beautiful landscape picture
was recently donated to the
lone Legion Post for display
in the Legion Hall in lone. The
plaque displayed on the picture
frame honors Walter Eubanks,
H ow ard and Ann Eubanks,
a n d w a s d o n a te d by
g r a n d d a u g h te r /d a u g h te r ,
M arlene E ubanks Pointer.
Local artist, and friend o f the
fam ily , T onya H e id e m a n
painted the picture.
W alter Eubanks was
ju st a very young m an when
the Legion Hall was built back
in the early 1900s. The family
story is that he loved to skate
and the hall was to be opened
for roller-skating when finished.
Young Walt w ould eagerly
w atch the building progress
and offer to help if they would
let him. W hen it w as finally
finished, he was there every
day to ro lle r sk ate on its
beautiful hardwood floors and
enjoy the many other activities
centered there.
Howard Eubanks was
a V eteran o f W orld W ar I
serving in the Pacific as a
M erchant M arine after being
conscripted into the Navy.
A fte r th e w a r e n d e d , he
becam e an active m em ber o f
the lone Legion Post. He was
the oldest m em ber just before
his death in Septem ber 2001.
The lone Legion has
been used for m any purposes
over the years, H ow ard and

floor began w hen 1 w as only
about 2 years old. M y father
w ould take m e o ff the top o f
the coat pile w here 1 w as
p e r c h e d , w a tc h in g th e
festivities and we would dance
w ith the rest o f the crow d to
liv e b a n d m u sic . L a te r I
a tte n d e d d a n c e s , te a s ,
receptions, dinners, prom s,
m eetings and m ost recently
school lunches in the Legion
H all. Each tim e, I relived
memories as 1 walked into and
enjoyed the building,” recalls
Marlene Pointer.
The donated picture
had hung for 13 years in the
O ld lo n e S chool b u ild in g
slated to be destroyed on July
22, 2003. The im age is o f a
peaceful pasture scene with a
red bam, a fitting memonal for
this local fam ily and farm -
centered community.

hour shifts, keep the cen ter’s
office open five days a week,
9 a.m .-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m .,
M o n d a y th ro u g h F rid a y .
Som e have volunteered for
tw o sh ifts and som e have
back-up people w ho fill in.
The Board o f D irectors has
evaluated the phone calls and
inquires com ing through the
office. B eginning Oct. 1, the
office hours will be cut by one
three-hour shift. The change
will have the office open h alf
days on Fridays, from 9 a.m.-
12 p.m. The H eppner C enter
is the only one in the two-
c o u n ty re g io n w h ic h h as
maintained a five-day-a-week
office schedule.
The m enu for July 30
is meat loaf, m ashed potatoes
and gravy, spinach, peaches,
com bread and birthday cake.
The United M ethodist church
will provide volunteers for the
meal service.
The C enter has also
received som e new boxes o f
b o o k s . T h e y a re f re e ly
available to any one. Most are
paperbacks.

The Heppner Chamber of Commerce recently received
an award for being an “Enduring Community Builder”
from SOLV (Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism). The
award was received by (L-R): Darrell Ravel, president
of the Heppner Chamber; John Edmundson, coordinator
of Heppner's Adopt-A-Highway Litter prevention
program; and Chuck Bailey, member of the City
Beautification Commission and president of the Heppner
Garden Club.
