lone track sweeps Umatilla Invitational

The lone track teams
won the Invitational track meet in
Umatilla on April 9.
Brad Burright led the
bo y ’s team, w inning three
individual events. He was on the
winning 4x100m relay team as
well. Brad placed 1st in the long
jump with a jump of 21' 1/4". He
also finished 1st in the 110m
hurdles at 15.04 and 1st in the
300m hurdles with a time of
41.69. Andrew Rietmann won the
100m dash ending at 11.63, and
the 200m dash with 23.84. Cayle
Krebs finished 1 st in the shot put
with a throw of 39’8". He also
placed 2nd in the discus throwing
113’4" and 4th in the 100m dash
with a time of 12.65.
Cody Bergstrom finished
1st in the 1500m run with a time
of 5:17.66, in addition to taking 2nd
in the 3000m run with a time of
12:21.66. Derick Campbell placed
1st in the 400m with a time of
1:02.65 and 6th in shot put with a
throw of 32’8". Ashley Roberts
finished 2nd in the triple jump
jumping 32’7". He then took 2nd
in the javelin with a throw of
125’ 1/2", and took 5th in the 200m
dash with a time of 25.08. Tim
Doherty placed 2nd in the 800m
run with a time of 2:47.31 and 3rd
in the 400m run with a time of
1:07.72. Mike Radie finished 3rd
in the 100m dash with a time of
12.21 and 3rd in the 200m dash
with a time of 24.77.
Austin Arabella took 3rd
in the 800m run with a time of
3:08.65. Til Tullis took 4th in the
110m hurdles with a time of 20.21
and 4th in the 390m hurdles with
a time of 50.53. He also placed
6th in the longjump with a jump
of 16’8". Karl Morgan placed 5th
in the javelin, ihrowing 91’3", and
6th in the 11 On hurdles with a time
of 25.25. The 4x100m relay team
of Radie, Rietmann, Krebs, and
Burright took 1 st place with a time
of 45.21. The 4x400m relay team
o f Reitmann, Campbell, Radie
and Morgan took 2nd with a time
of 4:09.16.
Dianna McElligott got
the girl’s team going by placing
1 st in the 400m dash with a time
of 1:04.26 and l 51 in the 200m
dash with a time of 28.30. Kim
Morris took 1 st in the 1500m run
with a time of 7:01.93 and placed
2nd in the high jump with a jump
of 4 ’4". Jaysi Bennetto finished
1 st in the 3000m run with a time
of 16:51,3rd in the 300m hurdles
with 59.31, and 4th in the 100m
hurdles with 20.25. K. Peterson
took 2nd in the 1500m Run with a
time of 7:53.84.
Cyndi Heagy finished
2nd in the 100m dash with a time
of 14.10 and placed 2nd in the
200m dash with a time of 29.12.
Amellia Peck took 2nd in the
100m hurdles with a time of
18.59, 2nd in the 300m hurdles
with a time of 53.52 and 3rd in
the javelin with a throw of 91’6".
Eva Chitty placed 3rd in the pole
vault with a jump of 6 ’6" and
ended 5th'in the longjump with a
jump of 12’8". Barbara Holland
placed 3rd in the high jump with
4’4" and took 4th in the discus
with a throw of 66’8". She also
placed 5th in the javelin with a
throw o f 74’ 1". Brittany Day
placed 3rd in the 100m hurdles
with a time of 20.10, 5th in the
300m hurdles with a time o f
1:01.38, and 6th in the longjump
with a jump of 11’ 1", Missy Baker
took 4th in both the 100m dash
with a time of 14.94, and in the
200m dash with a time of 31.91.
She went on to place 5th in the
discus with a throw of 66’2", and
6th in the shot put with a throw
of 25’9". The 4x100m relay team
of
McElligott, Heagy, Chitty
and Peck placed 1st with a time
of 54.90. The 4x400m relay team
of Heagy, Holland, Morris and
Chitty took 2nd with a time of
5:02.12.
Mustang JVs blank Eagles

The Htppner Mustang JV
baseball team exploded for a 19-
0 win overthe Wahtonka Eaglfes
on Friday, April 11 in The Dalles,
improvinj their record to 3-0 on
the year. Nick Christman went
three innings on the mound to get
the win,striking out six while al
lowing (ust one hit and one walk.
Jode Coil pitched one inning, al
lowing one hit while striking out
ate. Josh Gutierrez pitched a per
fect fifth inning, striking out all
three batters faced.
Christman and Coil led off
with walks and came around to
score on Brian Gutierrez’s dou
ble. Kiel Naims walked and both
G utierrez and N airns came
around to score on wild pitches
to make it 4-0 after one.
In the second, Christman led
off with a single and came around
to score on a Gutierrez single.
Chuy Elguezaba! singled and Josh
Gutierrez brought both runners
home with a single, bringing the
score to 7-0.
The Mustangs put the game
away in the third as Christman
doubled and scored on Coil's dou
ble. Brian Gutierrez had an rbi sin
gle, Elguezabal walked, Naims
reached on an error and Josh
Gutierrez reached on a fielder’s
choice. Ben Turrell hit a bases-
clearing double to make it 12-0
after three.
In the fourth, Christman sin
gled, went to second on a wild
pitch and scored as'Coil reached
on an error. Elguezabal singled to
score Coil, making it 15-0 after
four.
The Mustangs added four
more in the fifth as Turrell
reached on an error and scored.
John Franswa doubled, Aaron
Lueck beat out an infield single
and Christman reached on a field
er's choice. Coil then had an rbi
groundout, Brian Gutierrez scored
two more with a triple and came
home on Naims’ single to make
the score 19-0.
Brian Gutierrez went four for
five with six rbi’s and scored three
runs. Christman went three for
four, scoring five times. Turrell
went two for four with three rbi’s.
Coil had three rbi’s and scored
three runs. Josh Gutierrez had two
rbi’s.
The Mustangs banged out 15
hits with all nine players getting
at least one hit.

Tournament. Eleven area schools
participated in the tournament,

In the boys’ bracket, Aaron
Tworek lost to Roger Bauman of
Weston-McEwen, 4-8. Tworek
defeated Josh Paine of Mac-Hi,
8-1, in his second match. Colin
McElligott lost to Brett Brown of
Sherman County, 3-8. McElligott
fought hard against Bryon Eddy
of Umatilla but was unable to take

Megan Orr of Heppner and
Blake Harrison of Eugene will be
among the top 72 free throw
shooters, ages 8-13, who will
compete in the Elks “Hoop Shoot”
National Free Throw Contest.
Boy and girl shooters from all
over the country will meet this
Saturday, April 20, at Western
New England C ollege in
Springfield, Massachusetts to vie
for the national championship.
Saturday’s competition will
showcase three age groups, 8-9,
10-11 and 12-13, with each
contest consisting o f 25 free
throws - 10 in round one and 15
in round two, with ties being
resolved in five-shot shoot-offs.
At stake is the chance to claim
one of six spots on the Elks “Hoop
Shoot” plaque in the Naismith
M emorial Basketball Hall o f
Fame.
In addition to Saturday’s
com petition, the youngsters’
weekend will include a reception
at the N aism ith M emorial
Basketball Hall o f Fame, the
“Breakfast of Champions,” and an
awards banquet featuring Stacy
Frese-Huber, former member of
the Utah Starzz and past Elks
“Hoop Shoot" national champ.

The lone Cardinals track
teams placed third at the Condon
Invitational on April 13.
Brad Burright finished
with three first place titles and
Andrew Rietmann took two first
place wins. Bumght won the long
jump with a jump of 19’7". He also
took 1 st in the 110m hurdles with
a swift 14.75, and 1st in the 300m
hurdles finishing at 40.07.
Rietmann won 1st in the 100m
dash with a time of 11.09 and 1st
in the 200m dash with 22.91. Mike
Radie tied for 3rd in the 100m
dash with time of 11.55. Ashley
Roberts placed 6th in the triple
jump with a jump of 36’ 1". Cayle
Krebs took 6th in the shot put with
38’ 10". The 4x400 relay team of
Radie, Roberts, Rietmann and
Derick Campbell finished 1st with
3:46.30.
Diana McElligott led the
lone girls, taking 1st in the 400m
dash with a time of 1:03.10. She
also finished 2nd in the 200m dash
with 13.05. Amellia Peck took 2nd
in the 300m hurdles with a time
of 52.96 and 5th in the discus with
6’8". Cyndi Heagy took 3rd in the
200m dash ending at 28.99 and
finished 4th in the 400m dash at
1:04.51.

The Heppner Mustang JV
baseball team scored two runs in
the bottom of the fifth inning to
break a 3-3 tie and went on to
beat the visiting Pendleton frosh,
5-3, on Monday, April 8, to im
prove their record to 2-0 on the
year.
Brian Gutierrez went the dis
tance on the mound, scattering
seven hits while striking out nine
and walking just one batter.
The Bucks took a 1-0 lead
after one but the Mustangs came
back to tie it up in the second
when Kiel Nairns walked and
came around to score on a Ben
Turrell double.
The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead
in the third when Nick Christman
doubled and scored on Jode Coil’s
single, but the Bucks came back
with two runs in the fourth to re
take the lead.
In the bottom half o f the
fourth, Luke Murray singled, stole
second, went to third as Josh
Gutierrez reached on an error and
scored on a Ben Turrell single.
The Mustangs broke the tie
in the fifth as Coil singled, Brian
Gutierrez was hit by a pitch and
both came around to score on
Murray’s single.
The Mustangs are scheduled
next to play the Hermiston frosh
at home on Friday, April 19 at 4
pm.

Mustangs split a doubleheader
with Condon Blue Devils

After a big win in the first game, a doubleheader, the Heppner
Mustang baseball team lost a hard-fought second game, 9-7, in eight
innings. This opened the Columbia Basin Conference play on Satur
day. April 13 in Condon. The Mustangs got a complete game, two-hit,
seven-strikeout performance from Michael McCabe, and banged out
16 hits to take a 12-0 win in six innings in the opener.
The Mustangs’ record moved to 7-4 on the year. They will play
another crucial doubleheader with Pilot Rock on Saturday, April 20, in
Heppner beginning at 11 a.m.
The Mustangs scored two runs in the first inning when Stefan
Matheny singled, McCabe hit into a fielder’s choice, Billy Gates
walked. Brad Adams had an rbi single and Kelly Paullus had an rbi
single.
They added another run in the third when Matheny singled, went
to second on Gates' single and scored on Adams' double.
In the fifth, Chuy Elguezabal doubled and came around to score
on an error, McCabe doubled and Gates homered to make it 6-0.
They blew the game open in the sixth when Josh Winters tripled,
Elguezabal had an rbi single, McCabe had an rbi double, Gates and
Brad Adams walked, Travis Bellamy scored two with a double and
Donald Adams had an rbi single to make it 12-0.
The game ended after six innings because of the 10-run rule.
Gates had two hits and two rbi’s while McCabe had two doubles
and one rbi. Brad Adams had two hits and two rbi's, Elguezabal had
two hits and an rbi and Matheny had two hits.
In the second game, the Mustangs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead
as Elguezabal singled, McCabe doubled and both came home on Brad
Adams' triple.
The Blue Devils tied it up in their half of the first, but the Mus
tangs came back with two more in the top of the second. Bellamy and
Brian Gutierrez singled. Winters doubled to score Bellamy and
Elguezabal had an rbi single.
Condon scored a run in the bottom of the second. After a score
less third, the Mustangs added a run when Bellamy reached on an
error and came around to score on an Elguezabal single.
The Blue Devils came back with three runs in the bottom half to
take their first lead of the game, but McCabe tied it at 6-6 on a deep
homerun to centerfield in the fifth.
Condon scored a run in the bottom of the sixth. Their lead was
short-lived, however, as Gates led off the seventh with his second
homerun of the day to tie it up and send the game into extra innings.
The Mustangs were unable to score in the top of the eighth and
Condon got a two-run homerun from Randy Camine to get the win.
Elguezabal had three hits and two rbi’s, while Bellamy, Gutierrez
and McCabe each had two hits as the Mustangs out-hit the Blue Dev
ils, 12-9.
