Honkers, 72 to 29, in their first
league game o f the season. At
half-time the Lady Cards lead
the H onkers, 36 to 12.

Griffith, nine points, Emily Key,

The w eather is w hat
everyone dreams about-in the
mid-80s-especially now with
sub-zero tem peratures and
inches o f snow in m ost o f
Oregon. “ I miss the weather,”
says Janelle, who now speaks
E nglish w ith a very slight
Spanish accent, “but mostly 1
miss speaking Spanish every
day. N o one in my h ouse
spoke English. A fter about a
m o n th m y m om sa id I ’d
im proved. A fter about the
sixth-m onth m ark I started
speaking Spanish about h a lf
the time.”
She attended Spanish
classes at the university with
all Haitian people because she
had started at the university
independently o f any exchange
program . The H aitians, who
speak C reole because Haiti
was a French colony, have to
learn Spanish when they come
to The Dom inican. “ We both
had to learn the same language

communicate,” said Janelle

classes, what did Janelle do in
her spare tim e? Dance, dance,
dance! W hile in Santiago she

Saturday nights people dress
up an d go to the b ar and
alm ost every little place has a
dance floor. Almost everyone
dresses up. I had to change
from my tennis shoe dancing,”
laughs Janelle. She also went
to the beach on the N orth
Shore o f the country whenever
she could. Around an hour and
a h a lf aw ay on a m etro-style
bus, the beach featured warm,
blue waters. The North Shore

traveling around the country,
once taking a trip around the
largest lake in The Dominican,
know n for its iguanas and
alligators. “ I d id n ’t see any
alligators, though,” she said.
She w as also able to attend
the Pan A m gam es, w hich
were held there in August, and
w atched the U.S. team play
softball and volleyball. Also at
the g a m e s, she saw M iss
Universe, A m elia Vega, who
is D o m in ic a n , a n d th e
president o f The D om inican
Republic.
Janelle has also met a
w ide range o f people-from
family, to classmates in school
to shop keepers. She m et a
group o f m en w ho played
softball and was asked to join
their team w hen they learned
that she could play. She had
p la y e d at H e p p n e r H ig h
School and at Mt. Hood. One
w eek she even earn ed the
Most Valuable Player trophy.
“ 1 kind o f stepped up to an
opportunity,” she laughed. The
team played from A pril until
late September when the rains
started. "W e had a tropical
storm that cam e through the
end ofNovember, but it w asn’t
as bad as people thought,” she
said. “Then two weeks before
I left in D ecem ber (to com e
hom e to H eppner), it w as
beautiful.” Also during her stay
in T h e D o m in ic a n , sh e
experienced a 6.5 earthquake,
but even that d id n 't seem to
faze her much.
Surprisingly, Janelle
m et s e v e ra l p e o p le fro m
Portland while she was in The
Dominican and had numerous
visits from friends and relatives.
In F ebruary her aunt Jean
M arie H ealy and four o f her
friends cam e to visit. In M ay
C arm en cam e to stay for a
m onth and Jerry cam e for a
week. She met up with former
classmate Brooke Boyer from
Lexington, Brooke’s boyfriend
and his fam ily and also had
visits from her brother and
sister-in-law, Joseph and Alex
Healy, and a friend G ustavo
Gonnell from New York.
W hile Janelle misses
seeing her friends and family,
she has decided to return to
the D om inican, at least fo ra
w hile. But this tim e, laughs
C arm en, she has to get a job.
J a n e lle p la n s on
returning to The D om inican
this Thursday (around a 16-
hour trip), but she w on’t leave
the H ealys e m p ty nesters,
however. Carmen’s niece from
The Dominican, Yudelka Cruz,
arrived at their hom e around
the first o f N ovem ber and
plaas on staying in the U.S. until
February.
