2003 season sees McElligott Mustangs
HHS qualifies six for State 2A track meet

During the 2003 track
record, 13-year-old H eppner
Jr. High eighth grader, Brendan
M cE lligott has broken tw o
school records, one in the
800m and one in the 1500m ,
and rebroke his 800m record.
The first record was
b ro k en on A pril 11, w hen
M cE lligott broke the 800m
re c o rd o f 2 :1 9 .7 8 , set by
Bryan Padberg, by running it
in 2:18.70. M cE lligott then
broke the new record at the
championship track meet held
M ay 9, by running the 800m
in 2:16.95.
On May 2, McElligott
b ro k e th e 1994 re c o rd o f
5:53.27, set by Tim Dickenson
in the 1500m, by running it in
5:51.96.
A ccording to Susan
H isler, th e Jr. H igh tra c k
coach, the previous records
had been long established and
one other record still standing
is about 20 years old. She also
inform ed that Padberg now
runs in collegiate track and has
also been a strong competitor.
“Brendan has a strong
work ethic in track. He is a real
team player,” stated Hisler.

McElligott said he just
decided to go out for track
a n d fro m th e r e s ta r te d
practicing and really getting
into it. He now tries to run at
least a m ile a day w hen there
is not track practice.
M cE lligott plans on
staying w ith track in high
school and also enjoys playing
basketball. McElligott says his
drive for doing so well in track
c o m e s fro m “ b e in g a
competitive person.”

final day for sign-ups and
paym ent o f $65 for tw o days.

for stops around east side o f
Portland and in the Eugene

Conference and 19-3 overall.
T hey w ill play for the CBC
cham pionship on Saturday,
M ay 24 at noon in Pendleton
against Sherman County.
The M ustangs scored
a single run in the second when
Donald Adam s walked, Kyler
Lovgren doubled and Jode
Coil had a RBI single. They
broke the gam e open in the
third w hen Josh W inters and
B rad A dam s singled, K ory
P aullus sacrificed them to
second and third and reached
on an error. Billy Gates drove
tw o h o m e w ith a d o u b le,
D o n ald A d am s w a lk e d to
load the bases and Lovgren
doubled to em pty them and
m ake it 6-0.
In the fourth, Winters
singled and scored on Brad
A dam s’ double to m ake it 7-
0 and the M ustangs ended it

Ruth golf
tournament to be
held
T he W illow C reek
County Club will be holding
the H eppner Babe Ruth G o lf
Tournament, Sunday, M ay 25.
The event will start at 8 a.m.
P ro c ee d s w ill go to w a rd s
equipment, uniforms and field
upkeep.
T h e r e is a $25
registration fee, which includes
lunch. There will be a caddy
auction, 50-50 tickets and
M uligans. The winning team
will be aw arded jackets.

w eekend, M ay 23 and 24.
The girls 400m relay
team o f Jessica W ainwright,
Blair Keithley, Terra W ilson
and C ara K ennedy placed
second w ith a tim e o f 55.44,
their fastest o f the season, to
earn the state meet berth.
Qualifying in individual
events were Brooke Rust in the
1500m and Justin Botefuhr in
the b o y s’ triple jum p. Both
w ere second place finishers.
Rust ran 5:39.34, a season’s
best and Botefuhr jum ped 37
feet lO'A inches, a personal
record.

The

M ustang baseball team beat

T ig ersco ts 9-2 in the first
game, but the Tigerscots came
back to take the second game
2-1 in C o lu m b ia B a s in
C o n f e r e n c e p la y . T h e
M ustangs are now 10-1 in the
CBC and 20-4 overall and
clinched first place in the East
Division a week ago.
T he M ustangs will
face Sherman County at noon
in P en d leto n for the CBC
cham pionship and the first
seed in the state playoffs. The
loser w ill play the w inner o f
Stanfield and Condon for the
second seed in the playoffs.
T h e M u s ta n g s sw e p t the
Huskies 8-2 and 2-1 on April
11 in M oro.
The Tigerscots scored
two runs in the top o f the first,
in the first gam e, but the
M ustangs cam e back w ith a
run in the bottom h a lf when
Brad A dam s walked, went to
s e c o n d as K o ry P a u llu s
re a c h e d on an e rro r an d
scored on a Billy Gates single.
The M ustangs added
a run to tie the game up in the
second when Chuy Elguezabal
doubled and scored on Josh

Heppner tracksters with a fifth
place showing in the long jump.
Her season’s best was 14 feet
4 ‘/2 inches.
Geer also competed in
the discus and shot put, making
the finals at district in the
discus. His season bests were
104 feet and 34 feet 7 inches.

illness, but during the season
participated on relay team s,
the 400m and discus.
At the state meet this
w eekend, H ep p n e r’s relay
team will run on Friday, with
Rust and B otefuhr slated to
compete on Saturday.

Jep sen also placed
third in the 1500m and fifth in
the 3000m . He has season’s
bests o f 4:24.6 for the 1500m
and a 10:02.3 for the 3000m.
Lem mon also placed
fifth in the 800m at district and
threw the javelin. His season’s
best 800m tim e was 2:13.3.
K eithley has a great
district meet. In addition to the
relay effort, she placed fifth in
the 100m dash with a time o f
14.38 and fifth in the shot put
w ith 29 feet 2 ‘/2 inches and
w as sixth in the discus at 85
feet 1 inch. All were personal
records.
Kennedy also placed
in the 100m w ith a 14.01
fourth place finish and fifth in
the 100m high hu rd les at
18.71. Both w ere personal
records.
