Send Smith back to Salem
To the Editor:
We need to send
Representative Greg Smith back
to Salem to continue the fight for
rural Oregon.
G reg’s opponent is a
vocal advocate for higher taxes,
bigger government, the delaying
of Ballot Measure 88 and raising
the vehicle registration fee.
We all know that
wasteful government programs
need to be cut before we give
more of our money to the State
of Oregon.

A friend in Representative Greg Smith
Greg never gave up on our cause.
Communication between the
citizens of lone and his office
were always open, honest,
sincere and hard working.
With one legislative session under
his belt, I can’t wait to see what
he has in store for another term
in office. With all the chaos that
term limits bring to the legislative
body, it’s great to know that our
State Representative was able to
get so much accomplished. He
served Eastern Oregon admirably,
and I’m looking forward to that
same loyalty for the 2003
Legislative Session.
(s) Marv Padberg

To the Editor:
During the 2001 session,
citizens of lone had a friend in
Representative Greg Smith.
During the countless times that
we went to Salem to advocate
for the Ione-Boardman Road,
Greg was instrumental in lining
up legislators from both sides of
the aisle to hear our testimony.
Now for anyone that has ever
been to Salem, that is no small
task, especially for a freshman
legislator. It was obvious to us
that his colleagues had a great
deal o f respect for him. We
always had captive audiences in
his presence. In summary, he
was getting things done.
Marie Key wins treasure chest

Marie Key of lone was
the winner of the Lexington Fire
Fund treasure chest raffle. The
Lexington Fire Fund, a general
fund to help the Lexington Fire
Department, sold tickets for the
chest as a fund raiser.
The Fire Fund plans to
donate money to Isaiah Stillman
who is planning to attend school
to become a fireman, according
to Jim Nelson of Lexington.
The chest, made by Jake
Haines o f Lexington, raised
approximately $ 120 in ticket sales.

Colts rally to beat
results for sheep
Stanfield 22-6
and pigs
By Rick Paullus
Trailing 6-0 after one, the
Heppner Colts came back to tie
it at halftime and went on to beat
the visiting Stanfield Tigers, 22-6,
on Wednesday, Oct. 2, to run their
record to 3 and 0 on the year. The
Colts will play U m atilla on
Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m. in
Heppner.
The Tigers scored in the
first quarter on a 43-yard run to
take a 6-0 lead after the kick was
no good.
The Colts put together
their scoring drive in the second
quarter, getting an 18-yard run
from Spencer Palmer. Dalton
Wellman picked up 30 yards,
Brent Eckman, seven yards, and
Palmer went another seven yards
to the one where Wacy Coil took
it into the end zone. The kick was
no good and the half ended with
the score 6-6.
The Colts’ defense held,
forcing Stanfield to punt on their
first possession of the second half
and the offense went right to
work. Palmer broke free for 30
yards, Wellman, five, and Palmer
took in from 14 yards out. Matt
Holland kicked the extra point to
give the Colts a 14-6 lead with
2:38 left in the third.
After another Stanfield
punt, the Colts went back to work
with Palmer gaining 35 yards, Coil
picking up eight and then a
personal foul penalty took the ball
inside the 20-yard line. Wellman
ran twice for six yards. Palmer
for three and Coil took it down to
the two but a fumble on the next
play gave Stanfield back the ball.
The defense held with the
Colts taking over at the 14 on
downs where Palmer took it
around end and into the end zone
for the clinching touchdown.
Holland’s kick was good to make
it 22-6.
The
C o lts’ Tony
Lankford picked off a pass and
returned it 10 yards to the
Stanfield 48-yard line where the
Colts ran out the clock to take the
win.
Thje defense played wpll
after allow ing the long touchdown
run'and was led by Bo Foster,
Holland, Ben Wood, Palmer,
Chance Day, Lankford, Coil,
Wellman, Tomas Elguezabal and
Cody Rankin.
