Shriners East-West Game preparations finalized
Junior Golf draws 30 students
Thirty students participated in the Jr. Golf program held at the Willow Creek County Club. The

5151 annual Shrine East- West
Football game were finalized
in LaGrande on Saturday, July
19, when the committee ironed
out the remaining details o f the
g am e. T he a s s o c ia tio n is
represented by tw enty-eight
s h rin e c lu b s th r o u g h o u t
O reg o n and c o m p o se d o f
eighteen committee heads and
directors. Approximately 150
high schools participate in this
a c tiv ity , p r o d u c in g 120
graduate seniors for the August
game. Each team will consist
o f a 30-man player squad and
a 30-m an altern ate squad,
each o f which is comprised o f
14 from the 3 A schools, 12
from 2 A schools and four from
1A schools.

rotation and 1A leagues on a
tw o - y e a r r o ta tio n . R o b

Team. A ssisting him will be
Monte Nash, o f John Day, and

Pow der. For the West Team,
the H ead Coach will be Kurt
Hargett, ofNewport. Assisting
him will be Jim Keizur, o f
Springfield, and Dan Dugan,
o f Keizer. The game officials
and the coaching staff donate
th e ir tim e and talents and
receive no gratuities for their
efforts.
The Shrine East-West
Football game is celebrating its
5 1 “ y ear and has b ecom e
known as “The Greatest Little
Football Gam e in the World.”
This event is the result o f the
foresight o f a notable shrine/
m ason w ho saw a w orld o f
untapped talent in the 1 A, 2 A
and 3 A schools. The game was
staged in Pendleton for 20
y e a r s a n d to o k up a
permanent residence in Baker
City in 1972. During that time
fra m e th e E a st-W est h as
produced countless dollars for
th e S hrine H ospitals. T he
S h rin e o f N o rth A m e ric a
o p e ra te s 22 h o s p ita ls in
Canada, the United States and
M exico and is the w o rld ’s
largest philanthropy. Local
units pledge their support to
th e P o rtla n d U n it w h ic h
accepts and treats children
w ith routine and co m p lex
o r th o p e d ic
p r o b le m s ,
neurom uscular diseases and
bum reconstructive surgery.
The only departm ent that a
Shrine hospital does not have
is a Billing Department.
G am e w eek will be
filled w ith activities for young
and old alike. Friday, Aug. 8,
includes a g o lf tournam ent, a
sh o tg u n start, a sh o p p in g
spree for the ladies, and a
family picnic at Riverside Park
in LaGrande at 5 p.m.

starts out with the B reakfast
in the Park sponsored by the
Cattlemen and Cattlewom ens
Association. The breakfast is
follow ed by the traditional
parade through dow ntow n
B a k e r C ity . T h e G a m e
O fficials banquet will be at
4 :3 0 p .m ., a n d p re -g a m e
festivities begin at 6 p.m. The
