______ Items of Health - Tobacco
v e w tlon
Kick Butts Day is today, Wednesday, April 3, and is for anyone
who is interested in quitting smoking, particularly junior high/high school
students and young adults.
Think about your school and the kids you see every day. Now
think about the fact that roughly one out of three of those kids who
start smoking will die prematurely from a tobacco-related illness. This
is the kind of information that the tobacco companies’ advertising and
marketing won’t tell you.
Some general facts about smoking:
- Smoking kills more than 400,000 Americans each year - more
than alcohol, cocaine, crack, heroin, homicide, suicide, car accidents,
fires and AIDS combined.
- Each day roughly 5,000 kids (under 18) try smoking for the first
time, and more than 2,000 kids become new regular, daily smokers.
- Smokers lose an average of 12 years of life due to their habit.
- The chemical nicotine found in cigarettes and other tobacco
products is an addictive drug, which is why it is so hard for people to
quit using tobacco once they start. Nicotine is also a deadly poison
used in many bug sprays. It is so potent that one drop (70 mg) in its
liquid form will kill an average adult. Evidence indicates that tobacco
companies manipulate the nicotine level in cigarettes to hook smokers.
Disgusting but true:
- Lung cancer, throat cancer, heart disease, stroke and emphysema
are just some of the painful, life-threatening diseases linked with
smoking. Smoking also is associated with cancers o f the mouth,
pharynx, esophagus, pancreas, cervix, kidney and bladder.
- Smoking limits the amount of oxygen in the blood, reducing your
stamina for sports and other physical activities.
- Smoking turns your teeth and fingernails yellow, makes your
hair, clothes and breath smell gross and causes premature wrinkling
of your skin.
Youth smoking rates:
- Almost 90 percent of adults who have ever been regular smokers
began smoking at or before age 18.
•
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report smoking
rates for students in grades 9-12 increased from 27.5 percent in 1991
to 34.8 percent in 1999. For State specific tobacco facts visit the
Centers for D isease Control and P revention’s Web site at
www.cdec.gov/nccdphp/osh/data.htm or www.tobaccofreekids.org.
Tobacco advertising and marketing to kids:
- The tobacco industry spends over $8.2 billion a year, more than
$22.5 million a day, on advertising and marketing to attract new smokers
and to keep people puffing away.
- A study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute
found that teens are more likely to be influenced to smoke by cigarette
advertising than they are by peer pressure.
- A rapid and unprecedented increase in the smoking initiation
rate of adolescent girls subsequent to the launch in the late 1960s of
women’s cigarette brands like Virginia Slims was documented in a
1994 article in the Journal of the American Medical.
It’s something to think about.
For more information about the effects of smoking and/or how to
quit, contact me at the Morrow County Health Department, 676-5421.

Elks Club essay winning entries published
Kara Clay of lone and Krystal Naims of Heppner each won first
place in separate categories in the Heppner Elks Club contest, “What
Does the Flag of the United States Stand For?” Following are their
essays:
By Kara Clay, lone Elementary School
To me, the flag means freedom, victory, peace and hard work.
Freedom is how we got the nation and therefore, the flag. It is
very important to all Americans and the flag is too.
Victory earned us the flag. If we didn’t have victory in the
Revolutionary War we might not have the nation and, of course, flag.
Our nation is a peace-loving nation. Even at this time of war we
are seeking peace. The flag is the result of having our nation.
Hard work got us the flag and the whole nation. Betsy Ross did
hard work to make the first flag. The Continental Army worked hard
to win the Revolutionary War. The country's leaders work hard to
protect citizens. The citizens work hard every day on all sorts of things.
Those are all very important meanings but not the most important.
The most important is... US.
By Krystal Nairns. eighth grade, Heppner Jr./Sr. High School
There is no better symbol of our country's values and traditions
than the flag of the United States of America. Our flag stands for
freedom, justice, unity, and respect.
On September 11, a terrible tragedy struck our nation and now
there are flags waving in the air everywhere to show that our people
stand for liberty and justice for all.
With bright red. white and blue colors, and its stars and stripes, the
American Flag is a symbol of our nation's freedom. It is known around
the world as the “stars and stripes flag." The stars stand for the 50
states of our union, and the stripes represent not only the 13 original
colonies, but also the purity of our nation.
So when you look up and see the American Flag, remember that
it is the flag of our country, standing for freedom, justice, unity and
respect.
