D ivision. “Im agine seein g a
child in the street unconscious
and bleeding in front o f your
car. You d on ’t want that to
happen.”
The best way to avoid
such a tragedy is simple: Slow
dow n and be alert. O bey the
posted speed in school zones
w henever children might be
p r e s e n t. E x tr a c u r r ic u la r
activities mean that children
w ill be traveling in school
zones from early morning to
w ell into the evening hours.
“T h is is not about
avoiding a ticket. This is about
avoiding a tragedy. A s drivers,
w e need to remember that we
are the adults d rivin g the
3,000-pound steel machines.
We are responsible,” Waring
said. “The vulnerable ones are
the ch ild ren w h o are not
protected by a v eh icle and
who often cannot understand
complex traffic situations.”
Motorists also should
expect children to occasionally
w alk or pedal into unsafe
areas.
