    Mustang girls fall to Bulldogs

Heppner M ustang girls’ varsity
dropped their first home game o f
the year to the Hermiston Bulldog
JVs 51-32 on M onday, Dec. 9
to drop their record to 1-2 on
the year.
The M ustangs held an
early lead as Brooke Rust and
Lacey M atteson each hit short
jum pers for a 4-2 lead but the
Bulldogs ran o tf the next 11 points
before Stefanie Hanson put in a
re b o u n d s b a sk e t w ith 1:40
rem aining in the quarter but
Hermiston ended up taking a 15-
6 lead after one.
The M ustangs clim bed
back into the game getting to with
15-11 on a M adison Bailey 3-
pointer and Susan Southworth's
lay-in on a pass from Bailey. After
a B ulldog basket, Bailey hit a
runningjum pertom ake it 17-13
but the Bulldogs w ent on a 7-1
run to close out the first half with
a 24-14 lead.
The Bulldogs scored first
in the third, but Matteson hit a 3-
pointer then Tylynn Smith hit a
jum per to m ake it 28-19 but the
Bulldogs extended their lead to
33-19. M atteson hit a running
jum per but the Bulldogs scored
the last six points o f the third to
take a 39-21 lead into the fourth.
Southworth converted a
three-point play and M atteson
scored o ffa drive to make it 43-
26 but the B ulldogs extended
their lead again to 51 -27 before
Sm ith hit tw o free throw s and
Nikki Sisk converted a three-
p o in t p lay to c lo se out the
scoring.

Mustang JV boys roll past Knights
Mustang boys outlast Pirates
in overtime

The H eppner M ustang
boys’ varsity withstood a furious
late rally by the visiting Riverside
Pirates to put out a 54-45 w in in
overtim e on Friday, Dec. 13 to
rem ain unbeaten at 4-0 in the
pre-season. The M ustangs w ill
host the South Morrow’ County
Tournament on Friday, Dec. 20
and Saturday, Dec. 21 w ith lone,
P e n d leto n JV a n d K lick ita t
joining Heppner.
The M ustangs led 6-5
after one getting all six points
from Luke Murray and extended
it to 15-9 at the half. Justin
Botefuhr scored four points in the
third as they increased their lead
to 27-20 going into the fourth and
led by ten points late as Chuy
Elguezabal hit five o f six free
th ro w s and D o n a ld A d am s
scored four points but the Pirates
rallied to tie it up and send it to
overtime.
The Mustangs outscored
the Pirates 12-3 in overtim e
getting five points from Murray
hitting three o f five free throws,
four points from Elguezabal and
three points from Brad Adams to
pull away for the win.

rebounds and three steals w ith
Elguezabal adding 11 points,
three steals and three assists.
Brad Adam s scored nine points,
grabbed 15 rebounds and had
two assists, w hile Donald Adams
had seven points and grabbed

boys to a 61-47 win over the
visiting W alla Walla A cadem y
Knights on Tuesday, Dec. 10 to
improve their non-league record
to 3-0 on the year. The Mustangs
will host the South M orrow
County Tournament on Friday,
Dec. 20 and Saturday, Dec. 21.
Luke Murray had the hot
hand in the first quarter scoring
11 points as the M ustangs took
a 17-11 lead after on and he
added five m ore in the. second
and Chuy Elguezabal scored six
points as they took a 32-25 lead
at halftime.

control in the third outscoring the
Knights 16-4 getting eight points
from Brad Adams and four more
from Elguezabal to take a 48-29
lead and coast to the w in.
M urray hit six o f 10
shorts to lend the mustangs with
20 points, hitting eight o f 10 free
throws and grabbed six rebounds
while Elguezabal hit seven o f 11
shots for 19 points and had six
assists, five rebounds and four
steals. Adams had 12 points and
grabbed 10 rebounds, five o f
them offensive, Justin Botefuhr

JV boys rolled to a 79-41 win
over the visiting Walla Walla
Academy JVs on Tuesday, Dec.
10 to run their record to 2-0 on
the year. The Mustangs w ill travel
to lone on Thursday, Dec. 19
and w ill play after the girls’ game
at 5:30 p.m.
The Mustangs got going
early getting six points from
Brandon Seitz, five from Jode
Coil, including a 3-pointer, and
four from Zack Skaggs taking a
21 -8 lead after one. Tyler Boyer
hit a 3-pointer in the second half
to help the Mustangs extend their
lead to 35-18 at halftime.
Judd Lemmon and Seitz
each scored six points in the third
as the M ustangs outscored the
Knights 21 -4 in the third, taking
a 56-22 lead after three and got
nine points from Skaggs and four
each from Seitz and Lemmon as
they coasted through the fourth
to the easy win.

M ustangs got six m ore points
from Seitz in the fourth to hang
on for the win.
