February 13, 2002 - FIVE Mustangs take down Tigers 59-46 Mustang JV boys rebound for split M ustang girls fall to Tigerscots By Rick Paullus By Rick Paullus I he sixth-ranked Heppner Mustang boys led from start to tinish as they downed the visiting Stanfield Tigers, 59-46, on Satur­ day, Feb 9. The win kept the Mustangs in First place in the Co­ lumbia Basin Conference with a one-game lead over the Umatilla Vikings at 11 and one, with their overall record going to 18 and two. The Mustangs will play their final home game on Friday, Feb. 15, against the Wahtonka Eagles. The Mustangs got going ear­ ly as Michael McCabe hit a run­ ning jumper, David Norton hit a long jumper and Stefan Matheny hit a three-pointer to make it 7-2. Brad Adams hit two free throws and Norton hit a short jumper off a drive, but the Tigers hit a three- pointer to get within 11-8. The Mustangs closed the First with a flourish though, as McCabe hit a short jumper, Matheny complet­ ed a three-point play and Norton scored off a pass from Josh Win­ ters to make it 18-8. Norton started the second by converting a three-point play off a steal and Matheny hit a long jumper, but the Tigers scored sev­ en straight points to make it 23- 15. Matheny scored off a drive and reverse lay-in, but the Tigers scored Five more to make it 25- 20. Norton hit two short jumpers o ff p asses from A dam s and Matheny hit a running jum per to make it 31-22. Matheny hit one o f two free throws and McCabe hit a running jumper to end the half with the Mustangs leading 34-24. M atheny scored o f f a baseline drive and McCabe hit a lay-in on an inbounds play from Brian Rust to make it 38-27. Af­ ter a three-pointer by the Tigers, Norton hit a long jumper on the baseline, but the Tigers came back with Five straight points to get within 40-35. Rust hit a three- pointer but the Tigers scored to end the third to trail 43-27 going into the fourth. Norton and McCabe each hit two free throws to open the fourth and, after a Tiger free throw, the Mustangs put the game away as Matheny hit a three-pointer from the comer and Kevin Drake hit a long three-pointer and two free throws to make it 55-38. Drake hit two more free throw s and Winters hit two. The Tigers hit two late three-pointers to make the Final 59-46. Matheny led the Mustangs with 18 points, Five rebounds and two steals. Norton hit eight o f 17 shots for 17 points, had seven re­ bounds, Five of them offensive, and three steals. McCabe hit four o f seven shots for 10 points and grabbed Five rebounds. Adams had 11 rebounds. Five offensive, and had two assists. Rust had two steals. The M ustangs had another good game from the line, hitting 15 o f 21 free throws. M ustangs jum p on T igerscots early for w in throws, the Tigerscots answered, By Rick Paullus The sixth-ranked Heppner Mustang boys' varsity held a 30- 6 advantage early in the second quarter and carried it to a 69-47 win over the Weston-McEwen Tigerscots on Friday, Feb. 8, in Athena. The win kept the Mus­ tangs in First place in the Colum­ bia Basin Conference with a 10 and 1 record and improved their overall record to 17 and two. The Mustangs scored early and often in the First as Michael McCabe hit a long jum per and Stefan M atheny hit a baseline jumper. After a three-point play by the Tigerscots, McCabe hit two free throws and Matheny scored off a drive and hit a long jum per . to make it 10-3. Matheny hit two three-pointers and David Norton hit a baseline jum per for an 18-4 lead. Matheny hit a three-pointer from about 35 feet at the buzzer for a 21 -6 lead after one. Matheny hit six o f six shots in the First for 15 points. Kevin Drake opened the sec­ ond by making two free throws and h ittin g a th re e -p o in te r. Matheny hit a running jumper and McCabe made two free throws to make it 30-6 early in the sec­ ond. The Tigerscots outscored the Mustangs, 14-2, before Matheny hit a three-pointer and Norton hit a short jum per to make it 37-20. The T igerscots w o u ld n 't quit though, scoring the last seven points o f the second to get within 37-26 at halftime. The Tigerscots scored the First four points of the third be­ fore Brian Rust and Brad Adams each made a free throw. A three- point play by the Tigerscots made it 39-33. Matheny hit two free then Rust hit two three-pointers to make it 47-35. Matheny scored off a fast break to end the third with the Mustangs leading 49-37. McCabe scored off a drive then converted a three-point play to make it 54-38. McCabe then made two o f three free throws. Rust, one of two, and Norton, two o f two, to extend the lead to 59- 39. McCabe scored on a rebound. Josh Winters hit a three-pointer and Sam VanLiew hit a jumper to make it 66-41. Winters made a free throw and Norton made two to close out the scoring to make the Final 69-47. Matheny hit nine o f 13 shots, eight for eight in the First half, to Finish with 25 points and had sev­ en rebounds. McCabe hit four of eight shots and seven of eight free throw s for 15 points, four re­ bounds and three steals. Norton had nine points and Five rebounds. Rust had eight points.
