Norman DeBoer shows model of the morrow county courthouse he created
Combining ideas and the
skills of each family member,
Norman DeBoer and his family
created a model of the Morrow
County Courthouse.
The model was built from
numerous pictures, a special visit
to the Courthouse to get intricate
details of the building, and inside
the mind of a carpenter.
DeBoer would build the
project in his mind at night and
bring it into reality during the day,
along with any suggestions from
his wife or family. Being skilled
in wood, when it came to siding
for the Courthouse he enlisted the
help of his daughters, Cheryl and
Suella. Cheryl used a plaster
technique to create the siding and
Suella and her family created all
the windows.

in
Boardman with his wife of 58
years, Marie. The couple moved
to Boardm an in 1991 from
Montana. From 1991 until a hip
replacement in 2001 slowed him
down a bit, he and his wife
traveled the U.S. donating his
skills as a carpenter to Boys’
ranches, churches, summer
cam ps and colleges. They
traveled in a motor home and
asked only for a motor home
hookup and worked for free.
The DeBoer’s settled in
Boardman to be close to children
and grandchildren, who keep him
busy and active with sports
activities and carpentry. He is
currently working on a cedar hope

A strong defense helped
the Heppner Mustangs win a key
C olum bia Basin Conference
game against the visiting Weston-
M cEwen Tigerscots 6-0 on
Friday, Oct. 11 and move into first
place. The win improve the
Mustangs to 3-0 in the CBC and
5 and 1 overall and have another
crucial game next week at
Culver on Friday, Oct. 18 at 2
p.m.
The Mustangs moved
into Tigerscot territory on their
first drive getting g 16 yards on a
pass from Chuy Elguezabal to
Brad Adams, and a 12-yard gain
by Adams but the drive stalled
and Weston-McEwen took over
at their 17-yard line after a punt.
Donald Adams stripped
the ball from a Tigerscot ball
carrier and Luke Murray jumped
on it at the 14-yard line. Tyler
Boyer ran for eight yards, Adams
three then Boyer took it in from
three yards out for what proved
to be the only scored of the game.
The snap on the extra point try
was bobbled and Kyler Lovgren
was tackled trying to get rid of
the ball.
On the Tigerscots next
possession they were driving
inside Mustang territory when
Jode Coil intercepted a pass at the
four-yard line. But the Mustangs
gave it right back on a fumble that
the Tigerscots recovered at the
six-yard line.
The Mustangs defense
stood up to the challenge though
and held the Tigerscots on down
taking over at the one-yard line.
Adams went for six yards on the
first play of the second quarter
the Tigerscots jumped offside to
give the Mustangs a first down at
the twelve. Adams ran three
times for 18 yards then Elguezabal
hit Justin Botefuhr for a 32-yard
gain to the Weston-McEwen 44-
yard line. The Tigerscots defense
then dug down and took over on
downs at midfield.
Elguezabal then picked
o ff a pass deep in M ustang
territory and made a spectacular
return reversing his field twice,
bringing it back to the Weston-
McEwen 39-yard line.
The M ustangs were
unable to move the ball and the
half ended up with the score 6-0.
The Tigerscots took the
second half kick-off and were
forced to punt which was downed
at the one-yard line. The
Mustangs were unable to move
the ball and forced to punt which
was brought back to the Heppner
29-yard line. But Murray killed
the threat by intercepting a pass
and bringing it back to the twenty-
three.
Adams carried the ball
10 times for 53 yards on the drive
that finally ended with the
Tigerscots taking over on downs
deep in their own territory.
The Tigerscots then put
together a drive o f their own
getting deep into the Mustangs
territory and looked like they were
going to get the tying touchdown
but the Mustangs stiffened getting
a couple of stops before Murray
jumped on another fumble at the
Mustangs 37-yard line with just
under eight minutes left.
Adams then went back to
work carrying nine times for 49
yards with Elguezabal twice for
six yards both times picking up
first downs as the Mustangs got
down to the eight-yard line before
running out the clock to preserve
the win.
Tyler Boyer gets some yardage against Tigerscots
