Stefan Matheny of Heppner
played in the 50th annual Shriners
H ospital East-W est A ll-Star
football game held at Baker City.
Matheny and 60 other
graduated seniors from Class 3A,
2A and IA schools spent a w eek
practicing and getting to know
each other before the game held
on August 10.
C oaches G reg G rant,
Heppner, and Dale Holland, lone,
were assistants for the East team.
All the coaches were faced with
not only trying to win the game
and but trying to find time for
everyone to play.
Matheny, w ho played as
a free safety and wide receiver,
gained 32 yards with his three
receptions during the game.
Coach Grant said, "Matheny was
on of the outstanding players in
the game, in both offense and
defense, and made several big
plays.” Sixteen drives brought the
East into West territory 11 times
but due to a strong West defense
the East only scored once. The
score came in the last quarter
ending the game 21-7 with the
West holding the victory for the
second straight year.

Boy Scouts camp for Terry
Harper and son Curtis of Heppner
turned into a bigger experience
than they expected. The camp,
located at Wallowa Lake, was a
place for the boys and their fathers
to enjoy time w ith each other and
the outdoors.
Rain and lightening chased the
Harpers and other campers inside
on the second day of camp. While
heading from the dining hall to the
lodge many noticed the river begin
to sw ell. Terry H arper went
outside with another camp leader
to check the situation and saw a
logjam heading tow ards the lodge.
They went in and told everyone
to get out and head to a
suspension bridge not far away.
Curtis Harper remembers the
bridge was shaking like crazy. The
older scouts, at the camp as stall',
helped the younger boys across
the bridge and made sure each boy
was accounted for. Once across
