Heppner hosts first round playoffs

Saturday, Nov. 8, in the first
round o f the Les Schwab/US
Bank/O SA A Class 2A state
playoffs. The gam e will be
held in Heppner, beginning at
1 p.m.
This is the fifth year
H e p p n e r, 7 a n d 0 in the

and 9 and 0 overall, has taken
the conference title.

Metropolitan area, in an effort
to b e tte r u n d e rs ta n d th e
problem s and challenges o f
rural Oregon, toured Gilliam
county Oct. 27. The trip was
a r r a n g e d a n d h o s te d by
Columbia Basin Electric.
Four representatives
from the W illam ette Valley,
along w ith several Eastern
O regon representatives and
s e n a to rs v is ite d th e new
Arlington golf course, the wind
farm near Condon and v arious
other sites before having dinner
at the Condon Hotel. Some o f
the representatives stayed over
n ig h t at th e h o tel b e fo re
returning to Portland the next
day.
The group traveled
from Portland by small bus and
the first stop was the Arlington
g o lf course. From there the
legislators, along with som e
Columbia Basin Electric board
m em bers and others, w ere
treated to a tour o f the waste
facility in Arlington by Gilliam
County Judge Laura Pryor.

and Arlington and then moved
on to the new wheat marketing
facility at the Gilliam County
Fair Grounds.
At the facility a food
scientist is studying better and
new w ays fo r farm ers to
market their wheat to exploit
new m arkets. M uch o f the
Northw est wheat m arket has
been taken away by Australian
farm ers w ho are w illing to
se p a ra te th e ir w h eat into
various categories for market
purposes. The food scientist at
the m arketing lab show ed
s a m p le s o f e x p e rim e n ta l
baked goods she has been
testing.
The group next went
to Condon where they toured
the new Educational Service
D istrict b u ild in g and 911
center. A tour o f the m obile
telecommunications classroom
was also given. The m obile
classroom can be taken to
various small schools in the
Gilliam /W heeler county area
w h e re d iffe re n t ty p e s o f
classes are taught and then
broadcast to other school via
telecommunications. The ESD
d ir e c to r s a id th e m o b ile
classroom is also a boon for

Winter snow hits Heppner
As the winter snow hit Heppner the night of Nov. 2 and Nov. 3, Abigail
Marick, 17 months, daughter of John and Kathy Marick of Heppner,
experiences her first snowy activities.
Contest brings in food
The October food drive for the Neighborhood Center
o f South Morrow County brought in 1504 pounds o f canned
and dry goods. This year's drive was in a contest form among
the various businesses in Heppner.
“ Last year’s door-to-door food drive brought in 2345
Vi pounds o f food,” said Janice Skaggs, Neighborhood Center
C oordinator. This year the C enter did not receive quite as
much food, but the business participants enjoyed the friendly
contest.
First place w inner for the contest w as H eppner
Hardware. This group o f four employees brought in 393 pounds
o f food for total o f 167 points. Second place w inner w as John's
Place with 115 points and third place was Peterson's w ith 72
points.
