PLANTING

Heppner Ranger District
On March 19,2002, Heppner
District Ranger, Andrei Rykoff,
decided to implement the Flatiron
Fire Tree Planting project on the
Heppner Ranger District, locat­
ed in Wheeler County Oregon at
T.7S., R.25E, Sections 5 and 6;
W.M. surveyed.
The purpose of this project is
to mitigate the adverse effects of
the August 2001 Flatiron fire by
planting a mix of Ponderosa Pine
and Douglas-fir. Reforesting the
site now, right after the area
burned, will ensure that trees are
established much quicker than if
they were allowed to seed in by
themselves.

On March 20,2002, Heppner
District Ranger, Andrei Rykoff,
decided to implement the Access
to Private Land - Joe Hardin
Project on the Heppner Ranger
District. This project will allow
Mr. Hardin access to his private
land. It will entail crossing Forest
Service land for approximately
1/8 of a mile. The proposed road
would start from open Forest Ser­
vice Road 2500130 and will stay
open until crossing into private
land. The road will be located on
the middle to top of the slope and
is not in or near any streams or
riparian areas. The road will be
constructed with pit run material
to help with siltation. Cross drains
will be constructed to deal with
any drainage needs.

Riverside Pirates

The Heppner M ustangs’
baseball team moved to 2-0 on the
young season by edging the visit­
ing Riverside Pirates, 2-0, in a
pitcher’s duel on Tuesday, March
19.
Michael McCabe picked up
the win on the mound, striking out
eight, walking four and scattering
three hits in five innings. Conor
Kilkenny pitched two perfect in­
nings to earn the save with three
strikeouts.
The Mustangs picked up a
run in the first as Stefan Matheny
was hit by a pitch, stole second,
went to third on a Kelly Paullus
ground-out and scored on a
McCabe single. In the third,
Paullus walked and came around
to score on another McCabe sin­
gle.
McCabe went two for three
and had the only hits for the Mus­
tangs.
The M ustangs travel to
Colfax, WA, for a doubleheader
on Saturday, March 30, and host
Mac-Hi on Tuesday, April 2, at 4
p.m.

Schools Plus Community
Credit Union is offering three
$500 scholarships to graduating
seniors and/or post secondary
students who attend an accredited
state or private institute of higher
education and who are members
or have family members of the
credit union. These scholarships
are being offered in memory of
Elsa Hagen, a long-time educator
in Pendleton schools and a
charter member of the Umatilla
Morrow Schools Federal Credit
Union, now called Schools Plus
Community Credit Union.
Applications are available at
all three branches of the credit
union, and in the counselor’s
office in high schools.
Applications must be returned on
or before 5 p.m., Wednesday,
April 10. Recipients will be

Litter pick-up

The Department of Transpor­
tation highway litter pickup for the
St. Patrick's Celebration was the
most comprehensive and thorough
of all to date, according to John
Edmundson, coordinator.
With the efforts of the volun­
teers, businesses and residents,
over 60 bags of roadside litter
were collected and disposed of.
Participating organizations
included the Heppner Chamber of
Commerce, the Heppner Elemen­
tary School staff, the Heppner
High School Honor Society, the
Morrow County Employees
Union, Central Red Apple Mar­
ket, Shamrock Lanes, the Lexing­
ton Baptist Church, Stop Oregon
Litter and Vandalism (SOLV),
Heppner T.V., the Heppner Ga­
zette-Times and the Oregon Dept.
ofTransportation.
In total, around 200 area citi­
zens helped to get the highways
spiffed up and litter free for the
celebration.
