had an un ex p ected v isitor
M onday m orning w hen he
opened the new spaper office
for business. An intruder had
broken in the night before, and
w as hiding under his desk
w hen he arrived at 8:30 a.m.
Sykes said he noticed
something was wrong w hen he
saw office desk draw ers had
been rifled and other items
w ere scattered around the
floor. W hen he went to check
his computer he noticed a foot
sticking out from under the
desk. Sykes said the suspect
was curled up under his desk
h id in g . H e s p o k e to th e
intruder for a while and at one
point asked her nam e (which
she refused to give), before
calling police.
The person escaped
by taking out a w indow in a
back room when Sykes went
to get the police. N othing so
far h as b e e n fo u n d to be
missing, however, quite a few
b o x e s lo ad e d w ith o ffic e
supplies were found around the
building, apparently waiting to
b e r e m o v e d fro m th e
p r e m is e s . T h e s u s p e c t
a p p a r e n tly g a in e d e n try
through a broken w indow at
the back o f the building.
The suspect was last
seen heading north on G ale
Street at about 8:55 a.m. She
was described as w hite, 5 foot
4 inches tall, slight ofbuild, with
long brow n hair and in her
e a rly tw e n tie s. P olice are
continuing their investigation.

around 2:48 p.m., a call came

harassing a 13-year-old female
juvenile in Heppner.

was lodged at Umatilla County
Jail. He w as released on his
own recognizance on Monday,

at 1:30 p.m. Boys competition
will be held in one gym, girls in
the other.
Local co-chairs o f the

Dean Robinson. The Elks have
sponsored the annual Hoop
Shoot affair for many years. All
particip an ts w ill receive a
certificate o f accomplishment.

group will go on to com pete
in the District com petition in
H erm iston later in January.

Lexington Airport completes
new automation

at Lexington A irport. This
system will allow pilots to call
the airport and receive current
w e a th e r c o n d itio n s . T h e
w e a th e r in fo r m a tio n is
updated every 20 minutes and
is available 24 hours a day.
Currently, the inform ation is
only available by telephone,
but will broadcast on a VHF
frequency in the near future.
