He w as raised and attended school at Gooseberry a n d la te r a tte n d e d a n d grad u ated from lone High School. He attended Pacific University in Forest Grove for a short time before joining the military. He served in the Army during W orld War II. On Dec. 11,1959, he entered the m ilitary serving with the Air Force. Following his honorable discharge in D ecem ber 1965, he returned to Roseburg and later m oved to Puyallup, WA. O n Sept. 24, 1993, h e m a r r ie d M a rjo rie J. C ulbertson at Reno, NV. A fter his retirem ent tw o years ago, the couple m oved to Heppner. Nora L. “Nome” Pointer N o ra L. “ N o n ie ” P o in te r, 83, o f H e p p n e r, form erly o f L exington and Pendleton, died Thursday, July 17, 2 0 0 3 , a t P io n e e r M em orial N ursing H om e in Heppner. A funeral mass will be held Friday, July 25, at 11 a.m., at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Heppner. Burial will follow at H eppner M asonic Cemetery. Pointer was bom Jan. 1, 1920, to C or and M ary D oherty M cL aughlin, at the M cLaughlin R anch in Dixie C anyon b etw een H eppner and Pilot Rock. On A pril 24, 1940, she m arried Don Pointer at Heppner. The couple raised their family and farmed on the P o in te r R a n c h n o r th o f Lexington. A fter retiring in 1977, the couple m oved to Pendleton. Mr. Pointer died la te r th a t y e a r a n d M rs. Pointer continued to live at Pendleton until ] 990 when she m oved to B eaverton to live with her daughter, Louise. She has been a resident o f Pioneer M em orial N ursing H om e in H eppner since 1995. She w as said to be well know n for her cooking. She took great pride in her immediate and extended family and in her Irish heritage. It was s a id sh e w o u ld be remembered for her deep love for her children and for her kindness and compassion. Swanson plans on w orking at Hair Expressions th ro u g h the sum m er, then returning to college. She plans o n a tte n d in g M t. H o o d C o m m u n ity C o lle g e in Gresham, majoring in Science. She hopes to become at dental hygienist. Football camp to be held A football cam p will be held Aug. 4-7, from 5- 8:30 p.m . Marlene Pointer retires after 20-plus years M arlene Pointer, 57, o f lone, retired this year from her teaching position at lone Elementary School. She taught in lone for 23 years, starting with the kindergarten kids and finishing with the fifth graders. B efore tea c h in g in lone. Pointer taught sixth grade for two years in Bend. In lone, Pointer taught kindergarten half time for her first nine years, w hile also teach in g fill-in classes in H om e Econom ics and art. Then, she w ent into teaching fifth grade full time, and taught for 14 years in that capacity. Pointer said one o f the great things about teaching both grades, w as teaching a child in fifth grade that she had taught in kindergarten. She enjoyed seeing the progress they had made and how much they had growri. Now that Pointer has retired she will have more time to pursue her painting She has painted many signs and trucks a ro u n d lo n e a n d th e surrounding areas. She and her hushand, Tom, also enjoy living on the fam ily farm , that will have the great honor o f being 100 years old next year. Pointer w as bom in Pendleton and lived in lone until she was 2-years-old and then moved with the family to Arlington where she graduated from high school. She later returned to lone w ith h e r husband and began teaching at l o n e Schools. P o i n te r ’s parents and m any aunts and Marlene Pointer uncles went to lone School and were t a u g h t in t he ol d sc h o o l building. She is very sad to see the old school building go, a bui l di ng t hat h o ld s m a n y memories, not just for her, but the whole town. Pointer also has tw o c h i l d r e n , a d a u g h t e r in A r l i n g t o n a n d a s o n in Hermiston, as well as a seventh grade grandson who lives with them .
