Cardinal teams take third in
Morrow County Invite
The Cardinal boys’
and girls’ track teams traveled
to Boardman to participate in
the
M orrow
C ounty
Invitational Track Meet on
May 2. Both teams finished in
third place.
The Cardinal boys
were led by Andrew Rietmann.
Rietmann finished first in the
200m dash with a time o f
22.83. He also finished first in
the 400m Dash with a time of
53.37, and second in the
200m Dash with a time o f
11.26.
Mike Radie finished
fourth in the 100m dash with a
tim e o f 11.6. Radie also
finished fifth in the 200m dash
with a time o f 23.63. Kelly
Thompson finished third in the
400m dash with a time o f
53.98. Dan Satterly finished
eighth in the triple jump with a
jump o f 32 feet 1 inch.
Cayle Krebs finished
fifth in the discus with a throw
of 111 feet 4 inches and fourth
in the shot put with a throw' o f
41 feet 4 inches.
The 4x100m relay

Rietmann finished second with

a time o f 46.27. The 1600m
relay team of Christman, Tyler
Brown, Radie and Thompson
finished sixth with a time 3:47.

the girls’ team with a first place
finish in the 200m dash with a
tim e o f 26.54. D iana
McElligott also placed first in
the 400m with a time o f 1:00
and second in the 100m dash
with a time of 12.72.
Natalie M cElligott
finished second in the long
jump with a jump of 14 feet 3
inches. She also finished fourth
in the triple jump with a jump
o f 32 feet 1 inch and fifth in
the high jump w ith a jump of 4
feet 6 inches.
Eva Chitty finished
sixth in the 400m with a time
of 1:06. Ashley Grams finished
fifth in the 300m hurdles with
a time o f 52.72. Kim Morris
finished eighth in the high jump
with a jump of 4 feet 2 inches.

The lone Cardinal
track team s tra v e led to
Pendleton on April 29, to
compete in the Pendleton JV
track meet.
The Lady Cardinals
finished first with 71 points.
Diana McElligott finished first
in three events, taking the
100m dash with a time o f
12.99. She also won the 200m
dash with a time o f26.62 and
the 400m with a time of 1:00.
Ashley Grams finished first in
the 300m hurdles with a time
o f 53.91; she also placed third
in the 100m hurdles w ith a time
o f 19.53. Eva Chitty finished
third in the 400m with a time
o f 1:05 and finished fourth in
the long jump with a jump of
13 feet 11 inches. Missy
Baker placed sixth in the shot
put with a throw o f 29 feet 1
inch.
The 4x100m relay
team of Chitty, Grams, Sarah
Peck and McElligott finished
first with a time of 54:38. The
1600m relay team o f Chitty,
Peck, Kim Morris and Grams
finished fourth with a time of
4:52.
For the C ard in al
boys, Andrew Rietmann had
first place finishes in the 100m
dash with a time of 11.30 and
the 200m dash with a time of
23.42. Rietmann also placed
second in the 400m with a time
o f53.64. Mike Radie finished
second in the 100m dash with
a time of 11.75 and second in
the 200m dash with a time of
23.81. Cayle Krebs finished
fifth in the discus with a throw
of 114 feet 2 inches and fourth
in the shot put with a throw of
42 feet 2 inches. N ick
Christman finished third in the
high jump with a jump of 5 feet
6 inches.
The 4x100m relay
team o f Radie, Christman,
Krebs and Rietmann finished
first with a time o f45.95. The
1600m relay team o f
Christman, Tyler Brown, Billy
Ross and Radie finished in fifth
with a time of 3:57.
Mustangs make short work of Vikings

The
H ep p n er
Mustang baseball team made
short work o f the visiting
Umatilla Vikings, beating them
13-0 and 14-0 with both
games being cut short to five
innings due to the 10-run rule
on Saturday, May 3. The
Mustangs won their 13th game
in a row and improved to 6-0
in the C o lu m b ia B asin
Conference and 15-3 overall.
The team has an important
double header at Stanfield on
Saturday, May 10, beginning
at 11 a.m.
The Mustangsjumped
out early in the first game when
Chuy Elguezabal and Josh
Winters walked and Billy
Gates hit a home run to make
it 3-0.
In the second, Josh
Gutierrez reached on an error,
moved to third on a Jode Coil
single and scored on an
Elguezabal single to make it 4-
0 .
They broke it open in
the third when Brad Adams
walked, Kory Paullus reached
on an infield single, Gates
singled to load the bases,
Donald Adams had an RBI
single, Gutierrez followed with
an RBI single. Coil scored two
w ith a single and Elguezabal
grounded out to score another
run to make it 9-0.
The Mustangs put the
game away in the fourth when,
with two out, Gates was hit by
a pitch. D onald A dam s
doubled, Kyler Lovgren had
an RBI single, G utierrez
walked. Coil had an RBI
single, Elguezabal walked and
Winters walked to force in the
13,h run.
Brad Adams pitched
a complete game for the win,
scattering five hits, while
striking out seven and walking
two.
Coil went three for
three with three RBI. Gates
went two for two with three
RBI and scored three runs.
Donald Adams went two for
th ree and sco red tw ice.
Gutierrez scored three times.
The Mustangs took
little time in taking control of
the second game as Winters
hit a one-out homerun in the
bottom o f the first. This was
followed by a Brad Adams
double, a Luke Murray single
and a Gates three-run homerun
to make it 4-0.
In the third, Gates
doubled, Donald Adams had
a RBI single and came home
on a triple by Coil. Elguezabal
had a RBI single, Winters
reached on an error, Brad
Adams had a RBI double and
Murray reached on an error
to score another run and make
it 9-0.
They came back with
five more in the fourth when
Ben Turrell and Gutierrez
singled, Elguezabal walked.
Winters walked to force home
a run and Brad Adams hit a
grand slam to make it 14-0.
Donald Adams made
sure it was more than enough
going all five innings striking
out eight while allowing just
two hits.
Brad Adams went
three for four with two doubles
and a homerun, five RBI and
scored two runs. Gates went
two for three with a double,
hom erun, three RBI and
scored twice. Winters scored
three runs and had two RBI
and Elguezabal scored twice.

Crazy” Horse and Pony Club
and M orrow County 4-H
sponsored a driving event at
the home o f club member
Kristy Crowell on April 27.
Five driving teams
participated in several different
contests. They were: Driver
Mim Myron and passenger
Kim Findley; driver Karen
Temple and passengers Tegan
and Brick Sager; driver Kristal
Temple and passenger Darby
Sager; d riv er S herron
W oodside and passenger
Tonya Heideman; and driver
Kristy Crowell and passenger
Brenna Rietmann. About 15
spectators were present to
enjoy the day.
The first game was a
scavenger hunt. The fastest
time turned in was by Crowell
and Rietmann, and second
fastest by W oodside and
Heideman. Karen Temple
won the prize for identifying a
quote from “Stopping by the
Woods On a Snowy Evening”
by Robert Frost.
The next event was an
obstacle course. Best time was
turned in by Mim Myron;
second, Kristy Crowell; third,
S herron W oodside; and
fourth, Kristal Temple.
Karen Temple was
voted the “Extra Effort” award
by everyone present and given
a big cheer.
Green Feed and Seed
and Temple Veterinary Clinic
donated prizes.
The next event will be
held in Lexington or Heppner.

Heppner Junior High track attends
Pendleton meet
The Pendleton track
meet was recently held at
Sunridge Middle School in
Pendleton. Schools participat­
ing were Pendleton, Columbia,
Stanfield, lone, Heppner, He­
lix, Athena-Weston, Umatilla,
Echo and Pilot Rock. For
Heppner, only the seventh
graders com peted as the
eighth graders went to Port­
land for the Centennial Ex­
change Program. Results are
as follows:
Megan Orr - fourth,
shot put 26’3"; first, discus
64’2"; fourth, high jump; fifth,
4x 100 relay;
Kylie Doherty - sec­
ond, high jump; sixth, 100m
hurdles; fifth, 100m relay;
Baillie Keithley - fifth,

eral eighth graders competed
at the Centennial meet against
Reynolds Junior High School,
also in Portland. Results are as

Brendan McElligott set a new
Heppner Junior High school
record in the 1500m run with
a time o f 4:51.96 at a meet
hosted by lone and Heppner
teams on May 2 at Sunridge
Middle School. McElligott,
competing in only his second
1500m this season, broke the
old meet record o f4:53.27 set
by Tim Dickenson in 1994.
Additionally, in a meet held a
few weeks ago, McElligott set
a new 800m record of 2:18.70
to replace Bryan Padberg’s
record of 2:19.78. McElligott
also set a personal best of 33'
in the triple jump for second
place in Pendleton.
