Off The Wall
St. Patrick’s Senior Center news
Mertyn Robinson
This year the Morrow County Road Department made
major improvements to the road linking lone to North Morrow
County w ithout trespassing on too m uch sacred territory o f
those Washington Ground Squirrels. Either those endangered
creatures or their protectors lacked press coverage or the
squirrels carefully refrained from crossing that road and having
to be resuscitated.
Then there w ere press accolades concerning road
department developm ents in the establishment o f an off-road
vehicle funland where people could crash and bum while having
a roaring-good time. Now bike and four-w heeler riders can
get their kicks while trying to stay upright over m ajor humps.
It’s sure to generate business for local m edical services.
M eanwhile young skateboarders need a place where they too
can fly through the air.
Back to roads, 1 can certainly understand the need for
speed bum ps in som e places around public institutions.
H ow ever the speed bum ps that really shake up o n e ’s inner
clockworks are the craters in some o f our m ajor county roads
that are progressively getting worse. Perhaps there is a shortage
o f patching material brought on by increasing petroleum costs.
Or maybe a road department employee m elted down into one
o f these craters during those hot days and they haven’t been
able to get him unstuck.
Local rural residents are accustomed to slowing down
for road hazards to reduce the w ear on a v e h ic le ’s shock
absorbers or to prevent passengers from head concussions
w hen they are not w earing helm ets. M ost people here also
take for granted that deer ultimately have the right o f way even
when these creatures wait until the last moment before bounding
into the path o f an oncoming vehicle.
But we could lose some unsuspecting motorist totally
unfamiliar with the hazards o f our roadways. Or if they recover,
those m otorists m ight sue for negligence. A nd the county
couldn’t claim the road conditions were an act o f nature such
as earthquakes or excessive m oisture. For the last several
years, even the spiders have needed to carry canteens.
“ H ello,” it’s Septem ber already. So it m ight seem
appropriate that if the county roads can’t be repaired, perhaps
there should be signs put up such as “Rough roads, travel at
your ow n risk.” Yes, I rem em ber long ago w hen the county
dirt roads were nearly impassable during winters, but isn’t some
o f our tax m oney supposed to support road m aintenance?
A nother thing that has m e puzzled is the size o f the
backpacks on some school children now that school is again
underway. 1 question that the backpack contents are m erely
books and hom ework. If they are musically inclined perhaps
they are carrying a bassoon. Or they might be carrying enough
material to construct a “shelter in place” and also have enough
provisions for a lengthy stay w ith their battery-pow ered
entertainm ent center. That m akes as m uch sense as watching
our forests and natural resources bum for lack o f proper
management.
O n Friday, Sept. 12, at 8:15 a m., the bus will leave
the M ain St. entrance o f St. P at’s Senior C enter for the
W estward Ho Parade in Pendleton.
Hope, Valby and All Saints m em bers are volunteers
for W ednesday, Sept. 17. The m enu for the day is R ueben
sandw iches on rye bread with cheese and sauerkraut, potato
salad, pears and cottage cheese and layered pudding.
Legal Assistance is one o f the services offered by the
Umatilla-Morrow Area Agency on Aging. Hie service includes
legal advice, counseling, and representation by an attorney,
am ong other m ore specific aids, up to one hour o f time. This
service has not been offered locally, though it has been available
in Pendleton. We are pursuing the possibility o f having
information sessions and workshops once or periodically if an
interest in, and questions arise, regarding seniors and the legal
system . There will be opportunities to offer suggestions and
m ake requests over the next few weeks as a plan o f action is
put together.
A nnouncem ents are m ade at the congregated meal;
so listen, read, think, share, let you needs and opinions be
known. O ur desire is for useful inform ation to be given in a
helpful and clear manner. Keep tuned.
