Mustang JV rally falls short

The Heppner Mustang
JV baseball team rallied from a
6-1 deficit to get within one but
couldn't get the tying run across
and fell to the Pendleton Frosh,
t 6-5, on M onday, A pril 22 in
Pendleton. The Mustangs suf­
fered their first loss o f the sea­
son as their record fell to 4 and 1
on the year, but a bigger loss oc­
cu rred w hen fresh m an N ick

The Mustangs played a
doubleheader at Hermiston on
Thursday, April 25, and then trav­
eled to Riverside on Monday,
April 29.

first run for the Mustangs in the
. first inning when he walked, stole
second and scored as Josh Win-

The Bucks came back
with four runs in the first and two
more in the second to take a 6-1
lead that held up until the top of
the sixth inning.

Gutierrez was hit by a pitch, went
to second on a passed ball and
scored on a Ben Turrell single.
John Franswa walked, Connor
Kilkenny was hit by a pitch, load­
ing the bases and Jode Coil sin­
gled to score two more. Kilkenny
scored as Coil stole second to
make it 6-5, but the inning ended
with Coil on third base.

Naims walked with one out, stole
second and third, but was left
stranded as the Mustangs couldn’t
get the hit they needed.
Brian Gutierrez went the
distance, scattering seven hits,
just one after the second inning,
while striking out eight and walk­
ing four.
Coil went four for four
with two RBIs. Christman went
one for two and scored a run,

The Heppner Mustangs
baseball team banged out 13 hits,
including six for extra bases, and
took care o f the W eston-
McEwen Tigerscots, 13-1, in five
innings in Heppner, on Tuesday,
April 23. The first place Mustangs
improved to 5 and 1 in the CBC
East division and 11 and 4 over­
all. A league doubleheader in
Heppner against Stanfield is up
next, on Saturday, May 4, begin­
ning at 11 a.m.
The Mustangs gave up a
run in the top o f the first but wast­
ed little time in getting it back as
Chuy Elguezabal led off by beat­
ing out an infield single and Stefan
Matheny hit a homerun, giving
H eppner the lead. M ichael
McCabe singled, went to second
on a passed ball and scored on a
single by Brad A dam s, who
scored on a triple by Kelly Paullus
to make it 4-1.
In the second, Donald
Adams and Elguezabal walked
and Matheny and McCabe each
had RBI singles to make it 6 -1.
The M ustangs put the

Mustangs sweep Viking double header

Excellent pitching and
good hitting led the Heppner Mus­
tangs to a sw eep at U m atilla
against the Vikings by 10-0 in five
innings and 12-2 in six innings on
Friday, April 26.
The Mustangs remained
in first place in the CBC east di­
vision with a 7 and 1 record and
13 and 4 overall. They will host
Stanfield for a doubleheader on
Saturday, May 4. The team will
travel to Pilot Rock for a single
game on Tuesday, May 7, begin­
ning at 4:30 p.m.
The M ustangs led 1-0
after one in the first game as
Chuy Elguezabal led off with an
infield single, stole second and
scored on a throwing error as he
was stealing third.
They added four more in
the second as Brad Adams dou­
bled, Travis Bellamy had an RBI
double, Kelly Paullus had an RBI
single and Josh Winters singled.
Elguezabal scored Paullus on a
sacrifice fly and Stefan Matheny
had an RBI single.
In the third, Adams hit a
homerun, Bellamy doubled and
Paullus walked. Winters had an
RBI double and Donald Adams
had an RBI single to make it 8-0.
The Mustangs added a
run in the fourth as M ichael
McCabe singled and scored on
Brad Adams' double. They add­
ed another run in the fifth as
Paullus singled, went to third on
Kiel Naim s' sacrifice bunt and
scored as Ben Turrell struck out,
but the pitch got away from the
catcher.
M cCabe pitched three
innings of one-hit ball while strik­
ing out six with just one walk to
pick up the win. Billy Gates
pitched two innings, allowing one
hit, one walk and two strikeouts.
Brad Adams went three
for three with two doubles, a
homerun and two RBIs. Bellamy
went two for three with an RBI
and Winters and Paullus each
went two for two with an RBI as
the Mustangs banged out 13 hits,
six o f them for extra bases. The
defense was solid also, with no
errors.
In the second game, the
Mustangs scored a run in the top
o f the first as Matheny doubled
and came around to score on a
passed ball, but the Vikings scored
two runs in the bottom half on
their only hit of the game.
The Mustangs tied it up
in the third as Luke Murray tri­
pled and scored on Elguezabal's
sacrifice fly. They took the lead
in the fourth when Gates singled,
Adams had an RBI double and
Bellamy an RBI single. Paullus
reached as his squeeze bunt hit
Bellamy for an out, stole second
and scored on Elguezabal’s sin­
gle to make it 5-2.
In the fifth , M cCabe
reached on an error, stole second
and third and scored on Bellamy’s
single.
The Mustangs blew the
game open in the sixth as Paullus
reached on an error, then stole
second and third, Murray had an
RBI double and E lguezabal
reached on a fielder’s choice.
McCabe hit a mammoth homerun
into the trees in left field, Adams
walked and scored as Bellamy
reached on an error and Winters
had an RBI single to make it 12-
2 .
Elguezabal went four in­
nings to pick up the win, allowing
one questionable hit, striking out
eight and walking three. Winters
pitched two innings in relief, strik­
ing out four and allowing no hits.
Bellamy went two for
three with three RBIs, McCabe
and Elguezabal each went two for
four with two RBIs and Murray
went two for two with an RBI.

and 11 -5 on Thursday, April 25, in
Hermiston, improving their record
to 6 and 1 on the year. A home
game against Wahtonka is next,
on Thursday, May 2 at 4:30 p.m.
The M ustangs took an
early 1 -0 lead as Jode Coil led off
with a double and scored on Kiel
Naims' single. They added five
more in the second as Ben Turrell
and John Franswa singled. Coil
reached on an error with two out
to score Turrell, Naims had an
RBI single, and Luke Murray
scored two w ith a triple and
scored on a Josh Gutierrez sin­
gle.
The Bulldogs scored a
run in the fourth, but the Mustangs
got it back as Murray singled,
stole second and scored on Josh
W inters’ single. The Bulldogs
scored three more in the sixth and
another run in the seventh, but the
Mustangs held on for the win.
Coil picked up the win on
the mound, going six innings, giv­
ing up five hits and a walk, and
three earned runs while striking
out six. Murray went two for three
with two RBIs. Naims went two
for four with two RBIs and Coil
scored twice.
The M ustangs jum ped

and Winters singled. Gutierrez
brought two home with a single.

The Bulldogs scored sin­

the Mustangs added two insur­
ance runs in the seventh as
Franswa reached on a fielder's
choice, Aaron Lueck walked and
Coil had an RBI double. Naims
sacrificed Lueck home to make
it 11-5.
Gutierrez picked up the
win on the mound, going five and
one-third innings, scattering six
hits, giving up one earned run
while striking out four and walk­
ing just one. Winters got two outs
in the sixth to end a Bulldog rally
and Adams pitched a scoreless
seventh.
Winters went three for
four, scoring twice, Adams and
Coil each went two for five,
Kilkenny went one for three with
three RBIs and Gutierrez went
one for three with two RBIs.
