K U M A will again be broadcasting live from upstairs
U.S. C ongressm an G reg W alden (R -O R ) w ill visit
H eppner on Saturday, M arch 15. His public schedule for the
day follows:
C ongressm an W alden w ill p articipate in the St.
Patrick’s Day K U M A Coffee H our at the H eppner Elks Club
on M ain Street from 10-11:30 a.m . W alden w ill have the
opportunity to meet individually with local residents and answer
questions about local, state and national issues.
Congressm an Walden will then attend the St. Patrick's
Day lunch at the St. Patrick’s Senior C enter from 11:45 a.m .-
12:45 p.m. Again he will meet with local residents and answer
questions about local, state and national issues.

Congressional District o f Oregon, which includes 20 counties
in southern, central and eastern O regon. He is a m em ber o f
the H ouse C om m ittee on E nergy and C om m erce as w ell as

Wee Bit O’ Ireland - Ceili
Looking for the true spirit o f the St. Patrick’s weekend?
Attend the Ceili. Just hop on the new elevator at the Elks after
the Great Green Parade this Saturday for an afternoon o f Irish
song and dance. The C eili is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
Michael Duffy o f the Irish Singers will be announcing
the event, which will include rollicking Irish tunes by the likes
o ’ John Doherty and the Irish Singers - Dan Emert, Alan Feves,
Paul G reen, Scott Sager and M ichael Duffy. It’s tradition to
have these guys entertain. Some have been com ing to Heppner
since Jim Farley’s first celebration 21 years ago.
In addition, M ike K eow n, form erly o f Heppner, and
Steve Pyle from Athena will perform on the bagpipes. “Mulligan
Stew ” , the sm aller fiddlers, and “The Shenanigans” will be
treating the audience to a variety o f fiddle tunes. Incidentally,
these groups w ere very p opular at the K iw anis K apers,
bringing home the gold, with both getting firsts.
Joining the young fiddlers w ill be T he B aile G las
D ancers from the T ri-C ities. T his year tw o o f the m ore
experienced girls will be dancing. They bring energy, style and
grace to Irish dancing in the Northwest. “B aile” m eans town
and “ G las” m eans green. T he dance d irector is M aggie
C orrigan, w hose grandparents im m igrated from C ounty
Donegal, Ireland in 1928. She has kept the Irish dance tradition
as she teaches from Seattle to Tri-Cities.
T here is no charge for the C eili, but guests are
encouraged to purchase the collector buttons at the information
booth.
Shamrock Lanes to host tournament
Shamrock Lanes will be hosting the third Annual Irish
Sw eepstakes Scotch D oubles N o-Tap Bow ling Tournam ent
this w eekend. It features a Special N o-T ap Scotch Form at
that is ftm for everyone. The tournam ent is open to bow lers
age 18 and over and has special prizes throughout and prize
m oney for the winner. Squad times will be Saturday at 10 a.m.
and 2:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m . The cost
is $ 15/bowler.
O n Friday, M arch 14, S ham rock Lanes will have a
bow ling special o f $ 1 /gam e and $ 1 shoe rental from 1 p.m.
until closing when lanes are available and again on Saturday
from 4 p.m. until closing.
The Pot O ’ G old C afé will offer an Irish Special for
Saturday with a choice o f Rueben sandwich with French fries,
soup or salad, or H om em ade Irish Stew with salad and garlic
toast.
There will also be Karaoke Bowling on Sunday evening
from 7-9 p.m. w hich costs $5/person. The cost will include
bow ling, shoes and karaoke for the tw o hours.
“As you are out and about enjoying the many things to
do in H eppner this w eekend, be sure to stop by and see us
too,” said the Sham rock Lanes owners.
WEEKEND FOOD
T here is alw ays room for one m ore at an Irish table, and
there is alw ays room for one m ore at the m any tables set in
H eppner this weekend.
The H eppner eateries are eager to serve from their m enus,
each featuring special entrees for the w eekend. Local
restaurants include the Pot O ’ G old C afé on C hase Street
and Jo h n ’s O ther Place, G D ’s, R&W , Com m uters Café, and
B ucknum ’s on Main Street. The delicatessan foods at Central
M arket and at the Chevron station offer variety and options,
as well.
K e ssle r’s O ’B arbecue serves up a fine choice o f chicken
and ribs at the city park on M ain Street, from 11 A.M. until 4
P.M.
S etting the atm osphere for the Irish w eekend and the
cam araderie that goes with that is Mrs. O ’Leary’s Stew Feed
at the St. P atrick’s O ’S enior C enter on Friday. The
M ethodist Church congregation will be serving from 5 until 7
P.M.
The Elks Club also serves, buffet style, on Friday evening,
and on Saturday, they will offer a brunch and, at their corned
b eef and cabbage buffet, with music.
Saturday m orning begins for the hungry early risers at the
O ’Senior Center, where those volunteers will serve breakfast
from 6 until 10 A.M . They will then shift gears and cooking
w are, to prepare their hom em ade soup, bread, and pie for
the lunch and early afternoon crowd.
The St. Patrick’s congregation will start serving their ham
dinner Saturday at 4 P.M. at their parish hall. The diners will
have the pleasure o f music by the Lindsay family.
Into thfe wee hours o f Sunday m orning, the volunteer lire
departm ent will be ready to serve its W ee H ours O ’ the
M o m in ’ B reakfast. A t the fire hall on W illow Street, the
volunteers will begin serving at 10 P.M. on Saturday and stand
by with food for the hungry until 3 A.M .
T he Nazarene Church congregation will begin the Sunday
morning fare 7 A.M. Their church hall is at 335 North Gilmore,
and the cooks will be serving up a hearty breakfast until 10
A.M.
M orrow C ountyC reativeA rtsandC raftsshow . Again located
in the Les Schwab lobby, the exhibit o f works by several local
artists and craftspersons will be open from 9 A.M . until 3 P.M.
on Saturday.
T he m em bers o f the arts and crafts group expose their
individuality through a vast variety o f m edium s. N ew to this
year’s show are paintings by nationally recognized award winner
Sandra H aynes. T he w ork o f another featured artist, M olly
Day, has enjoyed w ide distribution.
Som e w orks w ill be for sale, including prints o f R obert
W alton’s m ural that w ill soon enhance the w est side o f the
agricultural exhibit building. Fram ed, m atted, and num bered
prints o f the historic H eppner M ain Street scene are available
in tw o sizes.
MUSEUMS
“O ne o f the finest collections o f farm equipm ent in the
N orthw est,” according to the State o f O regon, is open to the
public on Saturday from 11 A .M . until 4 P.M. V olunteers
continue to improve the display and welcom e new visitors and
area residents to ex p lo re the m any m achines and tools
historically important to the farming and ranching industries o f
Eastern O regon. T he exhibit building is located at the north
end o f H eppner by G reen Feed and S eed by H ighw ay 74.
Volunteers also maintain the Morrow County Museum, which
continues to earn accolades from visitors. N ew exhibits have
been created during the w inter closure, and C urator R obin
K rebs is eager to w elcom e visitors on Friday and Saturday.
A m ong its m any displays and collections, the m useum will
feature a “sheepherder’s exhibit” and an informative coverage
o f the 1903 H eppner Flood. Though the m useum will charge
no entry fee, but free will donations will be accepted to help
with the upkeep. H ours will be from 1 until 5 P.M. on Friday
and 10 A .M . until 5 P.M. on Saturday The m useum /library
building is located on North M ain Street by the city park.
AUCTION
“Som ething for everyone” seem s the m otto for the St. P at’s
A uction crew - the Parent-Teacher C lub m em bers - and the
list o f donations to this fundraiser supports that claim . On
Friday at 7 P.M. even leprechauns will want to join the festive
event, upstairs at the Elks Club. (The building now features an
elevator, so clim bing stairs will not be necessary.)
Joe and Leanne Lindsay will entertain brow sers and bidders
with their music and hum or before and during the auction, and
finger-food trays will help to fortify even the m eekest bidder.
A bonus during the evening will be the eagerly anticipated first
draw ing for $ 100 from the “pot o ’ gold.”
Som e o f the items that Ken Grieb will auction that evening are
on view in the H eppner TV O ffice w indow , but m any m ore
will also tempt the bidders at the silent and live auctions. Raffle
tickets will be sold for a barbeque grill. D oor prizes will be
num erous, som e that w ill be go to the w inning b idders on
buckets o f treasures created by the teachers o f H eppner
Elementary School. Each bucket contains a collection o f items
featuring a particular them e, and som e buckets will contain
winning door-prize tickets.
Several packages are featured at the w ee bit o ’ b id d ers’
blow out this year, packages o f p am pering and pleasure for
both m en and w om en, packages for the sports-m inded,
packages for the persons w ho w ant a get-aw ay. A nd m any
large and sm all item s aw ait the crow d Friday evening, so
everyone will w ant to sign in early enough to get a b id d e r’s
num ber before the fun begins at 7.
O’DUCKY RACE
“On your m ark, get s e t... float!!!” A nd the race will be on!
The O ’Ducky Race starts at the M ay Street Bridge, in front o f
the courthouse at 3 P.M. on Saturday. D epending on the
strength o f the W illow C reek current, the w ee w inners o f the
annual race will be floating to the finish line at the footbridge by
the m useum building and the RV park about 15 or 20 m inutes
later.
Entering a duck (plastic) in the race is sim ple and could result
in a prize o f $ 100, $75, $50, $25, or $ 10. T he first five places
are paid. D ucks are for sale on M ain S treet near the TV
office until shortly before race tim e. Each entry costs $3 or
tw o-for-$5.
The luck o f the Irish has been w ith m any a visitor, as well as
local participants, over the years. The chairman, John McCabe,
reports that last year at least one o f the prizes had to be mailed
to a w in n er from B eaverton. P roceeds from the O ’D ucky
Race help to finance the Colt football program .
KIDS CARNIVAL
Wee ones and their parents will find m any attractions to
entertain and delight them on Saturday at the Little
Leprechaun Kam ival and Kids Kuisine.
Located betw een the Shoe B ox building and the post
office, the H eppner Day Care will offer a “duck pond,”
m iniature golf, face painting, a “ju n k food w alk,” a bean bag
toss, and a “w heel o f fun.” Tickets that cost 25 cents each
or $ 1 for five can be used for the activities and the snack
shack. Hot dogs, brow nies, and drinks are the m ain m enu
items.
This entertainm ent center for little people will open at 11
A.M . It will close for the parade and then run again until
2:30 P.M. Proceeds from the attraction will go to the
H eppner Day Care.
LIBRARY
“ Irish” is the them e o f the O regon Trail Library’s St. P at’s
C hildren's W orkshop on Friday. The staff will provide
m aterials, m odels, and assistance to participants who want
to m ake a variety o f item s with an Irish motif. The
w orkshop will run from 9:30 until 4:30, and the library will
stay open until 5. O n Saturday, brow sers are w elcom e from
11 A.M . until 3 P.M. T he library is by the city park on M ain
Street.
at the E lk’s Club this Saturday in conjunction with H eppner’s
St. Patrick’s Celebration. This has become a tradition that began
w ith Ted Sm ith and Jim Farley. Tom M elton has taken over
the “DJ” position for the past few years and really enjoys dishing
out the “ B larney” and spending tim e in H eppner with John
D oherty and the Irish Singers. For the past couple o f years,
Dominique Monahan, who grew up in this area, has been Tom ’s
sidekick.
O ther m usical num bers will be perform ed by the
Sentim entalists, Steve Pyle and his bagpipes, Rev. K eith
Brudevold, Peg Willis with M ulligan Stew and Shenanigans,
as well as The Sham rocks perform ing an original song for the
Celebration.
The broadcast begins at 10 a.m . and lasts until it’s
over. Eveiyone is invited to come and join in the Brogue Contest
and lots o f other blarney.
St. Pat’s Saturday shuttle bus
schedule
More than a wee distance exists among some weekend
events, so St. P at’s Saturday shuttle service will surely prove
useful. V olunteer leprechauns will be m aking their stops
throughout the day, at one-hour intervals, from 8 a.m. until 5
p.m.
B rightly colored sidew alk signs will m ark the stops,
from the W illow Creek RV Park to the Sheep Dog Trials north
o f tow n. T he service is free and the drivers are eager to get
celebrants w here they w ant to be. They also stress that they
w ill m ake every effort to m aintain the schedule, though
unforeseen circumstances m ight create brief delays from time
to time.

This I know, after 14 years o f co-chairing a W ee Bit
O ’ Ireland, that good co-chairm en or w om en as the case may
be are indispensable. For the past seven o f those years, C ara
O sm in has been that w om an. A n Irish Toast to m y cohort in
shenanigans over the years and to the St. Patrick’s Committee.
Where would we be without the likes o ’ the committee?
To be com m ended for their dedication in the planning o f the

A dded to the above, are the m any organizations who
put on additional events, apart from the com m ittee funded
events, to both enhance the celebration and m ake m oney for
th eir various projects. T hroughout the years, the St. P a t’s
C om m ittee has been able to donate speakers to the rodeo,
contribute to the A ssisted Living facility, help w ith the Elks
elevator, and this year purchase a new music and speaker system
for all o f the parades and at long last buy the memorial drinking
fountain.
T he annual celebration is funded by the St. P a t’s
A uction to be held Friday night. T he com m ittee invited the
Parents C lub to assist in running the fundraiser this year with
one h a lf o f the funds to go to ongoing celebrations; one forth
to the Cham ber for event marketing, sharing office staff, office
equipment; and one forth toward Parents Club designated youth
projects such as Sixth G rade O u td o o r School. R ub elbow s
with friends, neighbors, visitors and leprechauns while you bid
on your favorite item and have fun.

opened for R iverdance in Las Vegas? T hese fellow s com e
w ith rave review s. N olan M urray, alm ost a local, is from
LaG rande and jo in ed T iller’s in 2001. See them perform at 7
p.m. at the Heppner High School cafetorium on Saturday night.
Tickets are limited due to space. They are available at G ardner’s
M e n ’s W ear and in the green inform ation booth, staffed by
W illow Valley Service Club. It is highly recom m ended that
tickets be purchased ahead o f tim e.

Irish Hoopshoot sign-ups to be held
The Irish H oopshoot sign-ups will be held Saturday,
M arch 15, from 8-10 a.m. w ith the shoot to begin at 10 a.m.
The event will be held in the Bank o f Eastern Oregon driveway.
Prizes will be aw arded for R & W D rive-In, in boys
and girls divisions for ages: 6-8, 9-12, 13-16, and 17-up.
Players will shoot the 3-ball in the “Round the World” contest.
