The Heppner Mustang JV
baseball team banged out 16 hits
in beating the visiting Wahtonka
Eagles, 19-0, in five innings on
Thursday, May 2, to improve to
7 and 1 on the year. The Mus­
tangs play the LaGrande frosh on
Friday, May 10, in a doublehead­
er at home beginning at 2 p.m.
They will finish out the season
with a home game against Pilot
Rock on Monday, May 13, at
4:30 p.m.
Jode Coil and Kiel Naims
both walked to lead off the first
and both came home on a wild
pitch to give the Mustangs an
early 2-0 lead. Chuy Elguezabal
had an infield hit and later scored
on a Ben Turrell fielder’s choice
to make it 3-0 after one.
In the second. Coil and
Naims both singled and scored on
a Brian Gutierrez triple. Gutierrez
scored as Luke Murray reached
on an error. Elguezabal tripled to
score Murray and scored as Josh
Gutierrez grounded out, Turrell
singled, John Franswa reached on
an error, Aaron Lueck had an in­
field single and Coil scored two
with another single to make it 10-
0.
The Mustangs added two
more in the third when Brian
Gutierrez walked, Donald Adams
reached on a fielder’s choice and
both scored on a Turrell single.
They put the game further out
o f reach in the fourth when
Franswa reached on an error, Coil
singled and Naims was hit by a
pitch. Murray scored two with a
two-out single and Adams scored
another with a single. Josh
Gutierrez had an RBI single,
Turrell scored two more with a
double and Franswa scored an­
other with a double to make it 19-
0.
Josh Gutierrez went three in­
nings to pick up the win, striking
out four and allowing an infield
single with Coil pitching the fi­
nal two innings, giving up no hits
and striking out four.
Terrell led the way at the
plate, going three for four with
fiv* RBJst'Cofl went three for
fouf with three runs scored and
two RBIs, Elguezabal went two
for two, Lueck went two for four,
Murray had three RBIs and Brian
and Josh Gutierrez each had two
RBIs. *
Each Mustang had at least
one hit and the defense was flaw­
less, with no errors.

The Heppner Mustangs base­
ball team scored two runs in the
bottom of the seventh, but came
up one run short as they lost to
the visiting Condon Blue Devils,
5-4, in Columbia Basin Confer­
ence play. The Mustangs dropped
to 7 and 2 in the CBC East divi­
sion and 13 and 5 overall. They
tied with Condon for first place
in the conference, but the Blue
Devils hold the tiebreaker, hav­
ing beaten the Mustangs two of
three times this season.
The Mustangs play a double-
header at Weston-McEwen on
Saturday, May 11, beginning at
11 a.m. and host Umatilla on
Tuesday, May 14, at 4:30 p.m. to
finish up the regular season.
The Blue Devils scored two
runs in the top of the first, but the
Mustangs came back to tie it up
on Stefan M atheny’s single,
Michael McCabe’s single, Billy
G ates’ RBI single and Brad
Adams’ RBI single.
The Blue Devils scored a run
in the third and two more in the
fourth and made it stand up until
the seventh when the Mustangs
mounted a rally.
Chuy Elguezabal walked
with one out. Matheny was hit by
a pitch, McCabe walked and
Gates singled to score two, but
they couldn’t get anymore and
took the loss.
Gates was two for three with
three RBIs and Matheny went
two for three.

WCCC ladies
evening league set
According to a spokesperson,
WCCC received an overwhelm­
ing positive response to the pro­
posal of a Willow Creek Coun­
try Club ladies evening league at
a meeting held last Thursday.
Play days are set for Thursday
evenings at 6:30 p.m. and will run
similar to Tuesdays (participation
is not required every week). Golf­
ers will sign up as hostesses and
will be in charge of the play for
the evening. The league is open
to all women, 18 years of age or
older, who are members of the
Willow Creek Country Club.
Those interested in partici­
pating may show up Thursday
evenings, beginning May 9, by
6:15 p.m., as play will start
promptly at 6:30 p.m.

Eleven golfers hit the course
for a Chapman Round following
the meeting. First place went to
Mary Kincaid and Luvilla Son-

The Heppner Mustang base­
ball team had 19 hits and scored
25 runs, beating the visiting
Stanfield Tigers, 11-1 and 14-3,
on Saturday, May 4. Both games
ended after five innings due to the
10-run rule. The wins boosted the
Mustangs’ Columbia Basin Con­
ference East division record to 9
and 2 and their overall record to
15 and 5.
The Mustangs had a double-
header at Weston-McEwen on
Saturday, May 11, and a single
game at home against Umatilla
on Tuesday, May 14, to close out
the regular season.
The Mustangs took a 3-0 lead
after one in the opener as Chuy
Elguezabal and Stefan Matheny
walked and scored on a Brad
Adams triple. Billy Gates then hit
a sacrifice fly to score Adams.
The Tigers scored a run in the
second but the Mustangs came
back with three more in the third
as Michael McCabe tripled and
scored on Adams’ single, Gates
walked and both came home on
Travis Bellamy’s double.
The Mustangs scored five
more in the fourth as Donald
Adams walked and ended up
scoring on a passed ball.
Elguezabal walked, Brad Adams
hit a two-out two-run homerun
and Gates walked. Bellamy sin­
gled, Kelly Paullus had an RBI
single and Bellamy ended up
scoring on an error to make it 11 -
1.
Gates went the distance, giv­
ing up only an infield single,
three walks and striking out 11.
Brad Adams led the way at the
plate, going three for three with
five RBIs, with Bellamy going
two for three with two RBIs.
E lguezabal and Gates each
scored two runs.
The Mustangs wasted little
time in the second game, scoring
seven runs in the first inning.
Elguezabal walked, Matheny tri­
pled, McCabe hit a homerun,
Brad Adams walked, Bellamy
was hit by a pitch and Paullus
moved both runners up with a
sacrifice bunt. Josh Winters was
hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Brian Gutierrez had an RBI sin­
gle, Elguezabal forced in a run by
getting hit by a pitch, Matheny
had an RBI single and another run
scored as McCabe reached on an
error.
In the second. Gates doubled
and Bellamy homered to right
field. Paullus, W inters and
Gutierrez each single, Elguezabal
reached on a fielder’s choice,
McCabe forced in a run with a
walk and Adams cleared the
bases with a double to make it 13-
0.
The Tigers scored two runs
in the third but the Mustangs
came back with a run in the fourth
as Matheny doubled and scored
on McCabe's single.
Matheny picked up the win
on the mound, going the distance,
giving up three hits and two
walks, while striking out four. He
also led the way at the plate, go­
ing three for three with two RBIs.
McCabe went two for three
with five RBIs. Gutierrez went
two for two, scored twice and had
an RBI. Bellamy scored two runs
and had two RBIs, Adams had
three RBIs and Elguezabal scored
two runs.
