Mustang JVs outscore Rockets
Mustangs beat Huskies, 15-1

The Rockets scored three
runs in the bottom of the second,
but the Mustangs came back w ith
six runs in the top of the fourth.
Adams walked; Kilkenny singled;
Kiel Naims had an rbi single; Josh
Gutierrez walked to load the
bases; Ben Turrell walked to force
in a run, as did Christman; Coil
drove in two with a single, and
Adams had an rbi single to make
it 12-3.
The Rockets scored three in
the bottom of the fourth before it
got too dark to continue.
Adams went two for two
with three rbi and scored three
runs. Kilkenny went two for four
with two rbi and Coil went two
for four with two rbi. Brian
Gutierrez went two for four and
pitched the first two innings with
relief help from Josh Gutierrez.
The Heppner Mustang JV
baseball team outscored the Pilot
Rock Rockets, 12-6, on Thursday,
March 14, in Pilot Rock. The
game was called after four innings
because of darkness.
The Mustangs jumped out
early as Jode Coil and Brian
Gutierrez singled and Donald
Adams w alked to load the bases.
Conor Kilkenny singled to drive
in two runs and Josh Gutierrez hij
a sacrifice tly to make it 3-0.
In the top o f the second,
Aaron Lueck led off with an in­
field single; Nick Christman
reached on an error; Brian
Gutierrez singled and Adams
knocked in two runs with a sin­
gle, and then came around to score
on an error.
Mustang JVs rally to beat Mac-Hi, 15-12

Rallying from an 11-2 deficit,
the Heppner Mustang JV base­
ball team outlasted the Mac-Hi
Pioneers, 15-12, in a cold snow­
storm on Monday, March 18, in
M ilton-Freewater. The M us­
ta n g s’ next games are in
LaGrande on Friday. April 5, with
a doubleheader against the Tiger
freshmen beginning at 2 p.m.
The Mustangs trailed 2-0 af­
ter one, but came back with a run
in the second as Kiel Naims sin­
gled and came around to score on
a Josh Gutierrez double.
The Pioneers led 3-1 when
the Mustangs added another run
in the third as Nick Christman sin­
gled, stole second and came
around to score as Brian Gutierrez
reached on an error.
As the snow fell harder, the
ball and ground became wet and
the Pioneers were able to score
eight runs to take an 11-2 lead.
The Mustangs then came to life,
scoring seven runs of their own
in the top of the fourth. Conor
Kilkenny led off with a single;
Naims and Josh Gutierrez walked
to load the bases; Christman
drove in two with a single; Jode
Coil walked; Brian Gutierrez had
a two-rbi double; Luke Murray
had an rbi double, and Kilkenny
cleared the bases with a triple.
The Mustangs took the lead
in the fifth as Naims walked. Josh
Gutierrez singled and both came
home on Turrell's double. Turrell
later scored on an error to make
it 12-11.
In the meantime. Coil came
on in relief and retired the Pio­
neers in order in the fourth, fifth
and sixth innings.
The Mustangs added a run in
the sixth as Murray led off with a
single and came around to score
as Naims grounded out. They
added two more insurance runs
in the seventh as Coil singled,
Brian Gutierrez walked and both
scored on a Murray double.
The Pioneers added a run in
the bottom of the seventh, but the
Mustangs played good defense to
end the rally and take the win.
Murray led the way at the
plate, going four for five with two
doubles and three rbi. Josh
Gutierrez went three for three
with a double and Turrell went
two for four with three rbi.
Kilkenny and Christman each
went two for four with two rbi,
Brian Gutierrez had three rbi and
Naims scored three runs.

HHS sets parent-teacher conferences
Heppner High School will
hold parent-teacher conferences
for all students in the gym on
Thursday, April 4, from 5-9 p.m.
Students in grades seven-10 will
have student-led conferences w ith
their parents on Friday, April 5,
from 7:30-11:30 a.m.

The Heppner Mustang base­
ball team took advantage of al­
most every base runner as they
beat the visiting Sherman County
Huskies, 15-1, on Thursday,
March 21, in a game called after
five innings because of the 10-run
rule. The Mustangs (3-0) had 10
base runners by either walks or
being hit by pitches, and had six
hits for their 15 runs.
Stefan Matheny got the Mus­
tangs going early by leading off
with a double; Kelly Paullus
walked and both runners moved
up on a passed ball. Michael
McCabe had an rbi groundout and
Billy Gates had a sacrifice fly to
make it 2-0 after one.
In the second. Donald Adams
walked; Brian Gutierrez and Luke
Murray each got hit by a pitch to
load the bases; Matheny hit a sac­
rifice fly and Paullus got an rbi as
the Mustangs made it 4-0 after
two without the benefit of a hit.
The M ustangs broke the
game open in the third, scoring 10
runs as Gates reached by getting
hit by a pitch and went to third on
Brad A dam s' double. Travis
Bellamy hit a sacrifice fly to score
Gates; Donald Adams had an rbi
single; Gutierrez walked and
Mustangs sweep Wolverines

over the centerfield fence.
Paullus walked and McCabe
reached on an error to set up
Gates' three-run homerun to left
center. Brad Adams and Bellamy
walked, moved up on a passed ball
and both scored on Donald
Adams’ single to make it 14-0.
The Huskies scored their lone
run in the top of the fourth, but
the Mustangs matched it as Kiel
Naims was hit by a pitch, moved
to third on an error and scored as
Paullus grounded out.
Matheny went two for three
with a double, a homerun and four
rbi, plus went three innings on the
mound, striking out six and allow­
ing three hits. Donald Adams went
two for two with three rbi and
pitched the final two innings, al­
lowing two hits with three
strikeouts. Gates ended up one for
one with a homerun and four rbi.
Brad Adams went one for one
with a double and Paullus picked
up two rbi.

Mustangs pound Pioneers to open season

The Heppner M ustangs
opened their 2002 baseball sea­
son by pounding out a 15-3 five-
inning win over the Mac-Hi Pio­
neers in Milton-Freewater on Fri­
day, March 15.
The Mustangs got on board
early as Stefan Matheny led off
with a double, Michael McCabe
walked, Billy Gates had an rbi sin­
gle and McCabe and Gates
scored on an error.
In the second. Josh Winters
reached third on a throwing er­
ror, Luke M urray doubled,
Matheny had an rbi single, Kelly
Paullus was hit by a pitch,
Matheny scored on a McCabe
single. Brad Adams reached on
an error, and Gates hit a sacrifice
fly to score Paullus and make it
8 - 0 ..
The Pioneers came back
with three runs in the bottom of
the second, but the Mustangs
scored two more in the top of the
third as Winters singled and moved
to second on a Murray bunt and
then scored on a Matheny single.

The Mustangs put the game
away in the fourth with a two-out
rally. Travis Bellamy singled,
Brian Gutierrez singled; Winters
was hit by a pitch to load the

passed ball, and Matheny reached
on an error. Paullus then hit a
bases-clearing double to make it
15-3.
Conor Kilkenny picked up the
win on the mound, striking out
nine, allowing no walks, scattered
five hits and gave up two earned
runs. Gates pitched a perfect fifth,
striking out two in relief.
Matheny went three for four,
scored four runs and had two rbi.
Paullus went two for three with
four rbi. Murray went one for one
with an rbi double and Winters
scored three runs.

The Bakery Boys 4-H Club
We Could All Stand
A Little Improvement

The Bakery Boys held their
first 4-H cooking club meeting of
the year on Friday, March 22.
Those present included Alex
C arlson, Eric Jepsen, Drew
Johnson, Matt and Bryan Holland
and their leader, Nancy Jepsen,
and youth leader, Amy Jepsen.
First, members had to decide
on a club name. They picked The
Bakery Boys. O ther close
choices were Doughboys, and
The Snackers. Next members
discussed what they wanted to
leam in the cooking group, got
started on record books and
talked about recipe collections.
Then they went to the kitchen and
everyone helped make Chex
Muddy Buddies and root beer
floats.
The club's next meeting is
tentatively set for Friday, April 19.
Club members are going to takes
turns being the news reporter
each meeting.

The Heppner Mustangs’ var­
sity baseball team moved to 5-0
on the year by sweeping the Alsea
Wolverines, 18-1 and 12-2, on
Saturday, March 23, in Dufur.
Both games ended after five in­
nings due to the 10-run rule. The
Mustangs’ next action will be at
Colfax, WA, for a doubleheader
on Saturday, March 30, beginning
at 11 a.m. They will then host
Mac-Hi on Tuesday, April 2, at 4
p.m.
The Mustangs spotted the
Wolverines an unearned run in the
top of the first, but they came
back to tie as Stefan Matheny led
off with a single and came around
to score on an error.
The Mustangs then took ad­
vantage of walks, hit batters and
timely hits to score 12 runs in the
bottom of the second to essentially
put the game away. Travis
Bellamy led off with a single,
Donald Adams walked and Josh
Winters singled to load the bases.
Then Matheny and Kelly Paullus
each forced in a run by walking,
Michael McCabe had a sacrifice
fly and Billy Gates drove in two
more with a double. Brad Adams
reached on an error; Bellamy
walked to load the bases again and
Donald Adams and Winters each
forced in runs by getting hit by
pitches. A run scored as Luke
Murray reached on an error and
Matheny forced in another run by
walking. Paullus got an rbi on a
fielder’s choice and McCabe had
another sacrifice fly to make it
13-1.
Brad Adams led off the third
with a double, Winters walked;
Donald Adams reached on an er­
ror and Murray had an rbi single
and two more runs scored on er­
rors to make it 16-1.
The Mustangs added two
more in the fourth when Bellamy
reached on a fielder’s choice.
Donald Adams was hit by a pitch;
Josh Gutierrez had an rbi single,
and Adams scored as Nick
Christman reached on an error.
Winters picked up the win on
the mound by going three innings
and allowing just one hit and no
walks while striking out two, with
relief help from Brad Adams, who
gave up two hits and no walks in
two innings.
Adams went two for four with
a double, Bellamy and Donald
Adams each scored four runs,
and Matheny, Paullus, McCabe,
Gates and Murray each had two
rbi’s.
Alsea again took an early lead
in the second game, getting a solo
homerun in the first inning, but the
Mustangs came back in the bot­
tom half as Matheny and Paullus
walked and came around to score
on singles by McCabe and Donald
Adams.
The Mustangs added five
more in the second as Brian
Gutierrez doubled, Matheny sin­
gled, Paullus had an rbi single,
McCabe singled, Gates drove in
two with a single, Bellamy walked,
and Donald Adams had an rbi tri­
ple.
In the third, the Mustangs
added four more with the big hit
coming from Brad Adams with a
bases-loaded triple.
The M ustangs ended the
game in the fifth as McCabe
walked. Gates was hit by a pitch,
Jode Coil walked and Bellamy
walked to make it 12-2.
McCabe went four innings to
pick up the win, striking out nine,
allowing two hits and no walks.
Gates pitched the fifth, getting
two strikeouts.

two doubles.

Time to remove studded tires
A sure sign of springtime is
the approach o f O regon’s
deadline to remove studded tires
from motor vehicles by Monday,
April 1.
Drivers with studded tires on
their vehicles after April 1 can be
charged with a class “C” traffic
violation, which carries a
maximum $ 150 fine.
An estimated $11 million is
spent each year repairing studded
tire damage on city streets, county
roads and state highways,
according to Doug Tindall, ODOT
maintenance engineer.
