Local singing group, “The S en tim en talists”, entertained at the assisted living facilities in Madras and Prineville over the weekend. On Friday evening, the group performed at the Aspen Court assisted living facility in M adras. On Saturday morning, the group sang at the Carriage House assisted living facility in Prineville. Before returning to H eppner on Saturday, they also sang at the funeral of a member’s relative. The group, formed in 1997, practice once a week and love to sing the “oldies”. Members are Molly Day, Cara Osmin, Doris Brosnan, Darlene Marquardt, Janet G reenup, Cam W ishart, N orm a French, Lynnea Sargent, Bonnarae Miller, Gayle Arbogast and Luvilla Sonstegard. A wedding reception for Toni Cutsforth and Jacob Kavaya has been planned for Saturday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the Heppner Elks Club. Everyone is invited to attend. The couple is to be married on April 19 at Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii. Toni is the daughter of Mark and Terrie Cutsforth, Heppner. She graduated from Heppner High School in 1994, and received a degree in interior architecture from She is employed as a project m anager w ith B auhaus Interiors Group at Dallas, Texas. Jacob is the son of Michele Harris, Highlandville, MO. He graduated from Alta Loma High School in Alta Loma, CA, in 1994, and received a degree in finance from Oregon State University. Legion and Legion Auxiliary hosted an 84th birthday party for the Legion at the Office Tavern on March 18 with 52 members attending. Dave Long, guest speaker from Pendleton, gave a presentation on the Pendleton Air Museum and invited everyone to the Doolittle Raiders Memorial Air Show and the “Bombs Away!” Big Band Ball on May 17. M embership year pins were presented to 10 m em bers. Irene H oltz, auxiliary president, presented gifts to Jean Jepsen and June Crowell for their extra work the past year. The Auxiliary hosted a Girls State Tea for sophomore and junior girls and their mothers on March 30. Girls State Chairman Jean Jepsen explained about Girls State and what is expected of a delegate. Diana McElligott, last year’s delegate, spoke of her experience and urged the ju n io r girls to apply. m eeting that the school drinking fountain needing to be removed from the hallway was not moved over spring break due to unforeseen circum stances. It will be moved within the next week, possibly to the high school hallway. The club is considering constructing a pole building for storage rather than buying a storage container. Dennis Stefani will report back with estimates. Becky Tullis has been working on the tax exempt status. The new bi-laws were approved by club members. They also approved paying the tax exempt fee of up to $500. It was announced it is the school . b oard ’s responsibility to make sure the lights for the tennis courts are put up. The district is also checking into cleaning up the construction site between the courts and the track practice area. The fire department has okayed using electricity for a new com munity reader board by the post office. Dean Robinson reported they are still checking on prices for the board. D arlene M arquardt and M onica Swanson on the scholarship committee. The club is looking for someone to head the fund raiser summer raft trip on the Deschutes River. Barb C ollins is organizing elementary parents to help serve dinner on Friday, May 2, to the bicycle racers. The money will be used to purchase new playground equipment. Anyone who can help should contact Collins at school at 422-7131 or home at 422-7539. The school classes have been asked to design Fourth of July shirts for this year’s celebration. Shilo Svetich is collecting submissions which are due by Thursday, May 1. Past years’ shirts are available to the Fourth of July committee for publicity at no cost. A letter from Hildegarde Piersol was read stating that lone Auxiliary is the only unit in District 6 to make their membership goal at this tim e. She presented lighthouse pins to President Irene Holtz and membership chairman June Crowell to honor us that our goal had been met. The Auxiliary is purchasing blue star banners for each home that has a son serving in the military. These w ill-be presented at the Memorial Day service. A grant application has been sent to Wildhorse Casino. Funds would be used to further update the hall. Recipients of the grant will be notified in August. Auxiliary hosted a salad luncheon for the lone teachers on April 4 to thank them for their service and dedication to our children. Students to attend writing festival Charlene Houweling and The Morrow County School District will be sending 22 students to the annual Oregon Writing Festival to be held on Saturday, April 26, at Portland State University in Portland. The OWF is sponsored by the Oregon C ouncil o f Teachers o f English, who anticipate that more than 1000 students from all over the state will attend the d a y ’s activities. Students made a collection of work from various content areas, explained why they chose the particular piece and put a portfolio together to be bound and kept as a treasure 4 p.m. on weekdays. On Wednesday, April 23, the menu for the St. Patrick’s noon meal is baked chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad bar, fruit, hot biscuits and pineapple upside down cake. Don’t forget that the meal begins at 11:30 a.m. with the flag salute, table blessing and announcements and then the serving begins. Those who arrive early are invited to take their place setting and beverage to their seats and visit until the appointed time of serving.
