girls Defeated By
Dufur Rangers

The Heppner Mustang JV girls held on to beat the
Pilot Koek Rockets, 30-26, at home on Friday, Jan. 23, and
followed that up w ith a conv incing 48-13 w in at Culver on
Saturday, Jan. 24. The Mustangs improved to 7 and 5 on the
year, with games at Weston-McEwen on Friday, Jan. 30 be­
fore coming home to play Stanfield on Saturday, Jan. 31.
The Mustangs led 7-2 after one against the Rockets,
getting three points from Sarah Price, and led 15-10 at the
half, getting four points from Regi Seitz. They increased their
lead to 30-22 after three, getting eight points from Lynan
Bingham and four from Laurie Murray. The Mustangs held on
for the 30-26 w in, despite going scoreless in the fourth.
Bingham led the Mustangs with eight points and six
rebounds. Seitz added six points, six rebounds and three steals.
Price had seven rebounds and five steals. Terra Wilson had six
rebounds and three steals. Lyndi Patton had nine rebounds
and Sandra Krotzek had two assists.
Patton had six points and Bingham, three, as the Mus­
tangs jumped out to an 11-2 lead after one at Culver. Mahaley
Huddleston had four points and Seitz hit a three-pointer in the
second as they took a 25-4 lead at the half. They led 36-10
after three, and coasted to the easy win in the fourth.
Patton had 14 points, eight rebounds, two steals and
two assists. Bingham added seven points and three steals.
Heather Yocom had five rebounds and three steals. Murray
grabbed 10 rebounds. Brittney Herbisonhad four rebounds.
Price had four steals. Seitz and Blair Keithley each had three
steals, and Krotzek had two steals.
All the Mustangs scored at least one point in the game.

District Tournament sees
format change

The lone Cardinal J V girls were defeated by the Dufur
Rangers 22-35 at lone on Monday, Jan 19.
The Cardinals played a good game, but fell behind 8-
18 at halftime and weren’t able to catch up to the Rangers.
Abby Key led the team with seven points. Stephanie
Holland and Amber Patton had four points each. Ashly Grams
had three points. Also contributing were Tina Tuzarova and
Simone Reisenbauer with two points each.
Patton had 11 rebounds, one steal and one assist.
Holland had 10 rebounds and one steal. Key had four
rebounds, four steals and one assist. Tuzarova had four
rebounds and one steal. Jenny Griffith had three rebounds,
one steal and three assists. Kayla LaRue had three rebounds
and two steals. Alyssa Rietmann had tw o rebounds, three steals
and one assist. Reisenbauer had two rebounds, one steal and
one assist. Grams had one rebound and one steal. Kim Morris
had one rebound.
Cardinal JV Girls Score Big Win
Over Helix

The lone Cardinal JV girls outscored Helix 57-25 at
lone on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
At the end o f the first quarter lone lead 9-2. The
Cardinals great defense kept Helix from scoring in the second
quarter. The quarter ended 26-2. lone made 21 points in the
third quarter and increased the lead 47-13. Although Helix
outscored lone 10-12 in the fourth quarter; it wasn’t enough
to secure the win. The final outcome was lone 57, Helix 25.
Ashly Grams lead the Cardinals with 12 points, and
Abby Key trailing behind her with 11 points. Also contributing
was Stephanie Holland with eight points; Amber Patton with
seven; Kim Morris had six; Jenny Griffith had five; Alyssa
Rietmann and Tina Tuzarova contributed four points each.
Patton had eight rebounds and two steals. Holland
had six rebounds, four steals and one assist. Kayla LaRue had
six rebounds and one steal. Griffith had four rebounds and one
steal. Key had three rebounds, four steals and four assists.
Rietmann had three rebounds, three steals and three assists.
Morris had two rebounds and one steal. Tuzarova had one
rebound, one steal and one assist. Grams had two steals and
two assists.
lone J V girls defeat Central Christian

It was no challenge for the lone Cardinal JV girls to
defeat Central Christian at lone on Friday, Jan 23. In two
quarters, lone outscored Central Christian 37-11.
Amber Patton led the team with 16 points. Also aiding
the win was Ashly Grams with nine points; Jenny Griffith with
six; Stephanie Holland with four; and Abby Key with two
points.
Amber Patton also led with five rebounds, two steals
and three assists. Kim Morris had two rebounds; Griffith had
two rebounds, one steal and one assist; Abby Key had one
rebound, one steal and one assist; Grams had one rebound
and two assists; Tina Tuzarova had one steal and one assist;
and Kayla LaRue had one assist.
Cardinal JV girls defeat Cascade
Locks

In a two-quarter game, the lone Cardinal JV girls
defeated the Cascade Locks Pirates, 26-6, at Cascade Locks
on Saturday, Jan 24.
Amber Patton led the Cardinals with 10 points. Adding
to the score was Ashly Grams with eight points; Jenny Griffith
with four; Abby Key and Alyssa Rietmann added two points
each.
Patton had nine rebounds and one steal; Grams had
four rebounds and two steals; Key had three rebounds and
two steals; Griffith had five steals and one assist; Rietmann
had two rebounds, one steal and two assists; Kim Morris had
two rebounds and one steal; Kayla LaRue had two rebounds;
and Stephanie Holland had one steal and one assist.

Wainwright to compete in NCTE
writing competition
Jessica Wainwright, a
Heppner High School junior,
has been n o m in ated by
language arts teachers Jeannie
Collins and Linda Dutcherto
represent HHS in the National
Council ofTeachers of English
writing competition. Based on
current enrollment in grades
10,11, and 12, Heppner High
School is only allowed one
nominee. The NCTE gives
ach iev em en t aw ards to
en co u rag e high school
students in their writing and to
recognize publicly some of the
best student writers in the
nation. The NCTE is looking
for writers who exhibit the
power to inform and move an
audience through control of a
wide range o f the English
language.
In the
sp rin g ,
Wainwright, in no more than
two hours, will write under
supervision an impromptu
them e designated by the
NCTE. Wainwright will submit
this impromptu theme along
with one sample she considers
to be her best w ork,
regardless o f the amount of
revision. Her “best writing”
cannot exceed ten typed
double-spaced pages. NCTE
w ill not accept research
pap ers, term papers or
novels.

est to the communities o f lone, Lexington, Heppner and the sur­

There is no charge for news articles, but if the article is a money­
making activity for a person or business other than a non-profit or
community service organization, it must run as a paid advertise­
ment.
Advertisements
There are several different types o f advertisements in the Hep­
pner Gazette.
Display ads are the boxed ads that run throughout the newspa­
per and are charged for by the amount o f space. The larger the ad
the more it cost. Photos and graphics may be used in display ads.
Classified, or want ads, run in the section near the back o f the
newspaper and are charged by the number o f words in the ad.
Business directory ads are boxed ads at a discounted rate. You
must agree to run the ad unchanged (except for minor corrections)
for a minimum o f three months.
Legal notices. The Gazette is the legal newspaper for various
public entities and is able to satisfy publishing requirements for
Morrow County.
Letters to the Editor
Letters to the Editor must be signed. The Gazette-Times will not
publish unsigned letters. Please include your address and phone
number on all letters for use by the G-T. The G-T reserves the right
to edit. The G-T is not responsible for accuracy o f statements
made in letters. (Any letters expressing thanks will be placed in the
classifieds under "Card o f Thanks” at a cost o f $7)
Letters in poor taste or libelous will not be published.
Photos
The Gazette welcomes photos to run with news articles. We
accept either black and white or color photos and they can be
returned. We also accept digital photos. Email or bring the digitals
to the office on a disk. We also accept digital camera “chips” to
download the photos from your camera. Please contact us if you
are unsure how to submit your photo.

Open 9 a m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Advertisement
and news article deadline is 5 p.m. Monday for that week’s paper.
The newspaper publishes on Wednesday o f each week.
