The first St. Paddy’s Cruz-In
was held March 17,2001. The car
shows first event included 37 cars
and pickups from the Columbia
Basin and Portland area. Put
together with three weeks head
start, it was a success that
encouraged the club to go forward
as an added event of their already
successful
St.
P atrick’s
Celebration.
The 2001 show’s winners and
categories were: Peoples Choice
Award going to Joe Roberts of
Aloha with his 1949 Ford Tudor;
Leprechaun’s Choice was Bud
Englert of Umatilla and his 1935
Chevrolet four door sedan; Tom
W olff o f Heppner won the
Antique category with his 1948
Willy Jeep; Randy Henderson of
Hermiston took the Classic Award
with his 1970 Dodge Challenger;
and Charles Reiben of Hermiston
won with his 1947 Chevrolet pick
up. All entries were awarded the
2001 St. Paddy’s Dash Plaques.
It was a great addition to the
already very successful St.
Patrick’s Celebration and has
promise of being a major part of
our annual event.
As of March 1, 2002, the St.
Paddy’s Cruz-In 2002 has
expanded to 27 award categories,
raffles, an event cap and shirt
sales. Pre-registration is running
ahead of last year’s event and the
following committee members are
looking forward to a great show:
Archie and Diane Ball, John
Flaherty, Hobie Hansen. Frank
and Cara Osmin, Dick and Lynnea
Sargent, Cal Sherman, Meredith
W alters and Gary Watkins.
Student members are Lindsey
Ward (2001), Paula Spicerkuhn
and Ashley Ward.
The Cruz-In brings to

Come one, come all! Take a
break from all that spiffing up of
your businesses and yards and
come on out for the Great Green
Parade. You never know what
you’ll see—the world’s tallest
leprechaun, leprechauns with very
big heads, cleaned-up old cars,
very, very small cars, an Irish
racing green car with almost half
a million miles on it (okay, well,
320,000 miles), clowns, marching
bands, as well as emergency
vehicles not going to emergencies.
This year’s parade honorees
are John Doherty and the Irish
Singers. Craig Strobel is the chair
and his wife, Monika Hunter, is
announcing again this year.
Show up an hour early before
the parade and see the Round-Up
City doggers perform on the City
Center Shamrock at noon. Also,
you can watch bartenders spill
their beverages in the street in the
annual Bartender's Race. So
bring your lawn chairs, your
houseguests and kids and enjoy a
true blue, oops. I mean a true
green spirit (hopefully on a true
and all other Irish culture in the
greater Heppner area.
