Mustangs drop
overtime game
to Vikings

The H eppner M ustang
boys’ varsity couldn't hang on to
a lead in the fourth quarter and
lost 77-72 in overtim e to the
Umatilla Vikings on Friday, Jan.
24 in Umatilla. The loss dropped
their Columbia Basin Conference
record to 3-2 and their overall
record to 10-5 on the year.
The team s played even
through the first quarter as Luke
Murray hit tw o free throw s and
scored o ff a drive to tie it at 4-4.
Brandon Seitz hit tw o baseline
jum pers and C huy E lguezabal
scored o ff the fast break to give
the M ustangs a 10-8 lead. The
Vikings cam e back w ith five
straight but Josh Winters hit a 3-
pointer to tie it again at 13-13,
but the Vikings scored to end the
first with a 15-13 lead.
M urray scored tw ice
and Tanner Britt hit a long jumper
to give the M ustangs a 19-17
lead, then Elguezabal hit a 3-
pointer. M urray com pleted a
three-point play and Seitz hit a
baseline ju m p e r to m ake it 28-
22, but the Vikings w ent on an
11-1 run to end the h a lf w ith a
33-29 lead.
T he Vikings extended
th e ir le a d to 3 9 -2 9 , b u t
E lguezabal hit a 3-pointer and
Brad A dam s hit a ju m p e r and
com pleted a three-point play to
m ake it 41-37. M urray hit a
running jum per, Winters hit a 3-
pointer and Justin Botefiihr made
one o f tw o free throw s to give
the M u stan g s a 43-42 lead.
W inters then hit a jum per and a
3-pointer, while Brad Adam s hit
a lo n g ju m p e r and D o n a ld
A dam s hit a 3-pointer at the
buzzer to give the M ustangs a
53-46 lead after three.
The Vikings cam e right
back to take a 54-53 lead, but
Brad Adam s hit two free throws
and Elguezabal made a 3-pointer
to five the M ustangs back the
lead at 58-54. Elguezabal scored
o ff a drive and Botefiihr hit one
o f two free throws to make it 61 -
57, but the Vikings again cam e
back to take a 63-62 lead w ith
2:41 left. Brian Smith made one
o f tw o free th ro w s b u t the
Vikings made two free throws to
take a three-point lead with 1:16
left. Brad A dam s scored o ff a
rebound and was fouled and
m ade the free throws to tie it up
w ith 51 seconds left «t 65-65.
The Vikings were running out the
clock for the last shot but Winters
stole the ball with less than five
seconds left. A fter a tim eout,
Elguezabal’s running 3-pointer at
the buzzer bounced o ff the rim
and the gam e went to overtime.

it 73-67. Smith hit a jum per and
Elguezabal hit a long 3-pointer
to get w ithin 74-72, but the
Vikings scored the final three

The Mustangs fell behind
the Pioneers, 13-11, after one
despite getting four points from
Rory K ilkenny and a 3-pointer
from Roy Proctor and still trailed,
33-29, at the half as M ikel Britt
scored nine points in the second
quarter.
The Pioneers extended
their lead to 53-43 after three as
M atthew VanCleave had seven
points and M att Kenny had five
p o in ts in the th ird and they
continued to lead throughout the
fourth despite eight more points
from VanCleave and another 3-
pointer from Proctor.

Heppner Mustang J V girls rallied
to beat the visiting Sherm an
C o u n ty H u sk ie s, 4 2 -3 9 , on
Saturday, Jan. 25 to im prove
their record to 9-5 on the year.
The M ustangs will be at Pilot
Rock on Friday, Jan. 31 before
p lay in g C u lv e r at ho m e on
Saturday, Feb. 1.
The M ustangs took an
11 -5 lead over the Vikings after
one, getting four points from
Terra Wilson and increased it to
23-14 at the half, getting four
points from Blair Keithley and
three m ore from W ilson in the
second quarter.
A 17-0 advantage in the
third, as K atie B ritt hit a 3-
pointer, helped the M ustangs to
a 40-14 lead after three and they
coasted through the fourth getting
th re e p o in ts fro m H e a th e r
Yocom.
W ilson had nine points
and three steals, Britt had eight
points and two assists, Susan
Southw orth had seven points,
K eithley had six points, five
rebounds and two steals, Laurie
M urray had nine reb o u n d s,

win 55-51 on Saturday, Jan. 25.

improved their Columbia Basin

The Huskies cut the lead to one
