Mustang boys beat Umatilla
to get second seed

The Heppner Mustang
boys went on a 25-0 run in the
first quarter and early in the
second and carried it to a 52-
38 win over the Umatilla
Vikings on Saturday, Feb. 22
in Hermiston. The win gave the
Mustangs the second seed in
the
C olum bia
Basin
Conference district tournament
as the two teams ended the
CBC season tied at 11-3. The
Mustangs improved to 19-6 on
the year.
The Vikings lead early
4-0 but the Mustangs got their
running game going getting six
points from Justin Botefuhr, five
points, including a 3-pointer,
from Chuy Elguezabal; and
three points from Luke Murray
to take a 20-4 lead after one.
Brian Smith had four
points in the second as the
Mustangs took a 27-7 lead, but
the Vikings came back to cut
the lead to 31 -17 at the half.
Brad Adams had five
points, including a 3-pointer,
and Brandon Seitz four points
as the Mustangs built their lead
to 44-27 after three and
coasted through the fourth to
the win.
Adams led a balanced
scoring attack with 10 points,
13 rebounds and two assists.
Elguezabal scored nine points,
dishing out six assists and
getting six steals. Smith had
eight points and 10 rebounds
and Seitz hit four of five shots
for eight points and grabbed
four rebounds. Murray had
four rebounds and three steals
and Tanner Britt had three
steals.

Mustangs lose to Vikings in overtime to end season

The Heppner Mustang
boys’ basketball team saw their
season end in a disappointing
58-50 overtime loss to the
U m atilla V ikings at the
C onvention C en ter in
Pendleton on Friday, Feb. 28
in the C olum bia B asin

tournament.
The
M ustangs,
coached by Ken Eckman and
assisted by Shane Matheny,
ended the year with a 20-7
record and will be losing
seniors, Brad Adams, Donald
Adams, Josh Winters, Doug
Orwick and Conor Kilkenny.
The Vikings took an
early 3-0 lead, but the
Mustangs come back with a
jumper by Brad Adams and a
3-pointer from Luke Murray to
take a 5-3 lead. The Vikings
scored four straig h t, but
Brandon Seitz hit two long
jumpers from the baseline to
make it 9-7. The Vikings came
back to take an 11-10 lead.
Tanner Britt hit a 3-pointer to
five the Mustangs back the
lead, but the Vikings tied it at
13-13 after one.
Chuy Elguezabal hit
one o f two free throws and
Adams hit a jumper to open the
second. The Vikings came
back w ith a 7-0 run, but
Elguezabal hit a 3-pointer at the
end o f the second to cut the
lead to 20-19 at the half.
Seitz scored o ff a
rebound to open the third and
after the Vikings hit two of three
free throws, Josh Winters hit a
3-pointer to make it 24-22.
After a basket by the Vikings,
Murray hit a 3-pointer. The
Vikings then scored three
straight points, but Elguezabal
hit back-to-back 3-pointers,
the last one a long one at the
buzzer to end the third with the
Mustangs leading 33-27.
Justin Botefuhr hit a 3-
pointer to open the fourth,
giving the Mustangs a 36-27
lead, but the Vikings scored five
straight to make it 36-32.
The two teams tossed
points back and forth as Adams
hit a long jum per and the
Vikings scored four straight;
then, Adams completed a
th ree-p o in t play and the
Vikings hit two free throws.
Ending the round, Adams fed
Seitz for a lay-in to make it 43-
38.
The Vikings went on to
score eight straight points
before Murray scored off a
drive to cut the lead to 46-45
with 15 seconds left. The
Vikings missed two free throws
with 8.8 seconds left, but got
rebound and the Mustangs
were forced to foul. The
Vikings hit two free throws
with 7.2 second left to take a
48-45 lead, but Elguezabal hit
Adams who launched a 25-foot
shot at the buzzer that hit
nothing but net to send the
game to overtime.
Botetuhr hit one of two
free throws to open the extra
period, but the Vikings scored
six straight before Seitz hit one
o f two free throws to get the
Mustangs to w ithin 54-51. The
Vikings hit four o f six free
throws in the last 30 seconds
to preserve the win and earn
the state tournament birth.

Mustangs with 13 points and
nine rebounds. Elguezabal
added 10 points, eight assists
and three steals. Seitz had nine
points, eight rebounds and
seven blocked shots. Murray
had eight points, six rebounds

The Mustangs hit nine
o f 21 from the three-point
range, but just five o f 11 from
the free throw line compared
to the Vikings 18 o f 31 from
the-line.

Class o f’73 to hold
meeting
The Heppner High
School Class o f 1973 will be
holding a class reunion meeting,
Sunday, March 9. The meeting
will be held at GD’s in Heppner
at 2 p.m.

ceived a report from a caller in
Boardman of shots fired near
her residence. There were nu­
merous gunshots heard due to
New Year’s Eve. An officer
was unable to locate anyone.

that they heard a gun shot and
now have a hole in their ceil­
ing.

venile for No Operator’s Li­
cense and No Insurance. The
vehicle was impounded.

hang-up 911 calls from a resi­
dence in Boardman. The resi­
dents were warned about the

from a caller in Boardman of
loud music coming from her
neighbor’s residence.

subjects involved.

Dept, that Stacie Ann Meeks,
26, was arrested on an Irrigon
Justice Court warrant for Fail­

License Suspended. She was
cited and released.

of a suspicious vehicle hanging
around Hager Park.

for an officer contact from a
caller at the Boardman Texaco
regarding a man’s vehicle win­
dow that had been broken.

from a 13-year-old at the east-

while traveling to Montana. The
father was found in Washing­
ton and arrangements made for
the juvenile to be returned.

male subjects in it; one subject
with blood on his face ran into

mined all was okay.

vehicle accident.

Irrigon regarding questions
about a children services issue.

gency in Boardman. It was de­
termined to be a family distur­
bance between a mother and
son.
Jan. 3: MCSO re­
ceived a report from a caller in
Irrigon of a loud noise outside
her residence, the dog growled,
and then she heard a “rig” in
front o f the residence. Depu­
ties were unable to locate any­
one.
-MCSO received a
report from the Salem Police
Dept, that James Alan Cavan,
22, on a Heppner Justice Court
warrant for Failure to Pay Fine/
Failure to Appear; he also had
a warrant out of state for Pa­
role and Probation. A hold was
placed for Morrow County. He
was lodged at the Marion
County Jail.

Dept, officer arrested Michelle
Lynn Fisher, 28, on a Skagit
County warrant for Forgery/
Identity Theft. She was lodged
at the Umatilla County Jail.

report of lights stolen off a road
grater in the last 4-5 days at
Patterson Ferry/Highway 730.

Randall Vernon Wright, 40, on
a Skagit County warrant for
Forgery/ldentity Theft. He was
lodged at the Umatilla County
Jail.

a caller in lone of a building on
fire that was fully engulfed. It
was determined to be a con­
trolled bum but other buildings
needed protection.

55 mph zone.

report that someone has been
cutting fences in Irrigon.
-MCSO received a
report from a subject in Irrigon
that someone took the sub­
ject’s wheelbarrow sometime
in the last month.

71 mph in a 55 mph zone.
-MCSO received a
report of an alarm at the Riv­
erside H igh School in
Boardman. It was determined
all was okay; a game was go­
ing on.

report from a caller in Irrigon
that Christmas lights had been
taken from her porch. The call­
er called back and said the
lights had been found.
-MCSO received a
rep o rt from a c aller in
Boardman that a female sub­
ject was on her property and
had been asked to leave. The
subject was there regarding a
custody/visitation issue. It was
unknown if the subject was still
at the location.
-MCSO received a
request for deputy contact from
the above subject regarding
feeling threatened and possible
child endangerment.

olation o f the Basic Rule, 75
mph in a 55 mph zone.

report o f a visitor sign, possi­
bly belonging to the hospital or
senior center, was down and
left behind the St. Patrick’s
Senior Center in Heppner.

report from a caller in Irrigon
about illegal fireworks going off;
the fireworks had been occur­
ring since New Year’s.

hicle in the ditch on Highway
207 just past the Bombing
Range Road. No injuries had
occurred.

pect had fled the scene. A

hear screaming and yelling

a caller in Irrigon for a 75-year-
old female who was dehydrat­
ed and having difficulty breath­
ing. The patient was transport­
ed to Good Shepherd Medi­
cal Center in Hermiston.

was left parked on a ramp and
not the parking lot. It seemed
suspicious.
