Student sacrifices free time to create
keepsake
Some students have a hard
time finding time at home to do
homework, but not Katie Tayloe.
She worked hard at home and
during recesses to create a
beautiful keepsake book for Mrs.
D anielson. At the Heppner
Elementary School assembly on
Tuesday, May 28, Katie
presented the gift and read the
book to the audience. This young
author, through the eyes of a
child, explained the many jobs
Mrs. Danielson does for Heppner
Elementary School. The last page
o f the book states, “ Mrs.
Danielson is a good principal. She
is not going to be here next year
and that makes me sad.” Katie's
book is sure to be treasured for
years to come.

The palace hotel, pictured here in the foreground on the right,
was the prominent structure in Heppner in the early 1900’s.
Jack Ends of Monument was surely glad to be greeted by this
beautiful structure when he arrived in Heppner with his load of wool.
This article was written in an early 1900’s edition of the Heppner
Gazette: Jack Ends came in Monday morning with a six horse
team from Monument, loaded with 5500 pounds o f wool. Owing
to the rain and bad roads the trip was a hard one. Some o f the
difficulties o f freighting can be realized from the fact that Mr
Ends was eight days in making this trip o f 55 miles.
The April 26, 1917 edition of the Gazette featured a story
about the leasing of the hotel’s basement: C.L. Curran o f The Dalles,
who recently installed a bowling alley in the north room o f the
Palace Hotel basement, has leased the entire basement floor space,
with the exception o f one back room, and he will soon put in new
billiard and pool tables. Although the billiard and pool room will
be separated from the room in which the bowling alleys are
situated, the two will be connected by large doors. Both places
will be equipped with soft drink fountains and confectionery,
cigars and tobacco will be handled.
The Lexington Grange
will hold a meeting on Monday,
June 17, at 6:30 p.m. The evening
will begin with a potluck and the
meeting will follow.
Molly Rhea from Pioneer
Memorial Home Health will speak
on the hospice program. The
public is invited to attend.
The Grange picnic to
Cutsforth Park has been
postponed until Sunday, July 7.
