Mustangs get past Tigers 41-16

by getting past a pesky Stanfield
Tiger team, 41-16, on Friday,
N ov. 1 in S ta n fie ld . T he
Mustangs finished the regular
season at 8 and 1 overall and 6
and 0 in theCBC.
As the number one seed
out of the CBC, the Mustangs will
be at home in the first round o f
the OSAA State 2A playoffs
against the number two seed out
o f the Tri-River League the
Kennedy Trojans. The game will
be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov.
9. Kennedy, o f Mt. Angel, lost
to Regis 6-0 on Friday to end up
in second place.
On a cold, frosty night in
Stanfield the Tigers took the
opening kick-off and drove into
Mustang territory before Jode
Coil picked offa pass inside the
10-yard line and returned to the
27-yard line. On first down,
Tanner Britt hit Justin Botefuhr
fora 17-yard gain. Brad Adams
ran twice for seven yards and
Kyler Lovgren went for eight
yards and a first down at the
Tiger forty-one.

penalties and a loss o f four yards,
Britt hit Adams for a 36-yard gain
to the eighteen. Tyler Boyer took
it to the seven where Lovgren
took it in from there for the
touchdown and kicked the extra
point for a 7-0 lead midway
through the first quarter.
The defense held and the
Mustangs took over at their own
thirteen after the punt. Adams
went for 18 yards; Boyer went
for five then broke free for a 38-
yard gain. Britt hit Lovgren for a
19-yard gain to the seven where
Adams ran twice, the second one
from fiv e y ard s out fo r a
touchdown. The kick was no
good but the Mustangs led 13-0
early in the second quarter.
The Tigers came right
back and scored on a 68-yard
pass and ran in the two-point
conversion to get within 13-8.
On the Mustangs next
possession the Tigers turned an
interception into a three-yard run
for their second touchdown and
p a sse d for th e tw o -p o in t
conversion to take a 16-13 lead
with 7:30 left in the second
quarter.
The M ustangs cam e
right back though, getting a 25-
yard kick return from Coil to the
38-yard line. Adams went for 16
yards and a facemask penalty
took the ball to the 32-yard line.
Adams then rushed five times,
the last one from one yard out
for the go-ahead touchdown.
The two-point conversion failed
but the Mustangs now led 19-16
with 4:57 left.
The defense held with the
Mustangs taking over on downs
at their own thirty-nine. Adams
made a nice one-handed catch
o f a pass from Britt and turned it
into a 20-yard gain. A holding
penalty on the next play took the
ball back to the Mustangs 46-
yard line, but Britt hit Coil for 33
yards to the tw enty-tw o. A
fumble gave the ball back to the
Tigers to kill the drive and the half
ended with the Mustangs clinging
to a 19-16 lead.
On the Mustangs first
drive o f the second half another
fumble killed a drive but the
defense held with Coil bringing
the punt back to the thirty-one
getting a crushing block from
Botefuhr. Lovgren then broke
free and raced 69 yards for the
to u chdow n. The tw o -p o in t

Mustangs had a 25-16 lead.

possession but the Mustangs
gave up the ball on downs.
Britt then picked off a
pass as the quarterback was
being hit by Connor Kilkenny
and w ent 37 y ard s fo r a
touchdown. Britt hit Botefuhr for
the two-point conversion for a
33-16 lead with 4:53 left in the
third quarter.
The defense held again
with the Mustangs taking over at
the 27-yard line after the punt.
Adams ran for four, Britt hit Luke
Murray for 30 yards, Adams
picked up four, Britt four more
and on fourth and one the Tigers
jum ped o ff sides to give the
Mustangs a first down. Boyer ran
twice for 10 yards, Lovgren
went for 12 to the five where

the tw o-point conversion to
make it 41 -16 early in the fourth.
Britt picked off another
p ass at m id fie ld and the
Mustangs drove inside the fifteen
but the drive stalled and the Tigers
took over on downs.
The defense was led by
Donald Adams with 29 points,
with Brad Adams getting 27
points, Botefuhr and Coil each
had 24 points, Britt had 22
points, Kilkenny had 14 points
and Brian Haguewood had 13.
Lovgren, in his first game
back from a broken thumb, ran
11 tim es for 142 yards with
Adams rushing 20 times for 119
yards. Boyer had five carries for
64 yards.
