projects. The projects that
may have been jeopardized by
a shortfall in CSEPP funds
include the evacuation project
for the City o f Hermiston,
upgrades to existing over­
p ressu rized schools, and
additional warning sirens and

Immediate Response Zone.

Travelers to see
new state lodging
tax
Beginning in January,
all guests staying at Oregon
hotels, m otels, inns, and
recreational vehicle parks will
see a new tax on their lodging
bills.
T he 2003 O regon
L egislature established a
permanent state lodging tax o f
one percent o f the fee guests
pay for overnight lodging. Tax
revenues w ill be used to
prom ote O regon tourism
through the Oregon Tourism
Commission. Receipts could
reach about $ 10 million a year,
according to figures from the
Legislative Revenue Office.
Lodging providers
will calculate the tax, add it to
guests’ bills, and give guests a
receipt. Guests may be able to
deduct the taxes on their
federal and state returns if they
are ordinary and necessary
expenses o f the taxpayers'
trade, business, or income
producing activity.
