in 1995 from Pacific University in Forest Grove and in 1999
from the University o f Idaho in Moscow. He is a teacher.
The couple will be m arried Sept. 2 0 ,2 0 0 3 , at Eola
Hills Wine Cellars in Rickreall, OR.
Chamber Chatter

The other night, while we were sharing the magnitude
o f the sky w ith friends, a lone car quietly parked close by. A
voice said, “ You had the sam e idea.” Turned out that he had
blindfolded his family, put them in the car, and driven them 50
miles for a viewing adventure and a guessing game o f “where
are we now ?” As we departed, after looking at Mars and the
Milky Way at length, the family was still there, making memories
to last forever.
Then, there w as the w om an w ho had lived in New
York City for some 20 years and had never seen the Big Dipper
until the recent blackout. Can you im agine not being able to
see the stars? If you haven’t taken the time to share them with
your children and grandchildren, or your spouse or friends, or
experienced them on your own, then now is the time. It’s very
simple and inexpensive. Just throw in a blanket or folding chairs
and drive to the top o f a hill w ith off-highw ay parking; then
lean back and enjoy the overw helm ing spectacle overhead.
(Oh, and you might also take along some blankets, binoculars,
and som ething w arm to drink.) You w o n ’t be sorry. You see
the world and yourself a little differently when you go home.
The skies above are so taken for granted by those o f
us with lim ited city lights. It’s one o f the great things about
M orrow County; the stars go on forever. I was told that was
one o f the reasons people like to cam p at Willow Creek Lake
when they go to fish. However, sadly, the lake is down so far
that people are choosing to go elsew here for boating and
fishing. Being an ag-oriented community, there is no question
that farmers need water, but we also need visitors to continue
to enjoy our outdoor am enities. They help our econom y and
keep our Main Street viable. Hopefully, the drought will end
or there can be a balance reached with the Corps o f Engineers
and irrigators for recreation use. It’s all about working together.
The Cham ber will be having a program to better understand
this issue.
Next week all entities report. Remember, the Heppner
Chamber o f Commerce is continually working for you to make
your com m unity the best it can be. Did you read the quote
from the cow boy w ho participated in the O regon Trail Pro-
Rodeo? It was something to the effect that he had been to a lot
o f small towns, but never to Heppner, and “ it was the coolest
ever." It’s the residents who m ake that happen.
