Mustangs lose in quarterfinals to Dayton

D ayton Pirated used a strong
r u n n in g g a m e to b e a t th e
Heppner Mustangs 26-14 in the
quarterfinals o f the O SA A US
Bank/Les Schwab Tires football
playoffs in a rainy, w indy and
s lo p p y g a m e at D a y to n on
S a tu rd a y , N o v . 16. T h e
M ustangs ended their season
w ith a 9 and 2 record as nine
seniors played their final game.

T h e P ira te s to o k th e
opening k ic k o ff and used 12
plays to go 53 yards culminating
on a B arry Johnson nine-yard
run. The extra point kick was no
good but the Pirates led 6-0
midway through the first quarter.
The Mustangs took over
at their 34-yard line on their first
possession but were unable to get
a first down but Brad Adam s got
off a 57-yard punt that rolled dead
at the Pirates four-yard line.
The Pirates drove deep
into M ustang territory before a
fum ble was picked up by Brian
H aguew ood and returned 69
yards to the seven-yard line.
A dam s picked up four yards to
set up a three-yard run into the
end zone by C huy Elguezabal.
The kick w as no good and the
gam e was tied up at 6-6 early in
the second quarter.
The Pirates then went on
a 10-play drive going 65 yards
w ith C aleb K earns going four
yards for the go-ahead score.
The tw o-point conversion run
w as stopped but the Pirates led
12-6 midway through the second
quarter.
T h e M u s ta n g s w e re
unable to m ove the ball and the
Pirates took over a N h e ir ow n
31 -yard line after a 32-yard punt
by Adam s. The Pirates got a 61 -
yard run from Tyler W ilson on
third and long to the four-yard
line where Dante Rosario took it
in for the touchdow n. The two-
point conversion try failed again
but the Pirates led 18-6 late in
the first half.
The M ustangs took the
second-half kickoff and failed to
m ove the ball forcing another
punt, w hich A dam s hit for 45
yards to the 14-yard line. The
M ustangs defense then stepped
up forcing the Pirates to punt for
th e firs t tim e , w h ic h C h u y
E lguezabal returned to the 30-
yard line.
A fter a m otion penalty,
Kyler Lovgren ran for two yards
then Elguezabal ran for six then
hit Justin Botefuhr for a 22-yard
gain to the Dayton 40-yard line.

though and the Pirates took over
on downs.
The Pirates drove deep
into Mustangs territory' before the
defense stiffened, taking over at
their own seventeen on downs.
Lovgren ran for three yards,
E lguezabal broke loose for 15
yards, A dam s picked up three,
Elguezabal went for six yards and
on the first play o f the fourth
quarter a fumble was recovered
by the Pirates at the M ustangs
48-yard line.
A f te r a s h o rt g a in
Rosario then broke free for a 45-
yard touchdown run. Kearns hit
W ils o n fo r th e tw o - p o in t
conversion to give the Pirates a
26-6 lead.
T h e M u s ta n g s w e re
unable to m ove the ball after
taking the kickoff to their 22-yard
line and a 47-yard punt by Adams
took D ayton back to their 27-
yard line.

team s, with two other players
receiving honorable mentions.
Chuy Elguezabal was

quarterback and as well as a first-
team d e fe n siv e back . B rad
A dam s was chosen as a first-
team running back, and Tyler
Boyer received an honorable
mention as a running back. Justin
Botefuhr was picked as a first-
tea m re c e iv e r, w h ile L u k e
M u rra y is a s e c o n d - te a m
receiver. D onald A dam s and

as offensive linemen, with Adams

For the defensive team ,

defense, Ben Turrell was selected

recovered and ran out the clock
to m ove on to the semi-finals.
