By Molly Rhea,
Dir. of Pioneer Memorial Home Health and Hospice
To raise aw areness about chronic, acute, and cancer
pain, and their effect on our econom y, social structure,
individuals and their fam ilies, the A m erican C hronic Pain
A ssociation (ACPA) has designated Septem ber as National
Pain Awareness Month.
Not so long ago medical professionals were reluctant
to even ask a patient about their pain for fear o f “ suggesting”
the pain by the m ere m ention o f it, or thinking that w e m ay
increase the pain by focusing the p a tie n t’s attention on it.
Thankfully these myths are being beaten back and pain levels
are more routinely addressed.
In the United States pain is the num ber one cause o f
adult disability, and affects one-third o f our population, or about
50 million people, making pain a major health issue. Obviously
these kinds o f numbers also make pain a major economic issue.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health cites
pain costs o f $ 100 billion in annual medical expenses, lost work
tim e and other benefit costs.
Accompanying the health and economic issues are the
social problems. Long-term pain that is not manages m ay leave
people unable to care for children, hold jobs, or stay involved
in social relationships.
There are two categories o f pain, acute and chronic.
A cute pain m ay be m ild and m om entary, or severe and long
lasting. It has a known cause and a definite beginning and end.
It generally starts suddenly and triggers physical reactions such
as sw eating or elevated blood pressure, and resolves w hen
pain m edication is given or the injury is treated. T he m ost
common occurrence is lower back pain, which is the fifth most
com m on cause o f doctor visits.
Chronic pain lingers beyond the usual recovery period
for an illness or injury. It’s often intractable, with causes that
can be neither rem oved nor treated. Chronic pain can by very
stressful for body and spirit and requires ongoing careful
attention for successful treatment. The m ost com m on causes
o f chronic pain are arthritis, cancer, low er back problem s,
shingles, headaches and fibromyalgia.
So, you ask, w hat is the point o f all this inform ation
about pain? To increase awareness, but also to encourage each
o f you to inform your health care providers about pain you
m ay be experiencing. Pain is not ju st an inconvenience or a
nuisance. Just as poorly m anaged pain affects the rate o f
recovery for surgical patients, untreated pain can create further
problems detrimental to your health and well-being.
