Big second half carries Mustangs past Vikings
By Rick Paullus
The Heppner Mustangs
used a big second half to take a
46-12 win over the visiting
Umatilla Vikings on Friday, Sept.
20, in their first Columbia Basin
Conference game of the year.
The Mustangs (4-1 overall) led
just 13-6 at halftime, but turned
up their play a notch in the second
half, outscoring the Vikings, 33-
0, until the last minute of the
game.
The Mustangs play at
Pilot Rock on Friday, Sept. 27, at
7 p.m. for their next CBC game.
The Mustangs got off to
a good start taking over at the
Umatilla 45-yard line after forcing
a punt as Brad Adams rushed
twice for 21 yards and Chuy
Elguezabal hit Justin Botefuhr for
a 15-yard gain but they turned the
ball over on a fumble at the
fourteen.
The defense held again
with the Mustangs taking over at
the Viking thirty-seven after
another short punt and Tyler
Boyer rushed three times for 24
yards but a holding penalty
brought it back to the 20-yard line.
After a short gain on a pass to
Luke Murray, Elguezabal kept the
ball on the option for 18 yards and
a touchdown. Kyler Lovgren
kicked the extra point to make it
7-0.
Boyer intercepted a
Viking pass on their next
possession but the Mustangs
were unable to move the ball. The
teams traded punts before a punt
return for a touchdown by
Elguezabal was called back for an
illegal block giving the Mustangs
the ball at their own 28-yard line.
The Mustangs then gave
the ball to Adams as he rushed
eight times for 65 yards taking it
in from the one for the
touchdown. The kick was no good
but the Mustangs led 13-0 with
3:35 left in the first half.
The Vikings scored a
touchdown with a little over a
minute left to get within 13-6 and
the ensuing kick-off was returned
by Boyer for a touchdown but a
penalty brought the ball back to
the Mustang 23-yard line.
The Mustangs brought
the second half kick-off back to
the Viking 49-yard line and right
to work as Adams picked up four
yards, Botefuhr caught a 21 -yard
pass from Elguezabal, Adams
went for five, Boyer went for six
but a hold took it back to the
nineteen. Boyer ran for seven,
Elguezabal hit Luke Murray for a
nine-yard gain to the three where
Adams took it in for the
touchdown. Elguezabal hit
Murray for the two-point
conversion to make it 21-6.
The defense held forcing
a punt which Elguezabal brought
back 76 yards for a touchdown
and this time there were no flags.
The conversion failed and but the
Mustangs led 27-6 with 5:34 left
in the third.
After forcing another
punt, Conner Kilkenny and Brian
Smith tackled the Viking punter
for an eight-yard loss giving the
Mustangs the ball at the 26-yard
line. The Mustangs were unable
to get a first-down and gave the
ball back to the Vikings at the 17-
yard line, but Donald Adams
picked off a pass at the 20-yard
line.
The Mustangs fumbled
the ball back to the Vikings but
Botefuhr picked off another
deflected pass and returned it to
the Viking twelve. Faced with a
fourth and seven at the nine
Adams took a screen pass into the
end zone getting good blocks from
Adam Bergstrom and Brian
Haguewood. Lovgren’s kick was
good to make it 34-6 after three
quarters.
The Mustangs forced
another punt but coughed up the
ball again as the Vikings
recovered another fumble at their
own 39-yard line.
The Vikings were forced
to punt again but the snap sailed
over the head of the punter which
was scooped up by Robert
Whalen at the twenty-five who
ran it in for the touchdown to
make it 40-6.
In the Vikings next drive,
Jode Coil picked off a pass and
returned it 48 yards to the 32-yard
line. Matt Kenny ran twice for
five yards before Cody Walton
gained 25 yards on a reverse.
Walton then took it in for the
Mustangs final touchdown.
The Vikings scored a
meaningless touchdown with less
than a minute left to make the final
46-12.
Brad and Donald Adams
again led the Mustangs defense
with 19 points each with Murray
adding 18 points, Coil 15 points
and Smith and Botefuhr getting
nine points each.
Adams finished with 110
yards on 15 carries with
Elguezabal gaining 52 yards on 18
carries and completed seven of
17 passes for 66 yards. Walton
carried five times for 46 yards
and Boyer had 33 yards on seven
carries. Murray caught three
passes for 20 yards and Botefuhr
had two receptions for 36 yards.
