Mustang volleyball team ends season with wins

The Heppner Mustangs
v o lley b all team ended their
season on a good note winning
th e ir la s t tw o g a m e s. O n
Saturday, Oct. 26 they defeated
the visiting Umatilla Vikings 25-
14, 14-25, 25-18, and 25-17
getting 14 kills from Lacey
Matteson, nine kills from Shanna
Rietmann and six service points
from Nikki Sisk.
O n Tuesday, Oct. 29,
they beat the visiting Stanfield
Tigers, 25-16,25-23 and 25-16
g e ttin g good net play from
M atteson, B rooke Rust and
Tylynn Smith and good play from
setters G enia Grant and Jessie
Kem pas. Rachel Howard and
M aggie Bean served well and
Sisk and Madison Bailey played
well from the back row.

2002, at her hom e in O m ak,
WA.
Zittel was bom April 10,
1922, in Tw o Hills, A lberta,
Canada.
Zittel was a loving wife,
m other and friend. She was an
avid hom em aker and wonderful
c o o k . H e r h o b b ie s w e re
g a r d e n in g , re a d in g an d
n eed lew o rk . She also loved
being w ith friends and playing
cards at the Senior Center.
Zittel was preceded in
death by her husband o f 57 years,
Leon Zittel. She is survived by
her daughter, Leona Winters and
her husband Simon, o f Heppner;
her son, G eorge Zittel and wife
K a re n , o f O m a k , WA;
grandchildren, Kirsti and Jim
C ason and K olene and Zack
Z itte l; g re a t-g ra n d c h ild re n ,
Charles and Suzanneah Cason;
brothers, John, Walter, Victor,
and David; and sisters, Rosland,
Lena, Shelly, and Nancy. She
w as also preceded in death by
her brother, Joe; and sisters,
Anne and Mary.

Colts to hold Soup Feed fundraiser
T h e H e p p n e r C o lts
football team will be holding a
Soup Feed fundraiser during the
H eppner vs. Kennedy play-off
gam e, Saturday, Nov. 9. The
fundraiser will be held from 11:30
a .m . to 1 p .m ., a t th e
Fairgrounds, 4-H A nnex. The
S o u p F e e d w ill in c lu d e
h o m e m a d e s o u p s , r o lls ,
brownies, coffee, hot cocoa, and
p u n ch . C o st w ill be $4 p er
person.
The funds raised will go
towards equipment maintenance
and new equipment. The last time
th e C o lts r e c e iv e d n e w
equipm ent was about seven to
eight years ago, according to
S o n y a M c C a b e . It c o s ts
approximately $200 to outfit each

N eil P. D oherty, 84,
Denver, form erly o f lone, died
M onday, Oct. 28, 2002, at his
home in Denver.
A graveside service for
Doherty will begin at 11 a.m.
T h u rs d a y , N ov. 7, a t th e
H eppner M asonic C em etery.
Sweeney M ortuary o f Heppner
is in charge o f arrangements.

RCSC to hold meeting
The Rhea C reek Social
C lu b w ill be m e e tin g ,
Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m.,
at St. P at’s Senior Center. The
group will be going on a tour o f
the Assisted Living facility, guided
by Suzanne Jepsen. After the tour
the group will be having lunch at
GDs restaurant.

Katherine Burchell
K a th e rin e M a rg a re t
“Kay” Burchell, 84, ofCorvallis,
died Saturday, Oct. 19,2002, at
Park Place Assisted Liv ing.
Burchell was the eldest
o f five children bom to Patrick
and M argaret Healy in Heppner
and was raised there.
Burchell married Edward
Lafayette Burchell in 1935. They
lived in C orvallis w hile her
husband completed his studies at
O reg o n S tate C o lleg e , now
O regon State University. She

returned to Heppner during her
husband’s Army serv ice in World
W ar II. He rem ain ed in the
service as an officer after the w ar
and the family trav eled throughout
the United States and the world
on his assignments. He retired in
1968 and they m oved back to
C orvallis in 1971. He died in
1972.

Burchell was a m em ber
o f the Catholic Church and was
church organist during W orld
War II at St. P atrick’s Catholic
C hurch in Heppner. She had
been a C ub Scout den m other,
s c h o o lr o o m m o th e r a n d
c a te c h ism teacher. B u rchell
enjoyed gardening, especially
grow ing roses, and for several
years her garden served as a
model for a landscaping class at
O SU .
Survivors include her
daughter, Barbara Ann Burchell
o f E d in b u rg , VA; son, G ail
Patrick Burchell o f Albany; nine
g r a n d c h ild r e n ; 13 g r e a t ­
grandchildren; sister, Pat Gentry
o f Heppner; and brother, Francis
H ealy o f Portland. S he w as
preceded in death by her son,
Larry; brother, James Healy; and
sister, Elizabeth Daggett.
Beth Harriet Taylor
Beth Harriet Taylor, 75,
o f Irrig o n , d ie d o f c a n c e r,
S atu rd ay , O ct. 26, 2 0 0 2 , at
K a d le c M e d ic a l C e n te r in
Richland.
Taylor w as bom June
23, 1927, at C ouncil, ID, to
George and Ruth Bryan Russell.
She attended grade school in
Idaho then moved with her family
to the Hermiston area where her
parents took jo b s at O rdnance
during World War II. They later
m oved to Irrigon w here she
graduated from high school, she
then attended Lew iston State
N orm al School, now N orthern
Idaho State College, for a time.
In J u n e 1 9 5 2 , sh e
m arried C urtiss W. Stephens at

Reno, NV. The couple had one
daughter, Patricia. Stephens died
in 1981.
T a y lo r w o rk e d as a
telephone operator for Pacific
Northwest Bell for several years
and later went to work as a cook
fo r C h i A m e g a S o ro rity at
Washington State University. She
loved her jo b at the school and
the sorority girls. H er health
forced her retirem ent in 1989.
She then moved to Irrigon where
she lived with her m other Ruth
Bentley, and the tw o took care
o f each other.
On Dec. 19, 1998, she
m arried Jim m y “Jim ” Taylor at
Irrigon.
Taylor was a member o f
the bowling league, participated
in home extension, Alpha Club,
the Veterans o f Foreign Wars
Auxiliary, Lions, and cam ping
with the M oose Lodge.
S h e w a s an a c tiv e
gardener, grow ing vegetables
and flowers. She loved arranging
flowers. Taylor was always ready
fo r th e o p p o rtu n ity to b eat
anyone in a gam e o f darts. She
recently enjoyed a trip to Alaska
with her husband to visit his
daughter, Kim.

husband, Jim Taylor o f Irrigon;
daughter, Patricia Galenbeck o f
