Mustang girls fall to Bulldogs

Heppner Mustang v arsity girls fell
behind early and couldn’t make
up the ground as they lost to the
H erm iston B ulldog JV s, 37-22
on Monday, Jan. 6 in Hermiston
to w rap up th eir non -leag u e
schedule with a 4-6 record.
The Bulldogs took a 15-
4 le a d a f t e r o n e , b u t th e
M ustangs got a 3-pointer from
N ikki Sisk in the second to get
within 17-10 at the half.
M adison Bailey hit a 3-
p o in te r in th e th ird b u t the
Bulldogs pulled away to a 30-16
lead and coasted to the win.
Bailey led the Mustangs
with six points, five steals and foi ir
rebounds. C helsea B ritt added
five points, six rebounds and two
steals. Susan Southw orth and
Linsey M itchell each had four

Mustang JV boys rebound for split

M cEw en on Friday, Jan. 10, the

rebounded for a hard fought 76-
63 win at home over the Stanfield
Tigers on Saturday, Jan. 11. The
M ustangs (9-1) will be at home,

The T igerscots took a
-10 lead after one despite four
points from the M ustangs Brian
Sm ith and led 27-22 at the h a lf
despite five points, including a 3-
pointers from Cody Walton and
a 3-pointer from Jode Coil. The
Tigerscots increased their lead to
3 8 -3 1 a f te r t h r e e b u t th e
M ustangs rallied in the fourth
getting six points from Zach
Skaggs, four points from K yler
Lovgren and a 3-pointer from
Josh Gutierrez, but they couldn’t
get over the hum p as they fell 49-
46.
Skaggs led the Mustangs
with 10 points, hitting six o f eight
free throw s, w ith Sm ith adding
seven points. Lovgren finished
with six points, with Walton, Coil
and G utierrez each adding five
points.
The M ustangs cam e out
running in the first quarter against
Stanfield getting five points from
M att Young, four each from
Aaron Griffith and Gutierrez and
three from Haguew ood taking a
21-15 lead. They kept up the
pressure in the second getting
four points each from Skaggs,
W alton and Eric Torres as they
took a 43-28 halftim e lead. The
Mustangs hit 11 o f 18 free throws
in the first half.

Mustang JV girls earn split over weekend

The Heppner M ustang
JV girls dropped a 38-29
decision to the Weston-
M cEwen Tigerscots on Friday,
Jan. 10, in Athena, but bounced
back with a 50-46 win over the
visiting Stanfield Tigers on
Saturday, Jan. 11.
The M ustangs (5-5) will
host W ahtonka on Friday, Jan.
17 and will travel to C ulver on
Saturday, Jan. 18.
A gainst the Tigerscots
the M ustangs trailed 10-4 after
one but got four points from Katie
B ritt to get w ith in 15-13 at
halftime. Susan Southworth had
four points in the third but the
Tigerscots increased their lead to
26-19 after three and took the
win despite five points, including
a 3-pointers from Britt and Blair
Keithley hitting tliree o f four free
throws.
Britt led the M ustangs
with nine points with Southworth,
Tiffany Piper and Linsey Mitchell
each adding four points.
The Mustangs fell behind
11 -8 after one against the Tigers
despite four points from Laurie
M urray but they cam e back to
take a 17-16 lead at the h a lf
getting four points from Terra
Wilson. The Mustangs exploded
in the third getting seven points,

lead after three. The tigers fought

Mustang girls nip Tigers

start to nip the visiting Stanfield
Tigers 56-54 to get their first
Columbia Basin Conference win
o f the season. The M ustangs (1 -
1 in CBC, 5-7 overall) playing
their third straight game without
leading scorer Lacey M atteson
will be at home against Wahtonka
on Friday, Jan. 17 and will be on
the road to C ulver on Saturday,
Jan. 18.
The Tigers had things
going their way early in the first
quarter taking a 9-0 lead before
Susan Southworth hit one o f two
free throw s with 5:29 left in the
quarter. N ikki Sisk and Jesse
K em pas hit 3-pointers to m ake
it 11-7 a n d T y ly n n S m ith
converted a three-point play to
m ake it 13-10. Sm ith hit a long
ju m p e r, S o u th w o rth sc o re d
inside and B rooke Rust hit a
short ju m p er but the M ustangs
still trailed 21-16 until Kem pas
drove for a lay-in to end the
quarter w ith the Tigers leading
21-18.

second with a drive and lay-in,
and hit one o f tw o free throw s,
w hile M adison B ailey hit a 3-
poiner to give the Mustangs their
first lead 24-23. The Tigers led
29-28 until R ust scored inside
and Stefanie Hanson scored o ff
a rebound but the Tigers cam e
back to lead by one but Hanson
hit one o f tw o free throw s to tie
it a 34-34 at the half.
Smith hit a short jum per
to begin the third and H anson
scored off a pass from Bailey but
the Tigers cam e back to take a
42-28 lead. H anson scored o ff
a pass from Rust and hit a 3-
pointer to end the third and give
the M ustangs a 43-42 lead.

tied again Chelsey Britt made one

scored to take the lead with 2:00
left. M itchell m ade a free throw
to tie it w ith 1:39 left and the
Tigers took the lead at 54-53 with
1:26 left. Kem pas fed Rust for a
s h o rt ju m p e r to g iv e th e
M ustangs the lead with 1:06 left
and b o th team s m issed free
throws in the final seconds until
H anson reb o u n d ed a m issed
T iger shot and passed out to
K em pas w ho w as fouled w ith
9.4 seconds left. Kempas hit one
o f two free throws and the Tigers
had a chance to tie but missed a
shot inside at the buzzer as the
M ustangs escaped with the win.
Sm ith led the M ustangs
w ith 13 points, nine rebounds,
four assists and tw o steals. Rust
a d d e d 11 p o in ts a n d 10
rebounds. Southworth had four
points and 20 rebounds, Hanson
had 10 points and Sisk had seven
p o in ts a n d fo u r re b o u n d s .
K e m p a s had six p o in ts, six
rebounds and three assists and
Bailey had two assists.
